Is it possible to get a good quality 4K HDR TV for under $400? Today we are looking at the TCL 49S425 49" 4K HDR10 TV, which is one of the best selling budget 4K HDR TV's on Amazon.

So, is the TCL 4-Series actually good? I too was skeptical of it's quality and performance given it's rock bottom pricing on Amazon and across various online resellers, so I went into this purchase expecting to be very underwhelmed.
The TCL 4-Series lineup offers a 4K HDR10 panel, simulated 120hz motion smoothing, smart features thanks to the embedded Roku OS, and just enough connectivity on it's IO to keep the average person satisfied.
Everything here works well. The HDR features make colors come to life, while the panel used does a very good job limited noticeable light bleed and/or bloom. The Roku TV OS provides you with an plethora of entertainment options from top brands and allows this TV to be fully features while operating as a standalone device.
So, is the TCL 4-Series worth it? Absolutely! I am continuously impressed by this panel and what it has to offer given it's rock bottom price point, and I am looking forward to seeing what TCL has coming in the future.

True HDR is 1000 to 3000 nits I believe, depending on the type of HDR. There have been newer HDR scales as low as 300 nits since it's still noticable in the colors and contrast compared to no HDR at all.

Series 6 offers a couple of additions such as better build quality, full array backlighting, faster response times, and Dolby Vision support. The Series 4 is a backlit LCD/VA based 4K HDR10 panel with noticable corners cut on its general appearance.

For gaming it's fairly fast; however, it's not very bright and you won't really get the full effect of HDR and Ray Tracing compared to a more capable TV with a more appropriate peak brightness. On the flip side, it's an great option for its price point for sure!

The 43” 4 series can be had from retailers for well under $250 out the door in the US. It’s a pretty damn good deal. I haven’t had any issues with mine. I got mine for my bedroom. I don’t really care if it craps out at that price. If I get two or three year of use out of it I’ll be happy. It’s light enough and cheap enough that sometimes I put in the backseat of my car and take it to my GF house without really worrying about it. Yes the packing take thing pissed me off too.

These are like the 1rst gen moto-g when it came out. At the time for a budget piece of tech, You really couldn't do much better. We went from 2 old crt t.v.'s within the same month to 2 tcl t.v.'s and were blown away. The 43" hdr/4k and 32 1080p. Never had flat screen before this. And it was the best way to break into a new technology for us. And if you aren't someone that has already been spoiled by much higher grade or expensive flat panels, you really won't be disappointed with this. Except maybe the speakers for the 43 and 32" t.v.'s. Getting a soundbar with these isn't a complete necessity but it will be one of the next purchases you'll want to make.

Thanks Akimbo! I think this TV is a great and ultra affordable start for next gen gaming. My only small concern is the lack of brightness in this panel to be able to leverage proper HDR in games. I think it's peak brightness is sub 250nits, and you typically don't see advantages of HDR until above 600nits+. Other than that, it will offer a solid 4K experience and it's nice and fast in game mode.

A point worth mentioning is that all TCL panels, as far as I'm aware, are VA (vertical alignment). This is good in that they are good at producing blacks, but suffer from loss of colour saturation if you're not sitting within about 20-25 degrees on either side. So, if you're planning on putting it in a room with seating off to the side, it will be very noticable to those sitting there. Also, in a different review of a TCL 4 series, the reviewer mentioned that these tvs aren't very good in bright rooms due to a backlight that isn't quite bright enough and a has problem with glare. Just to add, that I researched a bit more and there are conflicting reports about whether TCL may or may not have the glare and/or brightness problems that the other reviewer claimed. Any prospective buyer may wish to look into it further

Great points! I have 6 pot lights in my bedroom, with one being directly overtop the panel. At 100% brightness on the bedroom lights, do find the panel a little hard to see; however, my panel brightness is also set to 59. I usually dim the bedroom lights to atleast 50% for optimum viewing.

No one will probably read this, but what the heck...I bought the 49" 2017 model when it first came out. So, I've had mine for 4 years, now. This model has a good picture with pretty accurate colors, and decent contrast for an entry level tv (There is banding in some dark scenes, though). It isn't very bright, but it's bright enough. It also handles motion pretty well. However, the viewing angle is poor on this set. It washes out pretty quickly as you move to the side. Fortunately, mine is situated for only direct viewing. Unfortunately, since about a month ago a faint line has been running up my screen. I've read some reviews from other people who have had the same problem, and it seems there's nothing that can be done to remedy it. The good thing is that it is virtually unnoticeable in bright scenes, and barely noticeable in dark scenes. So, I can live with it. It can be annoying if you look for it, though. So, I try not to look for it.😉. All in all, this tv was worth the money. Hope this helps someone.

I used it daily without a soundbar and it wasn't an issue. I will say that as a bedroom tv it's never up too loud since we watch later at night with limited background noise, so I'm not sure exactly how well it would fair in a livingroom and main living space while competing with other daily ambient noises.

