Fascism takes a minute to propagate and he's been propagating with his base for quite awhile, long before the election. And now he's using our money to pay for it and the Presidential pulpit to spew the devisiveness. We have systemic problems in this country and a virus that threatens to kill us all along with a possible economic collapse. He's not mentally stable enough to handle it, that's obvious. After all his own father died from Alzheimers . Germany couldn't get close enough to Hitler to check his mental stability either. The GOP controlled Senate is going down with him come November. Of course I have, because I pay attention. It's clear from your question that your lens is skewed, or you are not paying attention. The terror you should be worried about are citizens being dragged into unmarked cars by anonymous police forces. This is what you call America? Would allowing those police forces to operate with no check make America great again, circa 1840? I'm no snowflake, so if you push back against this in support of unbridled authoritarianism let me apprise you of the fact that these Portland protests are in a two-block area, and consist mostly of graffiti and profanity. Conservative press - the actual fake news - loves to blow this up for their corporate lobbyists. there's no compromising with tyranny of this kind. There's only resistance until a fair, just, equitable, and non-racist social contract is firmly in place. From Newt to the tea party to the treasonist himself, it is the lovers and enablers of authority who will be last to recognize themselves as their victims.

Our governantes are praying on people’s anger, insecurities, ignorance and prejudice for their personal gain and exclusively for power. All the Democratic development we had, even frail as is was, it’s gone now. I never thought I would see history repeat itself. I never thought humanity would give this turn back into the darkest times in history. It’s sad....

Same. I’m from the United States and I’m scared too. I see more people spewing out homophobic and racist rhetoric everyday. I have friends who are part of the LGBT and they are being targeted left and right. Not only by our government, but also our fellow citizens. We are becoming more and more divided as a country every year. Liberalism and more left leaning ideologies are seen as “far left” by the right wing, even though they aren’t. We are becoming more intolerant and it’s very telling.

It certainly did, yet I still felt subhuman when being treated by at least one of their officers. I don't want to know what some non-white tourists have to go through. @@jusone9802 But that's not true to the extent you think. As an outsider I can tell you Hillary was a great choice. The narrative "both are horrible" is a purely Republican narrative, well mostly. It was also fed by some sore Sanders supporters. * The mail issue was a non-starter. Yes, it's a stupid thing to do. But it's stupid. Let alone the Trump admin does it much worse ever since getting into office. * The amount of experience in relevant (!) public office (i.e. on a federal level) was crushing, especially compared to Trump, but also compared to any of the other roughly 9374293742 Republican candidates. * Again, speaking as a foreigner, she is extremely well-known and it would have ensured a very good standing in foreign countries who knew who they'd be dealing with. It turns out that being reliable (cf. withdrawal of support for the Syrian Kurds, one of the worst backstabbings in modern history) is incredibly important for your political and economic standing in the world. * Speaking as a foreigner: I can say that most people in foreign countries quickly realised Trump is a phony. I mean the fact that he went bankrupt over a casino (ok, technically he didn't, the casino did), tells you pretty much everything you need to know. The mocking of a disabled journalist and the pussy tape opened pretty much anyone's eyes. * Meanwhile you have a Hillary Clinton who Republicans have been trying to pin scandals and other stuff on since her Arkansas days and they didn't succeed. And yes, your electoral university is a farce. Get rid of it, but it's by far not your only problem: * First past the post and single member districts * Citizens United. * The judiciary system is quite horrible on all levels. Electing judges and DAs, politicians appointing judges by party lines. "But muh control of the judiciary". Well, tough luck, most voters have no clue about laws anyway. And let's not talk about the hellhole that jury trials are. * Possibly also primaries... (in the current setting often encouraging the most radical candidates, especially on the Republican side) * Thinking there has to be a contrary position to literally anything.

He never referred to himself in his books as anything but a socialist. The left dominated universities have glossed over this to put the blame on the alt right. There was a shooting in America about 6-12 months ago, of some HISPANICS by a white gunman. The media immediately began to run, White supremacist alt right headlines, until the police found journals at the shooters house. He wrote about his belief in socialism and his intention to vote for Elizabeth Warren in the 2020 election. He wrote that he hated Pres Trump and couldn’t wait for America to become a socialist country. He was a Democrat but hated immigration, and especially Hispanics. He was a Nationalist like Hitler. Surprise, a White supremacist, left wing Nationalist. A White Supremacist Democrat. Something the Democrats and their fake media would have you believe can’t exist. If you ask me most of the violence and death over the last century has come from leftist, communistic, ( globalist) regimes.

Professor Stanley lays it out very well. When I was comparing government systems in university, many years ago, I struggled to find the USA a complete democracy. Besides the gerrymandering, electoral college etc, the biggest problem is the two party system. Combined with a 'winner takes all' principle in elections, this means there's no need to compromise. No need to listen to the opposition. And that means not all people's interests are being considered when policies are made. I would wish for the US to change to a multi-party system, with coalition governments. Might take a lot of getting used to, but it would be such an improvement.

I have never lost my love for the discipline, and it has a lot to offer in contemporary ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of language. But unfortunately for many decades, more than a century really, it has become too professionalized and technical. That is why I'm very happy to see young philosophers like Stanley bringing it's wisdom back to a wider audience of people. Ours is a society in both moral and intellectual meltdown. It is critical that more people start taking their principles and actions more seriously, applying good critical thought to the world around them, and gaining a better understanding of issues such as fascism in contemporary society. It seems even many supposedly educated people fail at this miserably. Jason Stanley is reminding us in a polite way that we had better get our act together quickly, or else ...

And in order to consolidate more power for this oligarchy is this not a natural progression towards fascism? And was this not done before Trump? Is the GOP solely to blame for this? What have democrats done to prevent this? How does a court decide that corporations are like people and allow all this money into the political system and make bribery legal? Bravo Jason Stanley! First real conversation about this I've heard in the mainstream press. Well done-thank you.

Denis Daly, we are not taught to think. We are taught to regurgitate ANYTHING we are fed.

In Portland, OR & Kenosha, WI recently we're seeing agent provocateurs looks like to me. In Portland, OR someone deliberately went after this popular 'good old - boy's for execution, they knew who they're aiming for. And in Kenosha, a 17 yr. old must have been chosen to enter and leave theater across state lines in order to be eventually found 'innocent' killing two people with his AR-15 Bushmaster assault rifle. A church group is all ready raising money for his defense, he's in a 'Juvy' lock-up after having committed federal crimes. If that was a black person with an AR-15 on the streets of Kenosha he would've been killed I'm sure, unless some Black Panthers were there. Trump is making America great again picking up on Eisenhower's Operation Dixie where Nixon, and Reagan used its refined 'Southern Strategy' methods. Bush I too in '88.

That's what happens in a country in which history lessons are often geared toward promoting things like 'American exceptionalism' or 'Manifest Destiny'. It would be worth it for students to learn how democracies have died in the past so that they may preserve their own.

Are you absolutely certain that is what is being taught in history lessons today? I don't know, I am just asking, but I have my suspicions.
