As a cop I recall specifically two shootings where a 22LR was used, one shot fired to the chest. In both cases that one shot caused immediate incapacitation and death within minutes.

My wife carries the LCR .22 with Federal Punch ammo. She can put all 8 in a 4" circle at 7 yards. She has trouble getting 1 shot from my .380 or 9mm on the target at that range. If she has to use her gun, I would rather she hit 4 or 5 from the .22 than none with a larger caliber. And a 20 year police officer friend of mine is the one who recommended it to her.

I carry this gun as my daily CC. I'm 74 and have some degree of Arthritis in my hands and wrists. Some folks below have stated that the recoil of the 22LR is no less than the LCR 38 or 357. I have rented and shot all of those guns and there is no comparison, the 22 has much less recoil, plus your hand doesn't hurt after 50 rounds. I don't have any problem with the non-stacking trigger pull and the LCR is much smoother than an SW 43c. Since the cylinder holds 8, I load both CCI Mini Mags and CCI Velocitors. First shot Velocitor, 2nd shot Mini Mag, 3rd shot Velocitor...etc. Shot placement is important and since I train 2-3 times a month, I've gotten pretty accurate. I also have the Crimson Trace grip, which makes shot placement even easier. And since the recoil is practically nonexistent, I can pop a number of well-aimed shots within a couple of seconds. There is so much more to what makes a good CC weapon than caliber. The LCR can easily be worn in the waist, ankle, or in my pocket. Unlike an adjustable hat, one size does not fit all in determining what makes the ideal conceal carry gun. I respect others who feel more comfortable with higher calibers, but for me, this gun is the right fit and so I carry it all the time.

75 now, pain in fingers and hand. Forced to look for less recoil. Those young whipper snappers who criticize us will one day be in the same situation. If they live that long.

Anybody who says the recoil of the 22 LCR is no less than the LCR in 38 is absolutely off their rocker. Shooting +P defensive ammo out of the LCR is a painful experience. After one cylinder of that you will wish you had bought the LCR in .22 cal. The muzzle flip, muzzle blast and recoil of the LCR in 38 is off the charts. I can’t even imagine what a painful shooting beast it must be in .357.

I’m 69 and my wife is 68. We could have written this. My gun has a red laser, hers has green. We both carry a speed loader. Hence, when we are together we have 32 shots available. With no recoil, and the lasers, the bullets go where we need them to go, even under stress. Great post btw.

Thank you. Arthritis has ended my .45 / .357 shooting, but .22 is still doable. Hard to imagine, and in my younger days I never would have dreamed it, but things change.

I'm just hitting 54 and starting to experience some pains from a lifetime of martial arts on top of doing mostly Trade work (plumbing, etc.) I think you might look at some other calibers (if you haven't already) like .327 and .32 Auto. I don't have a .327 (yet) but I did pick up a Zastava M70 in .32 and it's fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate. I can still handle 9mm in both a full size M&P and a Shield. But, I want to build a collection of firearms for later as well. Not knocking .22 in it's various firearms, I've got several types as well. But there are some middle range calibers that are worth a look.

327 Federal Magnum chambered LCR will run 5 cartridges, all with different power levels. It's also a 6-shot revolver without any additional size compared to the bigger 38/357 LCR.

I also have arthritis due to diabetes.....I was thinking of still using my .357 in a rifle like the henry x model vs the stinging pain of my beloved s&w revolver ......Mos likely I will have to use pc carbine vs handguns due to deceased hand strength........I still love my revolvers and will look into .22lr and .22mag for the future

I love the light weight aspect of a 22 . It doesn’t pull down my pants!!

I bought a Ruger LCR 22 for two elemental reasons: eight shots…affordable ammo. Being retired, going through 100 rounds at the range with my .38 or 380 is an expense I wish to limit. I have no such inhibitions when purchasing 100 rounds of .22 lr. Plus, I don’t have to reload the Ruger as frequently as I did my S&W snubby. And yes, I have carried the LCR on occasion, with no concern for caliber effectiveness. After all, I have eight rounds, and I can practice enough to remain efficient.

LCR's are really good revolvers.

Things I liked about this video. Realistic perspective about self- defense. Shooting with one hand only. And well done script. Love my LCR in 22.

I smile at the '22 is suitable for weak people' argument, really a disclaimer to deflect being criticized by 'real' gun people who pocket carry 45ACP or some such. You're not alone protecting your reputation this way. Handguns poke holes in vitals, that's what they do, that's all they do regardless of imagination. 8 rounds at 1000 fps will do just that, causing the needed break in contact.

Then why does everyone issue out plus p rated 9mm pistols, as opposed to a cheap staple foods common 22lr, or even 32acp that was widely used in service before? Surely if that were the case, then a small and light service pistol with smaller cartridges and potentially magazines of around 20 rounds standard would be superior to a 9mm subcompact or even snappier snub nosed revolver, and yet those are what are used despite their harsher noise and recoil.

