I’m a retired mortician and I have buried quite a few people who were shot by a 22LR. Bullets are nothing to play with and what idiot is going to stand toe to toe with you when you pull out your gun. Are they going to ask you, “Oh what caliber is that gun you got there before I rob you”. Don’t believe those people who say 22LR is not good for self defense. I seen for myself what it can do.

Shot placement is the key factor in a confrontation. Multiple shots in rapid order with limited recoil and blast make the . 22 LR a deadly combination.

As a LEO, I was shot twice, once in the face with a .25 auto, and .38 special and hit my vest. The .25 hurt like hell but hit my cheek and bounced off. I do not want to stand in front of any bullet, but if I had a choice, it would be a .25 or smaller

I definitely respect that. My late dad, also a former Marine ('67-'71), brought us up on 22s and taught us how to shoot them all well, and he was an expert shooter with the M-14. I carry the Ruger 3'' LCR in WMR or the Ruger 4.5'' SR22. Totally adequate for my general SD purposes.

I agree completely. The 22 isn't a combat gun or a duty gun. All I have to do to protect myself is break contact. I either need to get away or cause the other guy to get away. My LCR in 22 is handy, easy to shoot and adequate.

When I carry the 22, its in a bianchi black widwow holster. its too bulky for pocket imo. and that 556 looking shorty, I would be deaf and cant do anything else if I used it in a defense situation.

I'm glad to hear someone else say this, I'm an infantry veteran and while I do not carry a .22, your concept on breaking contact in a civilian situation is an important one. It's not my job to kill the other person, though I will . . . It's my job to get to safety. I am not a soldier anymore, I am a civilian.

That's the entire argument for the .22Lr in a nutshell.The guns job "job" (purpose) as a civilian is to "BREAK CONTACT". . A cop on duty HAS to walk down that dark alley and subdue or apprehend the suspect. A soldier Must seek out and engage the enemy. A civilian can just avoid most dark alleys or shady establishments.....Situations where the ducks lineup and the boxes are checked where I or any civilian canLEGALLY /JUSTIFIABLY use lethal force. are few and far between AND means you fucked up (and let your ego overrun your brain). . And you are more than likely going to be charged and go to court. (/prison?) @@rileylabski

My younger brother retired from law enforcement with 33 years of service. He explained to me one time that as long as a normal person is not participating in gang activity, not buying or selling drugs, not working as a prostitute, not hanging out in bars, not invading homes, and not generally acting like a tough guy jerk, the chances of experiencing vilolence was extremely low.. With that said a smart person still doesn't go the the bank ATM late at night or put themselves in a position to be walking around in the mall parking lot late in the evening.

I run my business out of storage lockers. I am there everyday. Five years ago I went to my locker later in the evening 9:30pm to get some merch. I got on the elevator something didn't seem right. There were expensive belongings strewn around the floor. The door opened and I looked out into a scene of horror and brutality that was undescribable. A man lay dead face down completely bled out. There was blood on the floor walls and ceiling. I backed back into the elevator and left. I was in shock. I had a Glock 43 in a holster. As I left the building which was big I unholstered the weapon and concealed it in my jacket pocket (which were deep and of course with my finger off the trigger). I had a ways to walk and after clearing the building and not confronting anyone I called the police reholstered my weapon. I was coherent enough and I trained allot with the weapon. I wasn't going to present it unless I identified a threat basically coming at me. The gentleman who was murdered unfortunately was someone I new. He was another business owner with a locker like me. He was unrecognizable. He had been stabbed in the head neck and back. It was a completely random crime. The killer was looking for a car because he had already killed someone and the police were after him he was on the run. He targeted my acquaintance and followed him into the storage. The killer was an unassuming caucasian guy in his early thirties looked like a college student. The victim who was murdered was someone I had discussed self defense with and he felt it was not necessary to own or carry a gun He was super nice guy and I respected his choice. We agreed to disagree. What I learned that day was maybe not for certain but maybe a gun could have saved his life. After that day I have carried every day and always. I think caliber is a personal choice. I don't usually carry anything less than a 38. I have carried .380 but in a higher round platform like my Ruger. 380 max. I think 9 is an excellent round. In my line of work I am limited since dealing with the general public. I always carry my Taurus 856ULCH. It does not print through what I wear. If I could carry my XDe in 45 everyday at work I would. 45 stops a fight. It stops the action of an aggressor in motion usually with 1 round especially at close range. I carry my XDe after work, especially when I go to the storage locker. THE ONE MISTAKE THIS GENTLEMAN MAKES IS DO NOT AND I MEAN DO NOT ASSUME YOU WILL NOT BE THE VICTIM OF VIOLENT CRIME. My friend who was murdered thought the same, quiet family guy, didn't go to bad places yadayada. He was slaughtered like an animal the brutality was incredible. To see what one human randomly, not knowing another person simply strangers, can do to another was astonishing. Definitely changed my life. We drift into uncertain times poverty , homelessness is increasing exponentially, millions of undocumented people are here and coming into America daily. This is serious and deliberate act of sedition against the citizens and is designed to create chaos because the people who run this country believe out of chaos comes order, ordo ab chao and they do not care about how you feel about it. Be strong and of good courage unfortunately the Republic ended. Benjamin Franklin stated "now you have a Republic if you can keep it" . We lost the challenge in the name of convenience and apathy.

