The LE is a definite improvement over the OG's combat and leveling system. There were many points in the OG where you could just get stuck and be unable to progress because you didn't level the right things or didn't build your team or character properly. Also the bugs were unreal by 2023 on Win10. Lots of crashes to desktop. I would save every 5 minutes because more than once I'd crash, reload, and realize I didn't quick save since the start of the mission. This doesn't happen in the LE. Only thing I had to fix so far was the 5.1 bug. By default, ME1 still plays with 2 channel sound even if you have surround sound configured on your PC. I'd say the first game still isn't as "tight" as the other two. But it's hardly unplayable. Just expect some early 2000s jank with just about everything in the game. I think it adds to the charm and nostalgia, myself.

Good video my man. I'm replaying Mass Effect right now(1st time on Legendary Edition) and I think ME1 combat is really bad compared to ME2. I just completed the first game and the difference is really huge, ME2 feels just so much more responsive and smooth. The balance is also kinda crappy in 1 since powers have ridiculously long cooldowns and there isnt much weapon variety. Overall I'd say Mass Effect 1 wasnt really as good as I remembered from the gameplay standpoint but I always liked its story the most.

Its not great, but it has ONE thing ME2 and 3 lack, and its something I cant believe the removed.. Crouch. Crouch allows for so much more in combat. Instead of this bullshit "press X button to hide behind this obstacle". You know, the SAME button that also means "JUMP OVER OBSTACLE". It was such a dumb call and one of the major frustrations in later ME games.

Agree, when I turn down the difficulty and go ham with biotics and powers, ME1 combat (in the Legendary Edition atleast) is fun enough for me to enjoy myself with!

@@DoctorEpicPhD a faithful recreation of 95% of ME3 powers to ME1, complete with projectile biotics, class powers (biotic charge, invisibility cloak, etc), full VFX, and even notable different "tiers" in some powers (combat drone changes color depending on what level it is). Its a really cool mod but its been slow to come to completion. The demo was showcased one or so years ago but i can confirm the modder is still making progress on it, as he wants to ensure compatibility with other mods and he seems (at least to my amateur eye) to be close to release.

i say 95% because the only ME3 power i didnt see from him was the sentry turret, so the engineer would only have the drone. Also the tech powers are projectile as well.@@DoctorEpicPhD

I would say it's fun and adequate but not good. We have to take to the account that the game is 16 years old and other games from that period were much more one-sided i.e. combat, driving, rpg. What Mass Effect did was it it all in one go: it had combat, exploration, rpg-elements and very good plot. The combat was not the sole focus, although it was in big part. That's why we shouldn't be comparing the combat to other games from the era that focused solely on the shooting part. ME-series tried many things and evolved during the years, cut stuff people didn't like and added new stuff to try it. Like the driving in ME1 which i liked but no one else did so it was cut. Or the resource scanning in ME2 which i liked but no one else did so they cut it.. Development is trying new stuff and seeing what works. Can't get everything right in the first go and it's ok. Oh and Happy Christmas!

I replayed game like 3 times, with different classes, and I loved it. BUT there is no balance, especially if you play at max difficulty. It is definitely much easier to play as shock trooper and have fun with shootguns 😎🫡❤ can't forget it.

I don't like too complicated fighting systems in RPG games where the story is the reason why I play. However, fighting in Mass Effect 1 is... exceptionally boring, along with the evolution of the character. I chose the fighting style, put points in it and... nothing happens. The differences are negligible and enemies seem to scale, so combat at level 1 is the same as with maxed up character. There is no decision to develop the character. No matter what type of gun I choose, the combat will be mostly the same. I know because I consciously chose different weapons for different characters and nothing has changed. There is no feeling that leveling made any change. Besides, I really dislike guns in RPG games. I am bad at aiming, and it doesn't give satisfaction as combat with a melee weapon. 99% of fights are easy, and when I came across the ones that aren't easy, I don't know why and what to improve. The game doesn't let me develop any skill to use in such fights. Maybe those who like some shooter games will have fun, but for me the combat is impersonal and dull, while in some fights it is frustrating, because it feels like it's just a matter of luck. I prefer even point-click systems like in Morrowind, which people complain about, but those are perfect for this type of game. Shooting in ME1 is simple, and yet the system is superficially complicated just to be tedious and to create the impression that there is something behind it - there isn't. Point and click would be a more honest approach. What the combat system is lacking is some strategy skills, which come from various area effects, which ME1 don't have or at least I don't remember it to have.

Yeah, combat isn't exactly ME1s strongest quality I can't deny that, it feels more like down-time between the "good stuff" in the story! 😅
