In my latest video breakdown, I wanted to look at Christian McCaffrey's skill-set and how the Carolina Panthers use him in their offense. For this breakdown, I tracked all of his carries so far on season by alignment, formation, motions, and play design. Hope you enjoy!

    Same type players, kamara has a better more accurate QB, and and OL. Brees seems to throw balls perfectly leading the receiver. Cam seems to pass it where McCaffery has to catch and a stop and then run. The one time he was hit in stride was a perfect pass against New Orleans in the playoffs, and it was a Touchdown.

    Cam vultured a lot of his red zone touches so, while Mcaffery got a ton of yards and receptions Cam got most of TDs. TDs are what the talking heads on ESPN and NFL network like to point to the most so he was left out of a lot of discussions. There's no doubt though, that Mcaffery and Newton feed off each other. LBs are contstantly frozen at the second level wondering whether the ball is with Cam or with CMac. Cmac's importance to the panther's offense is hard to deny

  • @vinrusso821

    @vinrusso821

    5 жыл бұрын

    All I know is Cmac was probably worth 2 wins last year. His 4th quarter TD put them in position to win the playoff game with N.O.. He was only behind Cam in 1st downs, with minimal touches.He catches 80 passes, they talk about 3.7 yds a carry, Stewart had 3.8 per carry. In college McCaffery was a RB that needs fed the ball, 3 yd gains, 4 yd gains, and then boom he hits a hole for a TD, he has to get in a rhythm.

    In my opinion, it's because of Kamara. I'm a Carolina fan, and I REALLY like CMAC but I'm not completely sold on him being RB1. I think he'd be an absolute monster as a slot receiver though. It's probably more of me being so used to the Williams/Stewart combo we had as well as the Davis/Foster one before that. He's had some really good games this year though so he's growing on me, cause I don't think he's going anywhere anytime soon. Pins and needles stuff when we get 3rd and 1, or 2.... and it's more likely Cam is gonna call his own number to get those yards rather than having a bruiser who rain or shine can get those chains moved.

    Jaylen mills gets burnt on double moves every single game & gets too many penalties. Add in the safety being hurt for the year plus Brandon Graham struggling n the eagles D is soft. Being an eagles fan I'm hoping they can turn it around but I dont see it happening till next season. Winning the superbowl takes a lot out of players because it's such a long season.

    That OL as you say played well, but all but one are 2nd string. 4 of the starters have been hurt. You see slow motion film and think it's easy. If a RB doesn't have some hole he's stopped, the secret is finding your own holes.. Good runners have good OL. Zeke had the best. Those holes you see close in about 2 seconds, CMac hits them fast. He had almost 190 yds,, believe me they weren't all big holes.

    thb that first play example that u used didn't look like a read option to me. It looked like a power run where cam just carried out a fake keep to the left to keep the DE from trying to crash the hole. That second play looked like it wasn't an option either it just looked like a dive with a fake triple option look off that to set up something later. like on that first play im not the greatest expert but i have never seen anyone pull on an option run(except a te on a wrap block) having the lineman pull on an option(especially covered lineman) can kill an option because if the d lineman follow them the play is dead.

  • @SamuelGoldNFL

    @SamuelGoldNFL

    5 жыл бұрын

    They are both options and I've seen Cam Newton pull both multiple times. Watch the Dallas game at Q1 9:56 and Q2 6:27. It's the same play design as the first one except Newton keeps both since the DE crashes down. I'll need to find the second one again, but I've definitely seen it.

    @@SamuelGoldNFL I guess i need to update some of my football knowledge cuz im not really up to date on option plays with pulling line man. Everything i was taught says that penetration kills the option and having guys pull wud cause plays to not work as well. I always loved the option offense and i even know a lot about the flexbone but in the nfl i guess they have to be more precise in the blocking schemes on options because in the nfl the offensive lineman cant run out and cut everyone on a triple option like they can in college( from a article i read in SI that may be coming to an end tho)

    Despite what you say CMac is rather scheme dependent as he has trouble running inside without options, motion, fakes, downblocks and other assistance. He gets yards on his own because defenders are often off balance and sometimes are forced to reach and take bad angles on him. To his credit, he's gotten stronger in his upper body since he's entered the league and like the Nickerson play he can now occasionally break a one and one tackle purely on his own. Basically, he's a good but not great athlete at the NFL level and does a lot of things well but nothing outstanding. His versatility is his biggest attribute. He has few obvious weaknesses and no one works harder. In this scheme it might take him to great heights.