I always carry a 22 LR revolver....never have ever needed it for self defense. And hope I never will ever need it...but it's extremely accurate..has no recoil...has 9 shots...and it's a firearm I've shot 100000 rounds threw at a minimum....I'm 100. % confident with it...and that's the main thing

I totally agree... .22 LR is perfectly fine for an average citizen. It is a weapon to get you out of a situation and flee.

What a refreshingly sane discussion of this topic. I live in a small town and see no compelling reason to carry, but if I lived where carrying seemed like a better idea my reasoning would be much the same as yours.

I've seen 22lr drop cattle over & over with 1 round. Stay safe this world is crazy

I said in the video, it is illegal to pull it out and not use it. so what people think when they see it is a moot point. Pulling out a defense gun in a situation where the enemy have time to consider ending the confrontation means you are delaying your deployment of your weapon, which will mean time is wasted, and time is all you have

Ca. Dept Corrections, 25 years, now retired. You couldn’t begin to imagine how many Board of Prison parole reviews for lifers that I sat in on where the convict killed his victims with a 22L R. Many said they didn’t want to kill the person but just wound them . Never under estimate the power of that cartridge. .22 mag is just that much more powerful. Deadly business, both of those rimfires……

Totally agree. There are too many Dirty Harry Rambo’s out in public that would never carry a firearm that’s less than 9mm. Regrettably, ammo cost limits their range time, which limits their shooting accuracy. There’s a lot more practice with a 22, and in an adrenalin filled situation you don’t want to be spraying a neighborhood or a crowd with heavy caliber ammo. You want to stop the threat and put shots on target. Much easier and safer with a 22 than with the big guns and a 22 will pretty much stop anyone. Good video.

​@@jimmio1622 : In that case, you'd need guaranteed CNS shots, a.k.a. headshots... which, for most people on a limited budget, is much easier get with the volume and rapidity of fire from a 22. Just have to use decent ammo for carry--Mini-Mags, Punch, or Aguila HV.

I successfully stopped a burglary, at my house, with a Ruger MKIII .22lr. No shots fired. In fact, I could have been holding a black water pistol and gotten the same results. Take care.

You are 100 percent correct. This obsession with large caliber and 16 rounds is wrong . In fact as a retired lawyer I would hate to be defending a client who was charged with manslaughter because he fired 16 rounds and some accidentally hit bystanders. WE are Not the police who have governmental immunity!! We only need to defend in very narrow circumstances. And in doing so we must act in a careful manner based on trained awareness. And situational training that gets you to think before you shoot . Even if you have seconds to do so training makes a proper response automatic. A jury looking at a Glock with 17 rounds is going to think you actually wanted confrontation and were a Walter Mitty cop want to be . Stand a 22 LR cartridge next to a 9 mm and see how a jury reacts. They will think you with the 22 we’re using minimum force to defend . ( actually more people are killed with 22 than any other caliber ) but we won’t go there . And training to shoot targets that are 75 feet away is insane when the testimony shows up in a court room ! 21 feet or less and one handed which makes a 22 LR or a 22 mag perfect . Always think of what you are doing will look to a judge or jury in the cold light of day years removed from the event . By the way I would never want a jury trial except in narrowly defined circumstances. All you have to do is get one person to put themselves in your shoes during that moment. Again my only disagreement with you is I think odds of being in mass shooter event is not zero . Maybe 40 years ago but not today .

