To me the scrolling effect looks like he's running in a circle. Like in a large arena. With that mindset I don't find the effect as disorienting as most people. I still have to look away from the screen every few minutes. Also worth noting that the developers are Fernando Velez and Guillaume Dubail who are responsible for many impressive system pushers for generations. V-Rally and Test Drive for GameBoy. V-Rally 3, Driv3r and Asterix & Obelix XXL for the GBA. COP: The Recruit for the NDS and Ironfall for the 3DS just to name a few. They were miracle workers. Just like Traveller's Tales on consoles they pushed the handhelds beyond their breaking point. Alas Velez died at the age of 46 in 2016. Edit: Why I'm telling you all this? I have no idea.

I love how the plot in the instruction manual perfectly explains the lack of any real enemy AI (as the countdown timer is your 'cloaking device'). Immersion intact. That's storytelling at its finest :)
I really enjoy your reviews. Keep up the good work.
I've been playing Gym Power which is a gym management simulator.
Love it! I received this game as a Xmas present in the mid 90s. Just got a SNES so all my extended family bought me random games, and this was one of them. I enjoyed the hell out of this one even though I never got past level 3 - you were spot-on regarding difficulty!

Also, fun fact - the 3D glasses that came with the game actually worked on Donkey Kong Country, too! Gave it a nice additional level of depth.
i got a portable emulation device recently... rs-97, i watched this channel before I got it, but now I think i've seen every video. They are all so concise and to the point.

Such a difficult game to beat one of the hardest videos I have ever done but that soundtrack is jamming another great video thanks :)
Great! I was waiting for this!
The sprites look very detailed in this game, which is impressive for the SNES. Also could emulating and disabling the background layers help improve the game?

I had a similar thought, I'm also curious as to how much tinkering with a game genie would be required to attain the same effect on a physical cart (got one for free from a very nauseated buddy). I feel like mine might be a pipe dream though.

Woah there are still SNES games I have never seen before/heard of! Thanks SNESdrunk!!
As soon as the footage started my first thought was that it looked like an Amiga title. Something about the style of the sprites and music jolted some memories or something.
One of the most underrated SNES games ever.
Use to love this game back in the 90's it was very hard though. It Had amazing graphics and sound for its time
Don't think this game could have been summed up better in under 5 minutes. Great vid!
Finally! This is one my favorite oddball games!
I didn't think much of the '3D effect' but as the video progressed I started to get a headache and it progressively increased drastically XD Went away half a minute after the video ended so I know it was the background :P So while it doesn't disorient me or give me vertigo or whatever it subconsciously triggers something. I can only imagine how bad it actually is when playing first hand D:
Thanks for the video, man!
Another good vid! When I 1st saw this game (last year) I was pretty blown away. Then I got a headache lol
I feel like this is so ambitious for back then- I appreciate that
Have a nice rest of your day guys!!
This game looks like nausea-central, but it warms my heart to hear anyone giving U.N. Squadron some love.
I have found no other game on the Super Nintendo it gives me the same feelings as Jim Powers does. It's that "whoa what is going on no seriously what is going on why is the background doing that"
I can actually see the 3D effect is I half close one eye, it's pretty cool!
Never heard of this game before....It looks interesting....the different background layers and how they move seem to have a "Tilt-a-whirl visual effect....(that's a carnival amusement ride where you pull and push a handle which makes the "Car" you are in spin around in circles)
This actually looks awesome to me. I'll be taking a look and having a playthrough myself. Never knew of this game before.

Awesome review.but to be fair this game is a real technical demo the SNES could do ! it's impressive how the game manage the background and those effects even it's hard to play ..
The title screen music for this game is epic bit you have to sit on the option menu to hear it. Its almost 10 mins long
Funny enough, the original Amiga version still tried to be fancy about its scrolling, but made more sense with the directions the layers went and thus wasn't as nauseating (plus not as much as moving). Also, the stage one music might sound vaguely familiar to Ys 3 fans, as the composer had played that game in the summer leading up to composing for Jim Power, so he might have inadvertently taken a little inspiration without realizing it at the time.
Lol this is one of your funniest videos yet. Love the sarcasm!

