People say .22 doesnt penetrate but from what i've seen with ballistics testing, practically ALL of the the higher quality high velocity ammo like Federal Punch, CCI Stingers, Mini mags, Winchester Super X's are as reliable as centerfire and penetrate the necessary 12-15 inches

Hi.. I am very impressed.. I have been saying the same thing you do about 22 for years.. All of my friends make fun of me when I talk about a 22 as a every day carry. They all say 45… I just laugh.. I have repeated the same things you just said to them and they just Laugh.. The bottom line here is use what you feel the most comfortable and confident to carry.. Thank you for doing this video. Stay safe and always be kind and carry a firearm..

I agree with 22lr for defense for a few reasons; light and easy to carry so you'll likely have it with you, inexpensive to practice with so you should be a great shot, very little muzzle rise so fast follow up shots on target, etc. But the bottom line is effectiveness. All you have to do is discourage their aggression, stop the threat. The civilian objective is much different than security or law enforcement. I think, if i was hit ANYWHERE, with even a single 22lr round, i would stop whatever I was doing and RETREAT.

Thanks for the great video! I just turned 76, have never owned or wanted to own a gun, but finally decided to get a .22LR pistol solely for home protection. I had no clue what to get until a friend recently took me to a range and introduced me to .22, .380, and 9mm pistols. Between that and the real life points you mentioned, I'm sure the .22 is the right choice for its intended purpose.

no way dude, way too small. Will it kill your attacker?? maybe,.... eventually not after he beats u down bad and bleeds out later. glock30 small, easy too shoot, not too loud 45 auto is a nato round and leaves a good wound channel and is very concealable. Nice thing it doesn't kick very much. when that 45 shatters their sternum and hits their heart.... game over. 22lr is not always a "richochet round" despite the internet lore.

Totally agree. I carry a 9mm but I'm currently looking at purchasing a 22lr hand gun for self defense and if I can really improve my shooting accuracy, I'll most likely start carrying the 22. One of my main concerns is the noise, as you very well explained. Shooting from inside a vehicle, or in a home defense situation etc. it could even result in some degree of hearing loss, temporary or long term.

At such times, we need the simplest, most easy-to-operate and fool-proof solutions. Thanks. And by the way, that's a really nice watch on your wrist!

I am a 380 every day carry guy (The 15oz 13 shot Ruger LCP max is like black magic), but for a semi auto home defense rifle, I think .22LR is a vastly under estimated choice. I shot a .38 S&W Hammerless revolver. It has quite a recoil and a hard trigger pull. Would be hard to keep the barrel on target and shoot quickly. Shot a Luger 22. Another thing to consider if you want to carry a .22lr is that you may want to go with a revolver because of the nature of rimfire cartridges they are more prone to not going off than centerfire rounds and if you have a semi auto you're gonna have to cycle the action to get the next round in but with a double action revolver you just pull the trigger again.

I feel like the last three stats are the most important. One Shot Stop is nearly identical. Accuracy is nearly identical. % Actually Incapacitated by One Shot, higher for the 0.22. You have to give it to the smaller caliber. If you choose to use use a 0.22 cal, get magnum rounds, and practice with them. For me, I wish I could find a Poseidon Octo in steel, but for now, I may start looking for a 0.22 cal auto in aluminum.

.22 is effective its simple to understand why. Cheap ammo means more time training. Almost non existent recoil which means ur likely to put all shots on target even under stress. The bullet expends all of its energy in the target because it enters and stays inside vs a 9 or 40 cal punching a clean hole through you. There are stories of officers with .357 revolvers losing to bad guys that had .22's so they are definitely nothing to play around with. Hell i would pick up my taurus tx22 over my sig p320 in a home defense situation only because the .22 makes less noise and i doubt ill have time to wear ear protection lmao also less chance of overpenetration which is safer for my family and pets.