I agree a 22 LR or 22 Mag will do the job if needed, I carry them when they suit the conditions. I don’t feel unarmed with them..And as you said you don’t hang out in areas where you would need more.. I won’t lie, I carry 9mm, 45 ACP, 357 mag, but it all comes down to where we are and what we’re doing.. good job on the video I’m betting you will piss a few people off with this video..

My friend was killed by a 22 in the early 80s when we got home from war. Five shots to the chest in a robbery after we got home from the Navy. Don't let anybody tell you you can't be murdered by one.

I totaly agree also. The purpose of having a handgun is to stop the threat. Once you pull out your handgun the oponent is not going to look to see what caliper it is and second, stopping the threat does not mean killing the person. Its just means you have stopped the threat by injuring, or having him run. Theses guys that say they would never carry a 22lr are the Marcho, ego driven people. Great video.!!!

I always have said! That Guns are just like the clothes that you wear for all the different ocasiones, the beach 🏝️ swimwear, a fancy party you wear nice clothing and most of all what ever shoes or flip flops 🩴 you wear, they should always be comfortable. That being said, your weapons should also be comfortable for you to shoot and conceal and handle well. Also, the higher the caliber, the higher the risk of over penetration and collateral damage that might ruin your day or life. I really enjoyed your video Sir.

I also like the idea of the .22lr in a revolver preferably,because of the rimfire not always firing.The two main attractions for me is the affordability of the ammo ,almost no recoil, and it is not going to burst your eardrums!

Good job. I have a Ruger LCR .22lr and wouldn't hesitate to carry it for the reasons you have discussed. I would carry with CCI 40 gr MM or CCI Velocitors. I agree if carrying a .22 keet to revolvers. I have a number of 9mm pistols, Ruger LCP .380, S&W model 65 3" .357. but I am comfortable with the .22lr LCR as well. When I go to gun club, one or twice a week, I will usually shoot 100-200 rounds of .22lr with revolvers or pistols before shooting centerfire handguns. Great cheap practice

Great video and full of common sense. I got a good laugh at your intro. I'm all about big caliber high capacity.......for hunting, combat, etc., However for self defense, my goal is to just break contact with whomever is trying to harm me. That's it. A top quality 22LR handgun with top quality ammo can handle 99.9% of self defense situations when out and about. For me, a Beretta 21A pocket pistol is perfect. Fits in my pocket and I ALWAYS have it with me. For nighttime home defense, I keep a 9mm double stack with a light on it on my night stand.

This was a great video on this topic and I hope you do more interesting videos. I get frequent failures in my 22lr auto and prefer the revolver for 22lr . The Federal Punch 22LR round is really good, it is all I want to use in my 22 now. No failures with that. But not always available.

I agree with you 100% and I own 3 22LR pistols and one 22mag pistol My EDC is a P17 in 22LR and I sometimes carry the 22mag gun. I can no longer handle the more powerful guns because of nerve damage in my hands and I'm 79 years old! I carried a Glock 19 as my duty weapon for many years but things change and we all have to make adjustments, as life goes on. My Life is good here in Sunny Florida and I shoot at my LGR every week! My wife wanted 22cal for conceal carry. The gun merchant told her "I don't recommend it. It's not effective. But I will sell it to you if YOU REALLY WANT IT" That scared my wife. My wife is 4'8" Asian woman. So I handed a 45 cal 1911 pistol. It looked ridiculous in her hands. "Honey, do you think you can pull this out of your purse?" She said Nope. OK, don't listen to this guy. If you pull out a 22 and shoot him in the nuts I guarantee it will take him out of his game and then you can run away. Later my wife asked me, "why do these guys say things like that if it is not true?" Because they are gun enthusiasts or ex-military and are Not thinking clearly about who you are and what's the purpose at hand. Besides, he's probably never been hit with a 22 bullet. I got shot with a BB gun that barley went into my skin and it was Extremely painful. Thanks for your clarity on this video.

I am 78 and can't control a larger caliber and my wife is also Asian (which doesn't matter) but both of us can shoot the .22 with no difficulties.

