Is Rashaad Penny actually good? | Film Room

Спорт

Throughout the first four seasons of his career, Rashaad Penny has been pretty disappointing in the NFL. Now this isn’t a hot take or anything like that. When you’re drafted in the first round and you only break 500 rushing yards once in a single season and that happened in your fourth year, I think this is objectively true. Well, this past weekend, Penny had his third 100-yard rushing game of the season. Against the Lions, he finished with 170 on 25 carries, and he also collected two scores. In this video, I wanted to go through his last four games and talk about what I saw on film.
Is Penny proving that the Seahawks should extend him? Or is Penny just a flash in the pan, and they should move on? Before we do that though, if you can do me a huge favor and like and subscribe to my channel. I’d greatly appreciate that.

I agree with your breakdown! I think he has the upside that's worth resigning IF it's a reasonable deal. Will not overpay because his style is too boom or bust + injury history. So it comes down to the offers he receives around the league and if they're overpaying or if we can match a reasonable contract.

I’d bring him back on a one year minimum, and see how the backfield does with him and Carson splitting carries. If neither of them can stay healthy I’d let Penny walk and trade Carson, I know people say RB is the easiest position to fill but there just aren’t that many good backs in the market within our price range while trying to rebuild other core positions on the team

I think we should, and I think up to 4 mil a year is worth it. You mentioned 2 mil a year max though. In your opinion, what's the usefulness/value of that extra 2 mil in cap space? Is that value worth more than a genuine home run threat in the backfield?

This analysis confirms why Pete wanted the Carson + Penny duo so bad, they compliment each other's games perfectly. In games when Penny cannot created holes you can play Carson to run through people with brute force, and when there are holes and the blockers are succeeding, you play Penny to hit the home run.

@@PeteMD agreed Penny is a home run threat. Home run threats like cook, JT, Henery get better with carries. Carson should only come in when Penny is winded. Penny has all his college confidence back and the reason why he wasn’t performing and getting injured because he would only get 4 carries a game. Then when he got in he would pull a hamstring. I’m a running back to and when you’re the size of Penny and don’t get warmed up in a game and suddenly thrown out into the game in the 4th you might tweak something or won’t take contact right. Penny should have 85% of the carries next year. Carson is only good for getting those 6-8 grind yards.

In his career with the Hawks, he's not gotten the reps to get into a "flow" or "rhythm" with his O line.....until the past few weeks. Now that he's gotten 15+ carries per game, look what he's done!! In seeing his highlights, particularly in slo-mo, I've personally been missing just how good his line-blocking vision really is, and his breakaway speed is surprisingly good for a bigger back. IMHO, the only concern I have is his durability. I'd be willing to spend the money in keeping him to find out. One other question i have.....I haven't looked up his receiving stats; does anyone know if he has good hands, catching the ball out of the backfield?

Part of me values the ROE% more than per attempt. I say part, because it's just theoretical (consistency, and not being skewed by outlier runs - in that way per-attempt is no better than YPC). In practice, how many more runs per game over expected is the number 1 guy in ROE getting you, compared to the 15th, 20th, etc guy? It would probably suffer from the same issue (single game sample size), but I wish the raw data was available, so we could calculate a success-rate over expected (or just total successes over expected). A guy who turns an otherwise negative EPA run into a positive one (even if he doesn't break off a huge gain), on a regular basis, would be pretty valuable, imo.

Samuel, I enjoy your video breakdowns and I find you've seen things that a lot of NFL teams haven't themselves seen in their players, and once again your analysis is very eye-opening. The lion's share of yearly budget was eaten up by Wilsons overpayment (yes he was over-payed - if you are trying to win championships see how Tom Brady does it) and subsequently the consequence of that is having an offensive line that isn't able to do adequate blocking to give Penny the open looks that would make him explosive as you've shown here. If the o-line are able to get Penny the open speed to get explosive - they could be the top running team in the NFL which sets up play action - and with number 14 as a receiver as well as Lockett to keep the secondary honest, they could be unstoppable. Penny is worth every 'penny' - he's not the budget problem or even a concern (and injuries should not be a determination of whether they are worth paying or not - are we seriously punishing someone for being injured?) Wilson's overloaded budget makes it challenging to build an o-line that can do the job it needs to do. Wilson needs to think championship first - but let's see if he's even a Seahawk next year.