Thank you for the video 👍🏼. I just replaced my 6 yr old 60" vizio (kept turning off by itself) with a TCL 65" S421 model. It's my 1st 4k so I'm trying to get the best on a budget. $458 at Walmart for a 65"4k! It looks great. My firestick pictures actually looks better than the native roku in the TV for some reason 🤔. The firestick isn't even 4k, it's been ordered though. The 4k pictures on the roku are of course great so I cannot wait to see what the 4k firestick looks like . My concern is that this TV only has HDR not DOLBY VISION. Would it be worth it to return it and get one (hopefully for around the same price) with DOLBY VISION or is it not that big of deal to have to go through the headache of returning it? Thoughts from anyone would be greatly appreciated. 👍🏼

  • @qwazyd0gg

The Roku OS does has a slightly softer 4K signal compared to something viewed through the HDMI port. This is mostly due to the extra horse power of the chipset and additional settings only bring used via HDMI in. Dolby Vision is amazing and more natural compared to HDR10; however, the price difference between a Series 4 and Series 6 is quite large for just the addition of DV. I would probably just stay with what you have. If you wanted to check out the Hisense H9F, I have a review of that on my channel as well if you're looking to spend a bit more.

I just bought the 43" version and its the best tv I have ever had before this one I had the 32" 2019 version. but it had black stuff around the pannel you could see when watching bright videos showing white. I got this one because the 32" died it accidentally got hit slightly on the pannel and it ended up cracking. Your video was the reason I got the 43". Only gripe I have it it likes to over modulate when I have mt external DAC and speakers hooked up to it through the headphone jack. Imused to be able to keep the 32" at 93 but on the 43" I had to set it to 72 sometimes because of the over modulation when watching some videos on KZread. I could be wrong, but again I highly doubt that is a feature on this TV.

I've never used Sanyo or Hitachi personally and I would assume they are more of a budget off brand. I never see them at my local big box retail stores, but I always see them in weird places like grocery store electronics departments. I have both a TCL 4 Series and 2 Hisense panels (R6 and Q9/H9F). For the price the Hisense R6 has less DSE and a more attractive external appearance than the TCL, making it appear slightly more premium. OS, functionality, and remote are the same on both since they're both Roku based. I've had my TCL for a little over a year and my Hisense R6 for almost 2 years with no issues on either. My Hisense has probably a couple hundred hours more use on it compared to the TCL since it's a main living space TV and the TCL hasn't been powered on since out flood in September as the basement is still under reconstruction.

So the PS5 is "capable" of 4K/120hz; however, Sony has said they are targeting a high quality 4K/60 next gen experience and not sacrificing quality to achieve 120hz or 120fps. This is good news because 60Hz is faster than console players are use to, while providing a high quality visual return. This TV is not true 120hz, as it uses motion interpolation to simulate or smooth 60hz motion to look as of it is 120hz. You DO NOT want this for gaming is it severely increases input lag to well over 100ms. You'd need a true 120hz native panel TV with 48gbps HDMI 2.1 + an HDMI 2.1 cable capable of 48gbps (not included with PS5) to get 120fps on the like one game they have in their library so far.

Is this tv decent for gaming? I’ve been thinking about getting a new tv with 4K and hdr for my PS4 pro and is there any delay to the controller like how a really big tv would have.

  • @qwazyd0gg

It's ok. Input delay is fast enough for most games, but the TV just does not get bright enough to really see HDR in gaming or video content. The Series 6 TCL would be a better option, or the Hisense H8G.

the only thing that I recommend is TCL historically has problems with quality control in their panels so if you did a white screen test you might see dark spots. Since I deployed with the Army for a year TCL would not let me exchange it, when I returned from my deployment. When I finally discovered the dark spots which show up as two eyes in the middle left and the middle right of the screen. That being said for bedroom TV it's not bad. But I was really disappointed that they didn't back there TV considering I deployed. Make sure to do a screen uniformity test . KZread has several of these on hand.

If you are buying this for gaming, let me tell you it kills Sonys and Samsungs as well. Input lag and also panel responsiveness is really close to 10ms in game mode, while the hyped Sony's are around 70ms lagfest TVs for 1000 bucks. Also, huge plus here, the 4series version natively supports 1440p @60fps (along with 1080p and 4K of course), which was actually cut out from the 5 series already. So to all the console and PC gamers out there, the 4 series is a must buy, especially for the low price. Now if you are a high refresh rate gamer like me, of course the 120Hz native panel would be better, but that is around 2-3x price and not really competing with a decent gaming monitor. So my advice is get a Dell or Acer 144Hz gaming monitor at 27" size + get the 43" TCL S425 TV for games like racing games, adventure games where the 60Hz is enough. There are still a lot of games out there btw that are capped at 60fps anyways. I couldn't find a better gaming setup for me. Sure, if you have 1.500 USD to spend then just get a C9 or CX, those are really good, but a bit of an eye melting if you want to use them close on the desktop. (I ended up returning it.)

As far as splitting the screen, I don't believe the TV natively supports picture in picture, so you would have to play WoW in windowed mode while watching Netflix via a browser window.