    Of course, he was ranked higher, Even though CMac dominated him in every event at the combine. His vertical was 7 inches higher!! I said before the season last year that his style will keep him injured. He had a lot of yds last year, but not a big average per carry. Him CMac and Devon Cook were the "Big 3" of the RB's in the draft..It's too early to call but Cook is hurt again and Fournette is getting less carries, and injured. Cmac is just getting rolling, of course an injury can happen anytime.

    Apparently you haven't been watching Panther games. It's the opposite. Teams are game planning CMac, and it's making things open up. Last game 4 TD's were McCaffery fakes, the defense bites, and Cam walks in. CJ Anderson TD was a fake pass to the left sideline to CMac, the defense swarmed, CJ was wide open on the right side fir an east TD. Dallas game both TD's were McCaffery fakes. He is so important to this offense, hope he doesn't get hurt. Those are tough yds, and he can't keep taking that.

    I am SHOCKED you did not MENTION one time the THREAT of Newton keeping the ball!!! Not once!! There is a lot of hesitation by defenders on those options! Especially backside pursuit!! I see it in REAL time watching the game, and I also saw it in your film study. McCaffery is good but, I willing to bet he couldn't do this with Blake Bortles handing the ball off to him. With no threat for Cam keeping the ball this dude would not be this good. Cam added like 2-3 more years of life to Stewart's career. Norv Turner is earning his money!! He added the option of Cam keeping the ball on most of McCaffery's designed runs. Watch how teams crash Leonard Fournette as opposed to McCaffery.

    Are you kidding me? Cam Newton is highly overrated. He's a bust waiting to happen. The Panthers will win some games this season, but Newton is not capable of taking them the distance. I am, obviously, a fan of McCaffrey. Have been since he was at Stanford. The guy was, and can be again, amazing. If he were a back with the Patriots, a team that knows how to use terrific runner/receiver types exactly like Christian, he would break records during his career. They are underusing him in the offense they have, and Newton, from the options I've seen him select, time and again, takes the run option instead of passing the ball to a wide-open McCaffrey with plenty of running room between Christian and the man who is covering him. I can't count the times I have shouted in anger. Pass the ball to McCaffrey with a two-yard distance between him and his defender and he is going to make something exciting happen. Backs and receivers who are successful for a long stint in the NFL, are consistantly given the ball, are used in the exact manner by which they found college success. Owners and coaches who select someone like McCaffrey, after watching all his achievements in college, observing his gifts and style, and then draft him into a system that doesn't use that player in the same way? What are they thinking? Newton is into the whole thing for the show. All players are, to a degree, but those who focus, those who attain greatness, those who keep stolid performances and reputations, very seldom do it by grandstanding.

    Pay attention to what you read. I said that Newton is a bust "waiting to happen." There are many players who come into the league with impressive athletic ability and bombastic attitude. They show promise at first, but with a bit of innate football savvy and a keen eye in evaluating gifts against flaws, the obvious becomes obvious. Cam is too into himself to be into the game.

    You must be joking? Dalvin Cook is not even is the same conversation. Until he can play 3 games without getting hurt. At the combine it was easy to see who was the best, it was just difficult for them to say it, even though he broke Sanders all time record. Of the "Big 3" CMac had the fastest 40, highest vertical by 7 inches!! Broke the short cone record time from Beckham. His pass routes were smooth as silk. CMac if healthy will blow they're numbers out of the water. Look at the Fournette site, I predicted after the draft that Fournette would be hurt constantly.
