I have a total inferiority complex about how easily and breezily you make homemade flour tortillas every damn time. PROPS!

I make these (similar) a LOT and use flour tortillas for my family and corn for me (wheat allergy). We think they are amazing and even my son prefers them over traditional most of the time. Definitely NOT a fad in my house! I also us a griddle and lots of butter. Seasoning is my preferred blend of salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder. And I top with caramelized onion and sautéed mushrooms instead of lettuce and tomato. You really need to try them that way. So much flavor! You also have to get the "taco" and "burger" ideas out of your head. This is not like either.

Do it, but unless they cook themselves, and understand how much effort you went to... don't expect them to be overly impressed. Sorry, not trying to deter you... it's VERY MUCH worth it. But do it for YOURSELF, to prove you've got the chops. And to enjoy the fruit of your labor. I've found the people I cook over the years (large in law family of mostly non cooks) just don't "get it" 99% of the time. They'll scarf it, say it's good... but not grasp that you spent entire days or longer to make that one meal. How someone can't appreciate homemade rolls or tortillas over the packaged ones, I've no idea... maybe I just haven't been lucky that way.

I've done them a few times, its not a go to meal for me but its good. I like to fry up some bacon for a bacon cheeseburger version, smash the burger to the side and then flip it into the bacon grease. The tortilla fries up in the fat and it becomes pretty amazing. And I pretty much always have tortillas in my house, I don't always have buns. And a breakfast version with breakfast sausage or chorizo and a fried egg is pretty awesome as well. I don't think its good enough to do it all from scratch, but its good enough when you have it all on hand and knock it out in 5 minutes.

Cool video, i kind of wonder with pressing the burger into the tortilla if it might be better to go a little leaner with the burger grind. Seems like that tortilla is going to soak up any most of the juices that come off the burger during cooking, including all the fat that normally stays on the griddle.

I have been very skeptical of these things, but bought the stuff to make them tonight (using fresh HEB tortillas for ease). I got home, put everything away, & saw this video. Weird timing. Anyway, it was nice to hear your thoughts on it. Going to see what we think... I imagine it'll be similar to your " gimmicky" assessment. Still, fun to do one time, just because. I think these would make an adult way less lame at a 'tween sleepover party. Different than the usual Pizza situation.😅

I think the texture isn't working for you because of the crust being on one side of the tortilla and one side of the burger, but if it's just how it's made you can't change it, otherwise get a crust on both separately.

This is no different than a pita burger that you find in some greek style (and probably many other style) restaurants, except here the tortilla is more flat while the pita has more of a pillowy puff.