One thing I would add here as a dad of comepetive shooters down to 9 years is ammo choice in a .22. i think you addressed this in a comment. We dont let them risk their scores on bulk ammo. Cci mini mags, stingers or even cci standard goes boom everytime if it hasn't been kicked around... And were talking tens of thousands of rounds through their 10/22 and tippmann rifles. And their pistols. We intentionally insert plastic 22 rounds so they learn to clear a problem fast. These athletes can hit 5 x 10" steel plates with a .22 in 1.5 seconds from timer beep to done... if it was a single plate? The only time loss is raising the firearm from the beep to the plate. So .3 seconds and as fast as they can then fire. Under 1 second for sure. Some of the same athletes shoot 9mm rifles and pistols in different disciplines. They are fast at that but its almost a zero sum game and they have YEARS of shooting. Into the hundreds of thousands of rounds by then, generally. 1911 in 45 is the slowest and again, these youth athletes have more rounds down range than almost any civilian will in their lifetimes. I would NOT want to be in a two way firiring range at up to 25 yards (very long for self defense pistol) even with our most inexperienced. So new shooters? You may want to listen to this man. Getting Mozambiqued with a .22 is not something anyone is going to walk away from.

I have a 8 shot 22 magnum revolver with a 4 " barrel as my carry gun, I thought that choice was the most practical for the rimfire round, first its a revolver which lessens the chance of a dud round causing a failure to fire where I can just pull the trigger again to by pass the defective round ,where a semi auto I couldn't, next it has a 4" barrel to maximize accuracy and velocity and last it is the magnum round which is better than the standard 22LR, Just saying if you choose a 22 LR revolver get one with a 3 or 4 " barrel over a snub nose for the improved accuracy which also gives it a bump in velocity for power.

Very good points! One question, if the head torso accuracy is 76% 22lr v 74% 9x19- The fact that 60% vs 47%, actually incapacitated by 1 shot. Can accuracy really be the explanation? Also, 31% not incapacitated vs13%? 1 in 3! For the 22lr & 1 in 8! With the 9! So what happened to those 1 in 3 folks who couldn’t incapacitate their threat? Sounds like carrying the 22lr , and a 357 5 shot lcr may work ? Kidding.

Well done. Your ammo selection is a big deal, with hollow points less likely to penetrate multiple walls. Your ammo selection for the 22 is also important. One of the big difference is the ammo for the 9mmm is far more reliable than that of the 22. For self-defense purposes you should buy higher-quality 22 rounds. Penetration can be a problem if you're living in a cold environment where people are wearing multiple layers of heavy winter clothing. I've seen a lot of studies on 22 headshots and the bullet tends to go under the skin and slide around the head. Paul Harrell KZreadr does some excellent work on penetration of different calibres for those interested. Like you I absolutely love the 22, it's all the things you said and more. For those interested see the story of the cop who carries 147 rounds on KZread. He got in the gunfight I think with a 40 calibre pistol shot the guy 13 or 14 times and the gunfight continued. Within reason, I think you should carry the highest calibre you can shoot properly up to say a 40 calibre. The consensus seems to be a 22 calibre wouldn't be enough maybe A380 minimum. The 22 would also have limitations if for example your barricaded in your house and had to shoot to the door. There was a case of that with a woman protecting her two daughters in the bathroom I think she shot her 38 through the door 6 X hitting the assailant in the face. He went down to his vehicle drove away and died later. Excellent post much appreciate it I think the 22 doesn't get all the love it deserves. Fast reloads would be essential.

Any weapon you can consistently and accurately deploy under stress is the right tool to save your life or a loved one. Late 2 the party but 22 can very much travel thru walls like any other round. Smaller round seems good for hd regardless, but it snowballs drywall like crazy just like all the pistol calibers. Counterintuitively the consensus seems to be .223 vmax / frangs are one of few choices that *can actually minimize overpenning drywall much at all, and even then it's still capable of at least a couple rooms worth of drywall, there really isnt any round made yet that fully addresses the pen issue , great tests by supercrammo and other ytubers