With the Sega Gens collection out in PS4 and coming out on the switch you should do a straight review on it or just the top games worth playing on it!
The graphics are quite nice to look at, despite the odd 3-D effect. I'm surprised I had never heard of this series before.
You mention the Steam version, despite what it said in the description it didn't include the NES version, until recently. They were working on a new NES version for years, then the original game's creator passed away, so after renegotiating the rights they finally finished it this year. The NES version plays pretty well. There's no wacky parallax scrolling for one thing. The game is a lot more balanced but it is still very hard. I'm honestly surprised they put so much effort into it considering how unknown Jim Power is!
Paralax like that only makes sense if you're running around a tower, which is where other games use the same effect (Though they do it better mind you).
The piece of music at the beginning is pulled straight out of Ys 3's fire stage.
There is also a MS-DOS version that features a much needed life bar, to me the best version overall.
man, every time i find a snes game at a good price, i take a look at your review, cheers.
I actually grew up with this game. I have thick nostalgia goggles for it. I used my allowance to buy this at toys r us. I lost my 3D glasses but I still have my cart. :D

Well this came up in my recommendations. Would you consider a do-over for this review since Piko has new NES and Mega Drive versions of the game coming out?

This game is hard enough to just watch it, I couldn't imagine trying to play it!
i hope some day someone makes a rom hack that reverses the background parallax scrolling

Well you are far better than me at gaming. I couldn't beat it even using saved states.
Holy sh*t! Dudes, I just discovered that if you simply hold a pair of sunglasses to your eyes, holding them diagonally so you cover only your left eye with them, and then view this game with both eyes open, you can actually see the 3D effect working. It's actually pretty dang cool! 😲 Shame the game is way too hard and clunky to play. Might have been decent if you could actually move while shooting, standard enemies didn't take multiple hits, and the jump wasn't so gimped. Being able to up and diagonally would have been nice too. But that stuff isn't fixed so it's a bit of fail imo.
I don't get motion sickness from this, just irritation and anxiety. I've always wondered if it's possible to hack the rom to fix the parallax background layers to scroll at a normal rate. Might require source code.

Can't even watch this video without feeling sick... Great review! (but I wish I had only listened to it)
Why are the background layers moving in the wrong direction? Is he running in a circle?

It's a good candidade for a hack. Fix the scrolling thing and you're good to go.
Steam version? Oooh, once I get the specs I've been saving up for my new PC, I'll get that. I do have the right specs for it, but modern games wise, I have like toaster parts
Wow 😮🎮
As a general word of advice for everyone who is interested in buying the Steam package: do *NOT* buy the Steam version. Please. Sure, I understand that 5$ for quite a bit of versions of the game is a tempting deal, but I believe the whole product is a bit of a scam. I'll get the most upsetting point out of the way first: The missing content, three years after the package's original release. Ever since September 2015, Piko Interactive promised the complete Genesis version, as well as the unreleased prototype for the same console (which existed ever sicne the 90s). And to top it all off, Piko also advertized that a unique NES version, developped in-house by the publisher. However, as of today, those three versions still haven't appeared in any of the package's releases, so I think its safe to assume that the NES project was abandoned, and that the complete Genesis version never existed to begin with. Although I still can't really see why the incomplete Genesis version wasn't released as well, since you can now easily find it online, if you look hard enough... And apparently, there was also a "High Quality Soundtrack by Chris Huelsback" (Yes, this is a typo) that was promised as DLC as well, but though I am unsure what this actually means, its safe to say that it will not show up as well. But what about the stuff that's actually present? Well, the DOS and SNES versions are there, and those two work well enough, barring some issues with fullscreen compatibility on the SNES game. But even then, you still have to run DOSBox manually, as if you were using an emulator, which I gotta say, is really strange. However, the "Enhanced" SNES version is actually quite lame. All it does is give you a bit more continues, give you two hearts per life - which are actually only extra lives in disguise - and fixes the obnoxious parallax scrolling featured in the original game. But even then, Piko managed to f*ck up the scrolling when the players dies in a side-scrolling stage (which happens **often**, believe me) so... I'd say this 'Enhanced' version is really lazy. So overall? Despite its low price, I think the Jim Power release on Steam is still not worth it. Instead of buying 6 games for the price of 5$ - including a brand new game, even! - you're greeted with three almost half-assed ports of existing games... which to be honest are better enjoyed on real hardware or emulators (due to functions like fast-forward and save states) If you still believe that this is a decent deal, then I still suggest you don't bug this release, solely because of poor communication between Piko Interactive and the users, and the apparent lies about the final product.