I carry my LCR .22lr every day. CCI mini mags. A Lasermax laser sight helps up close and use a Don't Tread On Me Holster Company CC6 in the waist band holster. I have a plate and screws in my right wrist with some minor nerve damage and the low recoil of .22lr helps me with my follow up shots.

I am a healthy adult male and I have carried just about everything under the sun over my years including on duty. I carry this gun because its so cheap to practice and I can hit what I aim at.

I am about to be in the same boat as you brother. I carry an lcp max but 380 ammo is so expensive and it's so snappy that I barely ever practice with it

I have been a ccw permit holder for over 40 years now and i own a lot of hand guns that have been on my side for years im 74 now and my old back and hips cant take the weight any more plus old hands so now the ruger lcr in 22lr or 22mag are my go to guns with 2 10round speed strips Im not under gunned in any way Im only going to save myself and my wife not the rest of the world let the tactical ninjas do that

Truth is every law abiding citizen would benefit from carrying a gun But some people don't like guns, can't afford training, or just don't have the time/will to train a 22lr is a pretty good option for those people

I don't think a pearson "poked" by a 22lr will just stay there and continue their robery. I thnk they'll have better places to be.

It's all about placement. If you hit someone center mass with a 22LR or even a .32 like the Beretta TomCat, they are going to have a bad day at the office. As with all firearms, make sure you get range time in and get comfortable with your carry. Be safe!

I bought one at Bass Pro..because it came with a deal for a can of 800 rounds of ammo for only 69 bucks more This was when 22lr was very scarce..

I prefer the lcrx. A longer barrel is always a plus in my book. especially with .22

Everything about the 3" is a bigger overall size. Unless you swap the stubby grip back and can accommodate the taller barrel rib in a holster.

I’d go with the LCR in .327 federal magnum and shoot .32 long or .32 magnum. It’s a bigger hole, it’s just as mild in recoil as a .22lr, it’s a more reliable center fire bullet, you still get 6 rounds. It’s the way to go.

yea, for sure. I don't understand why that caliber (.327 mag) hasn't taken off more. The ballistics are great and (in revolvers and less so in lever actions) the reverse compatibility with .32 H&R, .32 LC and .32 Colt (and some say .32 Auto) can't be argued with.

It's heavy, but it's very smooth and non-stacking with a very crisp break. Rimfire is heavy due to the need to generate some significant hammer strike energy on rim for reliable ignition. It might be a couple pounds overkill, but that's Lawyers for you. Might be able to swap the spring for something slightly lighter while retaining reliable strike force.

Not to be graphic or anything, but a few Federal Punches in the face of a perp will most likely cause that individual to stop what they were doing and reconsider. Just saying.

I like the video but there are starting to be some gel test videos out there (Paul Harrel being one) that show the Punch .22 to not be that much better than some .22 LR that have been out there for a while. I'm not saying the Punch .22's are bad...they just don't seem to be better than a couple others already on the market.

I was in a car accident in September, I lacerated my dominant hand thumb. I required twelve stitches and I have ligament and nerve damage. I my grip strength was compromised as well. I recently went to the range to teach my sons how to shoot, we shot a Ruger Sr 22lr. Then I shot my carry pistol a cz p10m 9mm. I was still able to properly shoot it accurately, but if needed to make faster follow up shots. I would feel comfortable shooting a reliable 22lr pistol like to Lcr22 or the Sr22 with some federal punch ammo.

Never understood why people say practice with a completely different gun and caliber. And not the one you usually carry. Practice with anything is always good. But practicing with something different than your EDC isn't. Especially if you practice with a 22lr and your EDC is a bigger caliber. Doesn't make sense in my opinion. And I don't do it.

I have a Ruger LCP in 380, which is very snappy for my arthritic hands. I'm considering the LCP2 lite rack in 22lr. I do feel that 22lr is best suited for revolvers given than a dud round will stop you from firing a pistol, whereas with a revolver, you can just pull the trigger again. What i don't like about revolvers is the double action trigger, the slowness to reload compared with a pistol and the lack of pocket carry ease compared with a micro pistol.

I run a city special for my J-Frame. I added a T1C wedge and a DCC metal clip and it is amazing! Disappears for both concealment and comfort while wearing it. Best rule #1 gun/rig combo IMHO.

Good ol Speer gold dot .22lr is getting 16” of penetration out of a 2” barrel. Not bad

If you can handle the recoil of a small 22 revolver, then you can for sure handle a larger framed .380 Semi-Auto.

