Revisiting Metal Warriors - SNESdrunk

I didn't want Metal Jesus' team of powerful high-priced lawyers after me so I'll have to use the word "hidden gem" in the description instead of the script. If any game fits the description of hidden gem, it's Metal Warriors.

This was one of our favorite rentals from our local Blockbuster. Back when my dad passed a decade ago I bit the bullet and purchased a copy for myself since going to the video store with him is a core memory for me.

I used to rent it from Blockbuster too. I had read about it in a Nintendo Power issue, and luckily they had it for rental and got it a number of times. Paid a good amount for my own copy years later as well, but it's a favorite.

Yup, rented this every chance I could!
Those pixel-art cutscenes were just pure LucasArts. I remember renting this as a kid and being blown away by the opening, with the cockpit startup sequence.

You know SNESdrunk loves a game when the biggest complaint he has is over the sound your main weapon makes LOL!

I'd have to agree as well. I too prefer Metal Warriors, but Cybernator had the punchier sounds.
Metal warriors was one of my favorite games as a child. I played VS mode with my cousins so much.
I didn't even hear of this game until I started playing SNES games "any way you can" but it definitely felt like some hidden gem.
I love watching this… it feels so nostalgic! My mother used to play this with me to stop me from eavesdropping on my neighbor screaming in agony when he would have diarrhea attacks.. my heart goes out to him, bless him

Now that's a story.
You wondered where this game was when it came out? My friends and I had it on permanent rental. We ended up each buying a copy we loved it so much. Easily one of my favorite games of the SNES era.
I was blessed as a kid to live close to a very well-stocked and maintained, independent, local video store. They had a giant selection of games and this one was rented many times. I remember playing it with the lads on weekends, especially the VS. mode.
Total length of video: 390 secs. Total length of "SNES Drunk": 2 secs. .51% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
Soundtrack is amazing. The intro visuals are as well.
One of my favorite childhood games.

Incredible game. Legit one of my favorite snes games
I fucking love this game! I asked for this game for my birthday and was so happy to get it!
I am truly astounded by this game that isn't on the store.
This game is a Masterpiece.
I had so much fun renting this with friends. My favorite thing to do in VS was to jump out of my mech right after I beat them and sing a stupid song while I made my little guy fly up into the sky XD
My brother and I rented this as soon as we saw it was from Lucas Arts just for the love of all the games we played on PC from them. Was an instant classic for us.
How did this game not get more attention? Seriously, how awesome is this?

I found this on ZSNES when I was in high school and loved it. I never saw this anywhere, and I was in Blockbuster or Babbage's or EB Games at least once a month lol. Cutscenes were pretty sweet, too.
This channel is just amazing! love the videos, man. Got me really snesdrunk.
I love the soundtrack. Usually I listen to it during work. It fits almost perfectly.
Metal Warriors is a great game, I played it a lot growing up. One thing though you forgot mention is how it is a pretty tough game diffculty wise. Metal Warriors definitely is what people would call a hidden gem these days since a lot people don't know about it and it has never been released on any newer platforms.
@DVeritas

Agree, it is a hidden gem of the SNES era.
This is one of my biggest gripes with the transition from SNES to Playstation era. 2D was abandoned for 3D, which was still in its experimental phase. And so we never got games like Metal Warrior. Or normal games with arcade level graphics. But I recently played Metal Warrior emulated and the intro made me think this was a Japanese exclusive game. But now hearing it's American and produced by LucasArts makes me appreciate it even more.
Those cut scenes are frigging incredible.
Your Arrested Development reference tells me that you are indeed ready 😂
CYBERNATOR, MECH WARRIORS and U.N. SQUADRON 3 of my fav best SNES games.
This is so weird, last Saturday morning, so five days ago, I was going through some of the snes folders on my xbox looking for a new game, and I literally tried this, and really enjoyed it, and then just a few days later you post a video on it!
Great game, though I find Cybernator/Valken to be a tighter experience overall. Also that one mission where you have to protect the battleship is damn freaking hard!
This was my favorite game when I was a kid. Would love to see M2 do a port/remaster.
I was really looking forward to this revisited review, Metal Warriors was one of the first game I played where the story unfolds in Chile. Such fun memories, thanks SDrunk 👍🏼
Loved how you could test play each mech in the options, very cool stuff.
For some reason this game has always stuck in my mind, it was a rental I got once or twice from the local video store. Very unique game. I never got very far but it’s a blast to see it covered here. Thanks for cheering me up!!!
I spent a few hundred hrs with my friends playing this back in the day; i remember that during the summer when we got this game and were playing it in versus non-stop? That we literally had to cool the SNES down in the freezer for 15 minutes cause it'd lock-up completely by overheating after a few hours. Ah the memories. The strategies you could employ in versus mode could get quite deep once you got to grips with every mech's ups & downs and the versus map layouts.
Easiest way to ruin friendships as a kid: play head to head, pick Drache and constantly try to squish whoever you were facing off against.
@Archedgar
10 ай бұрын
Yeah Drache was OP as fk but in the story it was said to be a devastating new enemy proto-type so at least the power was lore accurate in 1v1.
I still own the cartridge to this day... don't have an SNES to play it, but I'm keeping the cartridge forever. Me and my buddy poured tons of hours playing head to head.
as always mate, thank you so much for these reviews its helps me so much with what's worth getting for the collection, and always learning something new. Keep up the good work!
3:15 Woah.. I got goosebumps hearing the music at this part. I very vividly remember this screen when you're mech is launching out of the ship and into the fight. Memorable cinematic/music combination for me.
Me and my buddies used to play the death match nonstop. The screen cheating was rampant. Thanks for covering this.
Loved this game as a kid, the 1 vs 1 was amazing. Had so much fun with friends playing it.
One of the best on SNES. stunning sound effect. exciting battle which tests your skill. Unique robots.
Glad u covered this. I keep meaning to play this one
I love Metal Warriors! Our Blockbuster had this game and we re-rented it all the time.
My local movie rental store (Mega Hits) had this for sale for $15 back in the late 90s. Never played it before I bought it. Turned out to be a excellent game that me and my friend played for hours.
This is second game I never knew about so now this along with Cybernator are two new games for me to play! Thanks Drunk!
I feel like we're already friends and you can come over to my house and play SNES anytime.
I rented this game multiple times purely to play the Vs mode with friends. Eventually, when my local video store closed down I purchased that same copy which included the box + manual shrink wrapped in perfect condition for just $10. Still the crown jewel of my SNES collection, but I could never part with it. So many good memories.
I’m glad someone besides me still says “Baby, you’ve got a stew goin’!”
I only ever saw this game at the local video rental shop, and it was AMAZING! The single-player campaign was BRUTALLY unforgiving, but I'd say the best part was when you and your friend had a sleepover and beat the CRAP outta each other in the 2-player mode (which was exclusively split-screen vs. with the UI showing the general direction of your opponent at all times).
This game is sometimes referred to as Assault Suits Gideon (due to it's similarities to Cybernator), and this was released before Front Mission Series Gun Hazard, since the pilot jack out mechanic from this game was later implemented there.
@sunderark