@@mikem.2078 Vmax is a polymer-tip Varmint round made by several brands anywhere from 40 - 55 grain, designed to fragment on impact with any target or hard surface. Frangible rounds are open-tipped, no jacket, designed to disintegrate on impact, again made by several brands in varying loads. Both of these can still go through at least a few layers of drywall but will start to break up into smaller possibly less lethal pieces while also tumbling like a typical 223 bullet. Both offer less penetration than most pistol rounds, buckshot, and other rifle loads while still having good velocity and terminal ballistics in gel tests. Hornady Vmax Superformance are probably the most popular and available in different grains. Look up Supercrammo's channel and other youtubers' tests and do your own research / testing. there are many different brands and loads that are all pretty similar

Something I havnt heard yet from anyone advocating for 22lr is the ability of even a child to point shoot it with one hand and have accuracy since you can practice in all awkward poaitions alot aince a rape or kidnapping attack is uaually a close quarter fight and your using your other hand to wrestle and also you may set up your own ahooting range at home with a 22 and a silencer with worring about the neigjbors nor big powerful unpredictable rounds and no need for ear proteccion

Every person that i have trained, they all enjoy the 22LR over the 9mm. Even with a HEAVY framed 9mm with minimal recoil, its still more harsh than my 22LR ... When i go to the range, i will shoot off 200 rounds of 22LR thru my Keltec P17 .... I can mag dump it and maintain a 2-3 inch group at 30 ft. With my 9mm guns that i rotate out at the range, ill go thru 3 mags, maybe 4 at most with each gun. 9mm are great, they are just harder hitting guns and require more grip and handling and more time to re-aquire the red dot on the target.

From what (I) study about the 22 caliber used for protection against human-n- animals, the 22 has killed more people than any other caliber, it is used to kill wild hogs as will as pigs it also used to control small wild life such as coyotes, 22 magnum is very popular for a lot of people for home defense and farmers n ranchers with a little training with a 22 you can put a shot on center/ human or target with less recoil.

I would not dissuade someone from using a .22 for self defense or carry, but I will take issue with one statement: the .22 does not ricochet around the body. It may in some instances, but tests have shown that as a norm, it does not. However, the statement does give the user a bit more confidence in their chosen round. The biggest issue with .22 is choosing the wrong load and misfires due to primer loading. Anecdotally, there are doctors who say they see more deaths from.22 than any other round. For further discussion, check the FBI (can we really believe THEM?) records.

You forgot to mention that 22's are far more susceptible to locking up due to loose grip than a 9mm, and in most cases under the nervousness of a home invasion or a life or death situation most people will not hold the grip properly and this causing a misfire that can and will threaten your life. 9mm as all firearms have the same issue but it is far more common on 22LR's.

I’ve been saying this for a while. I can put 4 or 5 rounds on target with a .22 accurately far quicker than with a 9mm. My only issue with the rimfire cartridge is the rate of misfire so you have to match your firearm and ammo very well. I’ve experience up to about 40% misfires with bad ammo in a .22. Once that’s sorted .22 is great.

The reliability issue of rimfire ammo makes me drop it from consideration for self defense . .22 ammo is dirtier , affecting the firearms function , more cleaning is necessary. More force is needed from the hammer ,which usually means a stiffer trigger . This guy has some great points , but the"internal ricochet" idea is myth . .22 slugs will change directions , become deflected and tumble . A .32 S&W Long from a pistol has roughly the same fpe as .22 lr from a rifle barrel but making a larger hole . Not much recoil . I have heard from policemen and security guards that in practice with .22 magnum as their backup piece that they had not ever experienced a misfire , I would feel safer with that . Many new options these days in both hardware and ammo, I wish I could explore them all .

You said you're interested in doing less damage and that's what 22 does, but then you also say it does MORE damage and bounces around..? What? Also the one reason i don't think 22 is good for self defense (and other stuff aside hunting) is that they are a lot more prone to jamming. I'd prefer .25 or .32 because they don't have the rim jam magnet and more power to cycle properly, possibly with blunt or rubber tips... Or a rubber bullet 45 with a compensator. OR a s&w governor with shotgun or rubber shells, or any other load depending if you want more or less damage

I don't really understand the debate. Reason for 9mm is higher capacity and shorter range. Shorter range is a feature, not a knock for home defense. Unless you're living in like a palatial home measured in acres, the only issue with the longer range is gonna be when you miss and you don't want range for misses. As for the real world data, I think its partly self-selection. Like you said, its counter to what people expect. Because the people who go for 9 mm is most people, hence much more data. The people using 22 lr for self defense are people who are more likely to know what they're doing or hunting rifles. Either is fine, the most important part is the shooter.