You remind me of the first rule of self defense “break the action of the attack”. Not war, not duty, not mass shooters. Personal attacks. 22lr is great for stopping the attack.

Yup, good enough for my lifestyle. I carry a S&W 43c loaded with Federal Punch. Small, very light weight and easy to carry in a pocket holster or leather belt holster. The right tool for the right job.

one aspect I like about the 22LR is the low level of explosion trauma.. YES a grenade activated between you and your enemy will destroy your enemy, but then also you along with it... People use Flash Bangs for a reason, and I think, although I never experienced it, that if I fired a 38 special or higher in the real world in self defense, the exposition may incapacitate my senses limiting my ability to further defend against the other bad guy who is in cahoots with the first one.. UGH

Thoroughly enjoyed your conversation. .22lr is just another tool in the chest. I gave my wife a NAA. 22lr mini revolver over 30 years ago. We've only had to pull it out twice to save ourselves from violent aggression. Both times the perps walked away. That little 5 shot revolver is my go to carry pistol for the beach. .22lr pistol and rifle combination with quality ammo is not only adequate but the preferred choice in civilian use. 😊😎🤠

Be careful these days, some states if you pull that gun, and not even aiming it at them, just in hand and aiming down so they see it or even if you pull your shirt up so they see it, YOU then become the bad guy.

Totally agree with a lot of what you say, people need to consider circumstances. You have to make the call to engage or not, if you live in a dangerous city, you might encounter multiple thugs and they may all outgun you. You may also not have to put someone down permanently.

I’ve carried a ruger lcp 2 22 lr for 3 years now. As i was looking for a carry piece after getting my permit i had bought the lcp for my wife so that she could practice her marksmanship on the cheap and maybe even carry it if it proved reliable and she became proficient with it. She had zero interest in it, she liked a glock 23 40 caliber she couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn with. So i drug the ol lcp out and started plinking with it. It was accurate, it fit in my pocket and was extremely comfortable to carry without changing my entire wardrobe, or open carrying, but it wasn’t reliable. It checked the other boxes so well tho it was worth my effort to make it reliable. A bit of research and a spring kit from galloway precision and it was reliable, accurate, and easily carried consealed. Shortly after I decided to start carrying it as im experimenting with different ammunition federal released the 22 punch. I got my hands on 500 of them and rested them out, they performed flawlessly in my pistol. I bought several bricks more and have carried it ever since. I clean it once a week, i cycle out the ammo i have sweated on throughout the day at a 6” gong in my back yard 40 yards off my porch. Between that and just plinking with it for fun i have put roughly 4000 rounds through my carry gun. Now all my friends give me grief having seen me shoot a 500 magnum and carrying a 22 pocket pistol. I think it is funny as they tell me about the superior ballistics of their 9 mm , 40’s, and 45’s in their trucks, or even their night stand at home by their bed as i have my humble 22 in my pocket then and there. People’s preconceptions are a powerful thing sometimes, i cant be mad at it for i am guilty of it to in some aspects of my life. But i have never felt underarmed with my proven lcp 22 in my pocket.

I have one of those KelTec P32s and I carry it as a backup almost every day (to a Glock 43). No one wants to get shot with anything, period. Hell, even spitballs at 300 fps can injure (they may take a little time to deploy). One of my future acquisitions is a Ruger LCP II in .22 LR, for all of the factors that you mentioned. Good video.

Totally agree. 22lr is great. Also inexpensive ammo comparatively to all other calibers so more likely to practice with it. Also a lot easier for anyone to shoot it. Get away if you can; stand your ground if you MUST.

Yes a .22LR is good enough for self defense, as with any caliber shot placement is critical. I inherited my grandfather's 9-shot .22 revolver with a 6" barrel and it's very accurate. Now outside my home I carry a 9mm or 380 and sometimes have a .22 pocket gun for backup.

Ditto. I inherited my grandfather's Hi Standard .22 revolver 9 shot. He was a farmer and used it to dispatch varmints and snakes. I also carry a 9 but my back up is , you guessed it , a .380. Don't carry the .22, it's just for plinking.

