I don't even think that gremlin hole on Twitter is the community anymore. It's only lately occurred to me that there is a gigantic disconnect between the people online and the people who actually pay the venuee fees and are physically there. The social media crowd feels so empowered by anonymity and the standard "cringe bad" mentality that they can turn a goofy popoff that was completely endorsed by a energetic crowd for a great set into Hbox needing to be banned or even executed(?!). I don't want to play armchair psychologist but all of fish's tweets regarding the situation were isolated hate talk that obviously would catch attention and made her come off as feeling weirdly empowered by it especially after Juan apologized to her. Never felt more disconnected to whatever was going on that platform after i just watched the whole venue firing up Hbox. In general there is complainer culture at irl tourneys but the recent vibe at tournaments i've been to has been pretty chill with people just keeping to themselves and their friends. Social media and especially Twitter just feed on people discussing a topic, systematically encouraging hateful discourse because that always makes the most numbers. I personally always saw the reliance on Twitter as the community's biggest issue, especially in situations where random individuals shouldn't have any influence on certain topics like the 2020 allegation summer that got a bunch of people just sorted out without a fair shot no matter ig they were guilty or not or the Panda situation as you've definetely experienced yourself. I just don't think that a whole community relying on a toxic loop is or ever was healthy for anyone besides individuals who love causing problems and insulting others over little to nothing.

i agree with you on the fact that people don't know how to read WR. Normally a less played character has more win rate, because the only people that play the character are mains. When a character is extremely popular, people bring down its win rate. So to know fully well how good or bad a character is, a combination of Pick Rate and Win Rate is extremely necessary. There are so many cases, and Win rates alone are not going to define precise data, but are interesting to look at.

He probably could've made a hefty sum if he chose to follow those... Instead, he chose something he loves. This is coming from a Floridian doc kid too that hated him when I saw it. I feel like it did Hbox a disservice. The way they framed him in relation to Mang0 is odd when I think back about it.

On your League example, there are also champs that are so mechanically attuned to professional play that they have to destroy them numerically, such that they have like 44% winrate, but are still winning pro games like crazy. These winrates mean NOTHING for competitive viability.

When the pick rates are low the people using the character regularly are holding up that win rate. people also don’t know how to fight against the character because they don’t get much exposure. Combine those aspects with almost zero labing from players on how to combat gimics and you got a very skewed win rate that tells you nothing.

Irresponsible, sure. Going as far as saying he endangered the crowd is definitely a stretch though. If a guy as big as hbox was trying to break the chair, it would've broke, and the stage was definitely big enough that it wouldn't have hurt anyone. If the venue or organisors were upset, sure. But that's between them, not the audience. Should definitely be reprimanded for it though, imo. He shouldn't be shit talking on twitter, but it's pretty clear to me at least that it had nothing to do with the fact that the target was a woman. He's content creator and he markets himself for a general audience. It's not like he doesn't have a track record, he probably would've never posted it in the first place if he realized it could've been taken in a sexual way. The idea that this is good attention for the community is dumb, though. The rest of the VGC already looks down on smash enough, it just looks childish to go so far.

the problem with Hbox is that he's a dweeb. to outsiders he's The Guy Who Just Loves Yelling And Throwing Chairs(TM). at this point it his literal gimmick, as evidenced by him having to redo the chair throw at GOML, presumably to get a better camera shot. in game he is The Best Most Annoying Character (to many). he'll get hate for his play, for his character, for his being. these two qualities make for a combo that is very easy for people to dislike in one form or another, and for that guy to bite back with a (really widely used to the point it's pretty generic/gender neutral) insult just ends up looking immensely Not Cool (either morally or in the sense of being cringe). and while he seems fine with making these things his brand (again, he is notoriously content pilled), it doesn't make him look any less like a dweeb in the eyes of many