When Penny and Barkley were drafted I honestly (maybe stupidly!) thought that Penny was the better player. Barkley was too on and off for me, and definitely did not seem to carry his explosion through the entire game and created too many negative plays. To watch Penny struggle with health throughout his career so far is disappointing. However, I have always liked the person, and there aren't too many running backs out there that can claim regardless of blocking in front of them 5.5 yards per carry for their career. This year he finished with 749 rushing yards on 119 carries if I'm calculating correctly for a whopping 6.3 yards per carry, and this recent team the Hawks destroyed was pretty good against the run. He tied for the most 25-yard gains in the league at a third of the carries of the other guy. He has definitely played himself into a higher than league minimum type contract, and good for him. I hope the Hawks can work him into their plans at a reasonable rate. You not only need talent, you need depth, and they can look to add another guy in the draft.

Imagine, had Penny rushed like he did the last 5 of 17 games for the whole season, he would have gained 2281 yards (2147 in a usual 16-game season) - more than LA Rams' Eric Dickerson's all-time rushing record of 2105 yards in 1984!

am i the only one thinking that this dude reminds me of Marshawn Lynch when he was early in his career? Obviously lynch broke more tackles and made more out of nothing, but penny is showing that he can be good against good defenses after just dusting the cardinals defense week 18.

Yes. He’s good - when healthy. He’s played very well in those games; his issue unfortunately has been availability - not necessarily his fault.

That seahawks O-line blocks about HALF as well as the Eagles O-line. If Penny stays healthy, he's going to have a very good year. Not a GREAT year, because he won't get ALL the Carries. Eagles like Gainwell a lot and rightfully so. But Penny's stats will be yooge.

Is he good.. or not, is not the question. The real question is, is he a professional? It's no coincidence his last 4 games of the last season of his four year contract were good. If he didn't turn it on, at a level he hasn't in 4 years, he would be lucky to get a 1 year league minimum contract this fall. Does he have the heart to come to camp healthy and ready... and does he have the heart to take the starting job and deliver those performances week in and week out?

I'd only sign him with a minimum to 1.5 with incentives, anything else would be nuts.

If u can get him cheap, u keep him, Carson is basically done. N not reliable at all. I love Carson, but with an on going neck injury, they knew about signed him. N tried to play it off, he was suppose to be out like a couple weeks not the season. We need options n Penny can do it if hes healthy. We also need to find a rb to actually be the starter in the meantime.

I agree Penny shouldn’t get more than $2 Million per year considering his injury history. What about a year “prove it deal?” I think that would be the best option? I’m afraid a team that’s desperately seeking a #1 RB will pay Penny far above his worth❗️Based on the last 6 game’s of the season. Since CMAC’s ( Christian McCaffrey ) $64 Million 4 year deal, NFL teams aren’t paying RB’s that much anymore because you can find talent in the 7th round (Chris Carson was a 7th rounder) who started his rookie year. I’m afraid that Seattle will get into a bidding war over Penny, and Seattle is not going to pay him more than $2-$3 Million per year. So we could either try and resign Penny & hope Carson can return from a serious neck injury and be even stronger than ever! A 2 headed monster of Carson & Penny would be one of NFL’s best 1-2 Punch❗️We don’t have good depth in our RB room either. While Homer is a great blocker/3rd down back, DJ Dallas and Alex Collins should be released. Seattle could draft a RB with 1 of their 2 4th round picks and add another in free agency! And with an improved o-line❗️It should help the running game tremendously! And we all know that running the football set’s up the long play action and Wilson’s sweet deep ball into action! Great analysis! #GoHawks

I like your analysis but I think you're completely incorrect on how they can go about re-signing him. 1. He's not going to cost much if they want to sign him longterm. No team is going to offer him that much because he's far too injury prone and he's far too inconsistent (up until the second half of the season.) What they can do to guarantee he's on the team next season is sign him to the franchise tag so it becomes another 1 year prove it deal and the price for RBs on the franchise isn't nearly as expensive as other positions. This would then allow the Seahawks to turn their attention on the more important player, Quandre Diggs.

Hes to relient on good line play which the Seahawks will never have under Pete. His conditioning is terrible, he cant stay in for more than a couple plays. His initial speed and cuts arent elite. He doesnt catch and he's hurt too often. Too much has to go right and he only did this against terrible teams and probably a Cardinal team underestimating them. Hes a solid 2nd string RB. If we get him cheap eh ok, if not I pitty the team leaning on him as a workhorse lol