Holy crap, I had no idea this release existed. Sucks that Piko perpetrated such a terrible version with shady unfulfilled promises and inept/broken configurations, but it might be worth it to buy on sale at some point just to extract the enhanced version of the rom and run in a better emulator.
For what it's worth, the Steam version includes a SNES ROM that fixes the parallax scrolling, gives you 3 deaths per life, and includes some intro graphics per stage. If you have a flash cart, you can pull it off and play it on a real Super Nintendo too!

The timer at the top of the screen puts me off, countdowns ruin games, including 2D Mario - let us explore!
@duffman18
5 жыл бұрын
I never understood the timer in Sonic games. Because those levels all encouraged you to stop and platform and explore and you were rewarded with rings and shields and special zones where you could get chaos emeralds and eventually super sonic. So why make some levels so long that you can't explore them and still best it within 10 mins!? I regularly got a Time Over in Launch Base Zone. It's bloody huge for a level, all the more reason you should be allowed to explore it.
@duffman18
5 жыл бұрын
Also it just occurred to me right now. Playing sonic these days I get time overs far less often, if ever. I'm playing the NTSC 60 FPS versions now, but as a kid in the UK I played the slowed down 50 FPS versions, which because the timer still counted at the same speed, in effect I had way less time in every level than if I was American and had the faster version. So no bloody wonder I ran out of time. Those games were horribly optimised for PAL regions already, so of course they didn't give a shit about how we Europeans effectively had harder and slower sonic games. Ugh.
@zachreddy
5 жыл бұрын
duffman18 that’s fascinating and maddening. I had no idea the timers still counted down the at the same rate on 50hz - I assumed they would run slower same as everything else. Is Sonic the only game that had that problem?
Anyone know if theres a hack to fix the scrolling?
I don't get motion sickness that easily, but the gameplay shown in the video is rather unpleasant on the eyes. I will say, the computer versions of the game look and sound better, particularly the Amiga version. Though one French reviewer from a long time ago once said that only the Atari ST version is worth it for reasons I forget, other than nerd power I guess, which is technically already present in the Amiga version. The NES homebrew version looks surprisingly good though, and it even adds a new final boss to make up for the underwhelming one in the original game. The SNES version while adding more to the game, isn't worth it for its nauseating parallax scrolling and what not. At least Piko were generous enough to include 6 different versions of the game, including the previously mentioned NES version. Though the same can't be said on Evercade, since there isn't a computer based Piko collection, at least for now.
I know this is WAY late, but there is a patch that fixes the counter-scrolling parallax, making it a MUCH more playable game. If only there was a patch that addressed the visual priority between the playfield and the background... Also, the game now costs $20 instead of $5 for some reason!

That just made me really dizzy almost the same feeling like being spun in a chair! Whats with the background, you run right and the background scroll the same way towards the right just much faster. Its like the background is trying to run away from you. I wonder what it would have looked like if it scroll the other way? I give the developer credit on trying something new but I see why this never caught on.
I have this game. So hard
shout out to TheWiiGuy!
Nice game, with nice graphics and stupidly difficult levels. I have a copy, btw... Anyways, I was wondering if maybe someone ever thought of making a Hack that would fix the weird 3d effect... I mean, come on! It looks like the guy is inside a barrel or a cylinder of some sort... if it got "fixed", it would definitely be more worthy of playing...
Just watching you play this made me feel nauseous, and that's not a problem I have playing fully 3D games even. Oof.
Okay cool, they wanted a 3D effect, fine - but why is the scrolling moving in the wrong direction?
The visuals don't bother me, but hot damn. I can't even make it past the first level.