I agree, but for many, recoil is just part of the equation. There’s al those so the functions requiring dexterity/sensitivity/range of motion ,such as, loading mags, reaching slide, handling malfunctions, lighter triggers (this would seem to be a bonus, but with declining sensitivity/dexterity, range of motion can be far more difficult to control). The revolver is simply a more gross motor movement choice, and less complicated to boot. I see stories often of deaths/damage done by 22 LR, it does seem that’s it’s quite capable for the task, as long as we’re not considering the steroid-jacked, PCP addled, psychotic guy behind a barrier guy I love my 380. I’d like to see a 6 rd .380 revolver that didn’t require moon clips with the cylinder cut like kimber it’s for thinness. Maybe ol’ Tommy Copper needs to make a padded palm, textured fingered arthritis relieving glove 😅

Friends, There was a case in So Cal in the 1950s or'60s of two polcemen shot by a vagrant. Routine traffic stop, both officers shot in the back 3 times with an H&R .22 snubbie. Loaded with .22 Longs, not even Long rifle!! Both tragically died. RIP gentlemen!!

I have an lcr in 22wmr I bought it with the intention of getting my wife into carrying I went with the 22wmr because even though they are not the best self defense rd they are significantly better than 22lr in achieving adequate penetration I have not found any hollow point rds that expand reliably so I carry it with fmj because of the low recoil it is very easy to put multiple rds in the same spot quickly and penetration is consistent within FBI standards

Slower follow up shots and less accuracy is more detrimental than slight increase in penetration. Shot placement and speed is paramount.

The kick is less but with a revolver you may get a little better bullet function but the pull is about 11 to 12 lbs. if you have hand issues I suggest the lcp light rack or a Taurus TX .22 for a larger gun.

Exactly. My 80 year old Mother could not handle the recoil on the .38 lcr, but could not pull the trigger on the .22 lcr. She can handle the S&W .380 shield ez.

a .22 LR bullet is capable of inflicting very serious injuries (e.g. the four people wounded during the Reagan assassination attempt) or death e.g. the Kauhajoki school shooting (11 killed and 1 wounded), the Jokela school shooting (8 killed and 1 wounded), or the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting (2 killed and 8 wounded) as well as the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy. Numerous other shooting incidents have demonstrated that .22 LR bullets can easily kill or seriously injure humans

I have a LCRx 22 magnum. Great gun, BUT if hand strength is an issue….the LCRx has a heavy trigger.

I tried one at the fun store a while ago. I'm a granny and found the DA trigger pull quite acceptable. It's smooth and crisp.

If you have "hand strength" issues you will not be carrying a DAO revolver like the Ruger LCR with a long, heavy trigger pull for every shot. The .22 LR round also has poor stopping power. In 'Street Stoppers' the best .22 LR round was the CCI Stinger 32-grain JHP (34%). The best .32 ACP load was the Winchester Silvertip 60-grain JHP (63%), while the best .380 ACP load was the Corbon 90-grain JHP (70%). There are lots of low recoil .32 ACP and .380 ACP pistols around (e.g., Beretta Tomcat, Glock 42, Glock 28, etc.). If you have strong fingers but arthritis in your wrists so can handle the long, heavy trigger pull of a DAO revolver but not the recoil of a small .38 Special, 9mm or .357 Magnum revolver, then get a revolver chambered for the .32 H&R Magnum round (S&W 632) or .327 Federal Magnum round (Ruger LCR) and use a low recoil .32 H&R Magnum load in it like Federal's Personal Defense load (85-grain JHP), which I would expect to work as well as the Corbon .380 ACP load (same type of bullet with very similar weight, velocity and energy). A .380 might work for the lady. Light recoil, ok power, but getting expensive.

The .22LR or Mag are not horrible choices but low recoil .38Spl or .38Short Colt are better choices. Any .38spl can be loaded with both.

Point blank range, 22 is going to kill

22mag would be a better choice if you have arthritis or something.

Just go with 22tcm

If a person has limited hand strength they can't handle the heavy DA trigger of this revolver.

It is a hole puncher! What can you hit! A head is a dinner plate and the brain to the top or second bottom on a shirt is central nervous system…lights out!

If you don't have some sort of medical problem you should not choose a .22 for it's low recoil. It has its place for being all and ultra light, but if you should carry something stronger.

Carrying a .22 is a bad carry. Yes recoil managment is good and easy to hold. But due to limited availability of self defense ammo, poor ballistics, especially regarding wound channels. And the fact that I have been shooting .22 for years and .22 ammo is questionable regarding reliability no matter the brand. I'd still go a step up to .380 at minimum.

Obviously a larger caliber would be better. There isn't a medical examiner that would want to be hit with the 22.

22lr in a revolver is more reliable than a 380 in a semiauto that may jam. Revolver you simply pull the trigger again. Semiauto you need to clear the jam and rerack the slide. All during a defensive situation.
