Is the U.S. Headed Towards Tyranny? Timothy Snyder Discusses | Amanpour and Company

President Trump has just announced the sentence commutation of former Illinois Governor Rob Blagojevich, a move that arrives just days after the DOJ overruled a harsher prison sentence for Roger Stone. Given the increased White House involvement in judicial matters, Yale University's Timothy Snyder, a historian and author who has devoted much of his career to understanding the rise of tyranny in different parts of the world, sits down with Ana Cabrera to discuss his concerns about a worrying trend taking root in the U.S.
Originally aired on February 18, 2020.

Timothy Snyder is to some degree the go-to guy on how democracies perish. Certainly every adult person SHOULD listen. Sadly few will. 16 months after he gave this interview on PBS, I actually had to struggle to recall the first Trump impeachment and its attendant outrages. The pandemic may have re-focussed our attention elsewhere in the intervening months, but still, the utter failure of Constitutional mechanisms to deal with a decidedly extra-Constitutional incipient tyrant is by now well into the background of our national rear-view -- and not by accident. More lately, we're being told a violent insurrection at the very seat of government never happened and that a man who lost the popular vote by seven-plus million and the electoral vote by better than a hundred is still the "lawful" president. We should all be very much aware that neither Hitler nor the Nazi Party ever won a popular election in Germany.

No it's not -- he doesn't know what he's talking about. He said Roberts "gave way" because he was supposed to "preside". Then he goes on to say what a judge usually does, which is to conform the process by the rules of procedure, but that is where the Federal Rules of Procedure apply. This is the Senate, maybe he should have read that part of the Constitution. The Senate sets its rules, and that includes the rules that apply to trials on impeachment charges. Roberts did that -- this guy is a nut really. It shows Yale has someone who has no expertise in law, and obviously does not have a law degree.

Wow! I found this one "by accident," and embodiment of Mr. Snyder's wise words are becoming even more evident today. (June 7) I'm heartened by his statement that we still have a chance - and he basically gave us a direction - It's good to start with resistance to call attention. But then we must know what we are FOR and vibrantly present those values as an alternative. Also he gave us a very specific goal: to get social media platforms ("without them this -rise of authoritarianism- would not be possible.") to accept responsibility, like other communication media has done in the past. "I believe in freedom of speech, but not for digital beings that don't have souls." So I need to find out what to do next!

@Nikki E. Your comment is very interesting, you put in eloquent words what the issue with 'full cancel culture' is. Yes, we need to stop blindly adulating famous people as though they were perfect. They need to be presented in their historical context in both ways, the good and the bad. I think it is the lack of honor and respect that is still present to this day of the people like slaves and Natives in their everyday lives, in the history books children read, in the lack of statues representing minorities (including women in history) that makes it problematic the most. If they felt recognized, heard and that there had been real reparation towards them, we could start healing. I think the Germans have done rather well with rememberance plates all over that speak of the Jewish lives lost. Well explained in Micheal Moore's movie Where to Invade next.

@@lindadunman9095 It was not rigged in 2016. Who said that? Herr Drumph? The creature won in 2016 because the Democratic Party took people for granted. The Republicans don't ever give a fart about "the little folk", and clearly neither do the Democrats. They lost states they won in 2008 and 2012, and that's why we are here in this abyss now. If what you call "rigged" is the rules laid down in the Constitution, a popular vote and electoral college; then you are saying you think the Constitution is a way to rig elections? The rich and powerful did not trust the masses to make decisions that would be advantageous then, and they still don't.

I watched this & left a comment 4 months ago, but after re-watching i want to add something. What he speaks about at the end is very important. Playing to the fears of the masses has always been the easiest way to convert them to your side & keep them there. Keeping them focused on what they don't want stops them from thinking about what they need & want. Sadly, the GOP has embraced this practice & almost made it their only strategy. Heaven forbid they try defining issues of concern, working out solutions, finding out how to implement those solutions as effectively as possible & then presenting all that information to the people to show they are able & willing to serve the needs of the people. That would expose their intentions & actions as self-serving so they have reduced the political system to mudslinging & fearmongering.