I use to carry a KelTec 32 acp pistol just like that in my pocket too. Great little gun. Mine was just like yours, the 1st generation where the slide is milled out of square stock. The gen 2 ones, the slides were milled out of hex bar stock. I shot that little gun so often that I bought LEE reloading dies so I could afford to shoot it. I couldn't find a bullet mold for 32ACP that was reasonably priced, so I bought a LEE .32 caliber rifle bullet mold and milled it down until it would cast the proper size & weight bullets.

Any caliber works with the right round placement. You don't have to kill, just get them to leave you alone.

From my perspective:.22lr revolver with shorter barrel is better solution than ACP and it's faster, lighter and with less recoil. I agree .22lr is a good self defence solution. I agree with you that there is really a small chance (for me the same as with you) to be involved in shooting. For real home defence I have a shootgun. When I go taking wildlife photography I carry 9mm Parabellum, because I live in a country with a lot of brown bears, wolves, living free. I'm doing wildlife photography for more than 40 years and never had to use my gun (even in close encounters). Thanks for your video.

All excellent points and almost exactly in line with my thinking. The only drawback to the 22lr I see in the scenarios mentioned vs things we have actually observed from active shooter situations is when there is a reasonable/possible opportunity to take a longer range shot with precision if the shooter is distracted and it may be worse for you to wait for that likely close up encounter. 22 will have significant drop and lack of punch at distance, especially from a snubby, but the probability of even finding yourself in that position is even less likely that the rest of the potential scenarios discussed here.

long range shot? I will have to say.. I think if I was in a situation like that, I would not take the shot and risk revealing my location, and as you said, snubs are not very accurate or powerful...

@@gunhobbywithdannythemedic well I practice a lot, but I’m confident on a 6” plate to 35 yards single action and able to take my time. “Longer” range shot for what a snubby is typically intended for is all I’m saying. Great videos/discussion.

Your logic is rock solid. I usually carry a 9mm Glock 43, but I have carried a Ruger SR22, a Cobra 22 magnum darrenger and a 22 magnum NAA revolver. When I had to sandblast my Glock 43 and Cerakote it, I carried a Ruger SR22 for the week I had my Glock apart for the refinishing. I even use to carry a Sig Mosquito and had a Sig 522 as a truck gun for a while when the country was rioting. I like 22lr. We have some of the same hobbies. I play bass and guitar, and have a gun hobby as well. I got an FPV racing drone hobby too, thinking the government would leave that hobby alone, but no. The FAA is acting like the ATF does.

You're not wrong. I carry something a big bigger, because I live in the country and I may have to deal with feral hogs. But, I don't dump on people's choices. If it works for you, its all good. It doesn't give as consistent wound channels, but, if you substitute quantity for quantity. As the saying goes, all hail the bullet storm.

IF I carried a .22 LR for self-defense I would alternate the rounds in the cylinder with Federal Punch and CCI Stinger hollow points. No one wants to get Punched and Stung. And you are correct to only use center fire firearms in auto, rim fire is only for revolvers when used in self-defense.

great vid you hit the point I have been carrying a gun almost all of my adult life with a lot of weight on my belt and I have a bad back and hips because of it I now carry a sw 43c with punch ammo and 2 10 round speed strips its enough I have seen people shot with 22lr and its not a good thing you will stop what your doing with a couple of rounds of 22lr to the face or chest do not think your going to walk away unharmed Im only going to save me and my wife now let all the youtube ninjas save the world thanks for the down to earth vid

Thank you for your post and I agree 22 is definitely a good calibre as a get off me gun for people in certain situations. Although it's not the best choice I've seen people come through the emergency room with multiple 9mm shots and survive and I've seen people with 1 well placed shot with a 22 not even make it through the doors. Whatever your choice is as long as it's a well placed shot and you can get 2 safety then that'll do. God bless and thank you for your common sense review..

thank you for your commen sense advice. a lot of people make you feel bad because you carry a 22. I'M 69 with arthritis in my hands,back and shoulders. the 22 is fine. the 9mm causes pain to shoot. i did buy a ruger pc9 carbine to range shoot and probably home defense for lack of strong recoil. thanks again

I carry a Phoenix Arms 10+1 . 5 rounds of CCI segmenting Hollow Point and 6 rounds of Federal Punch. A mccarbo spring in it and polished feed ramp. Hello from Lubbock Texas