Rimfire has about a 3% failure rate. I'd say center fire has a .1% failure rate or less. That's based off my range sessions and several YT videos testing reliability. When my life is tested, I think .1 is better than 3. Just my opinion of course. If adrenaline kicks in you could shoot a 45 and probably not know the difference. Easy way to decide what to carry is would you rather be shot by a 9mm in the leg or a 22 lr. Trust me 9mm doesn't recoil enough where you are incapable of followup shots unless you're grandma? What do you think would cause more damage? Honestly this guy looks like he has decent upper body strength. If he can't handle a 9mm then he is doing something wrong. People ate killed by rope strangulation and we don't put that on the list. Dieing in the hospital 3 days later from infection should count as a fatality. Death at time of being actually shot should. Watch Paul Harrell videos to dispell "some" of these myths, like the bounce around theory.

High velocity good quality rimfire definitely doesn’t have a 3% failure rate…. It’s notorious for its failure rate when people use bad ammo and or certain firearms but I’ve shit thousands of rounds through my mark 4 and had almost no failures. I shoot 9s with no issue but I’m in the range a lot and train a lot. Most people don’t. Recoil on a 9 vs a .22 is quite significant and for some it’s the better choice. Statistics are what they are whether you agree or disagree. Most beginner shooters are turned off by shooting because they feel pressure to shoot a higher caliber they aren’t comfortable with.

  • @EgardWatches

Also your analogy of where you would want to be shot isn’t accurate… statistics show it’s irrelevant which caliber you are shot with as attackers statistically speaking will flee regardless at that point. A more accurate analogy is would you rather have the .22 you can hit center mass with 3 times in a row or the 9 you hit the leg with.. because for many people who aren’t putting in the time that’s the difference.

Some very good points made , after watching many ballistic tests clothing is a big factor, hollow points get clogged with clothing and don't work as intended in both 22 and 9 . The standard 12+ inches of penetration can be achieved with both rounds. The biggest factor is reliability of the firearms and the ammo, the 9 is more reliable than 22 . The 22 being the dirtier cartridge requires that the firearm be cleaned and maintained in perfect working order for the best chance in reliability. Learning to overcome recoil of the 9 can be achieved with training, however with painful arthritis like I have it does still hurt to shoot. Choosing a full size heavier firearm helps with this condition, the Beretta compact all metal construction is much more forgiving than the Glock model 19 for soaking up recoil, the Glock model 43x considered the perfect carry size is hell to shoot for My hands although I can shoot it very well. One very important point I've heard is, No one being shot at says, hey what size caliber are you shooting at me with , is that a 22 or a 9 ? 😂 What really matters is your training and the ability to land shot's on center of MASS....FAST . AVOID SITUATIONS AT ALL COST THAT PUT YOU IN HARMS WAY PERIOD ! 🤠 Lawyer fee's will take everything you have even if it's a perfect case , remember that !

I agree that the 22 gets a bad rap as a self-defense caliber and you make some valid points, but there are going to be better options for many people, and the vast majority of knowledgeable people would say the same. Most importantly, the reliability of rimfire is being overstated here. Yes, keep a clean weapon and yes, buy quality ammo - you will still not approach the reliability of center-fire. That said, use the caliber that you can train and shoot most effectively. But, “effectively” is not a matter of pinpoint accuracy only, though; most people are going to shoot a 22 at least a bit more rapidly and perhaps more accurately than larger calibers, but we are not in match competition shooting circles. If one can’t train much, or has physical limitations in grip, racking the slide, or recoil management, the 22 is a nice option. The modern 380 can also be an excellent choice.