That's kind of a false rumor.
It's like "Cybernator" meets "Blaster Master," in regards to being able to get out of your mech and explore around as a little human sprite with a rifle of some kind.
What a classic. I am from Peru (S. America), my older cousin have me the game in 1999 and wish I still had the cartridge.
Seeing that magazine ad and the Cybernator game cover art next to each other would most definitely NOT help with the confusion about it being a sequel... That being said, I freaking love this game. The head to head mode was amazing, and I didn´t even know about the basketball mode until your videos. Cheers!
I love this game! The final boss killed me after ejecting from his mech. It was shocking but so much fun! I beat one boss by just going around it.
Loved the Arrested Development reference.
My cousin still has his copy of the game. We played it for hours as kids, great times!!!
Armored Core for the PS2, the mech warriors in that game can be equipped with an energy laser/sword type weapon in the left hand if you have arms equipped to hold a weapon.
one absolute gem, this and Zombies ate my Neighbors were Lucas Arts for me, Mike Ebert really pushed the SNES to its limits

@@danbauer3669 yeah, most of the people just remembers the adventure games, I was more into the action and if it was also co-op then it was perfect
Our rental place had this so every gamer in school knew of it and talked about it. We loved the multiplayer.
A favorite of my brother and I, we played that versus mode so much and also the main campaign trying to beat it. Unfortunately it was a rental, so we nvr had the time to mastered it. Still, lots of fun.
Rented this thing as a kid all the time for the multiplayer mode and played the crap out of it on emulator for years. A top favorite and a very underrated game indeed. Still fun today.
Love your videos man. Gonna give this game a go today. I'm sure I've already played it for a few minutes before, but I had no idea it had all this hidden content like the basketball mode lol Reminds me a bit of Tekken 3 which had stuff like the volleyball mode which was always a lot of fun
This was always one of my top favorite SNES games and nobody knew it existed. Multiplayer is a BLAST!
Yo thanks for the recent Zelda Minish review. I didn't even realize it existed and started playing it and love it.
Another obscure gem that on the SNES, and Metal Warriors looks awesome. Definitely worth the recognition.
I used to play this a lot a young teen. The multiplayer mode got very popular in my neighborhood
I rented this one as a kid. I mainly remember playing the 2 player mode with friends
Good review! Yeah, I always assumed this was the sequel to Cybernator due to some of the similarities so it is interesting to find out it isn't. The good news is there are currently patches for this game that add a save feature and infinite continues to add some quality of life features.
Don't think mentioned the coolest and most terrifying aspect of the game, when you get out of your mech and a random soldier in the area runs over, hops in your mech and starts trying to kill you.
I’m sure I’m like the 14th person… but I’d love to see a review of Ranger X on the genesis! I’ll check your backlog after I send this like a dunce and you probably already did it lol!! Great stuff man thanks for your constant uploads
Used to play versus with my friend for hours on our rented copy. Definitely a don't miss game!
nice animation...the mech is smooth as silk. playing as a tiny human looks fun
@benjamindeh873

The most fun part of it is when you escape your mech before it blows up, and manage to find/steal another one in the nick of time.
I remembered renting it at a video show. I never saw it for sell anywhere. But it blown my mind. That was the start time I saw cut scenes like that on the SNES. I thought only Sega Saturn, PlayStation, arcade, or PC was able to have something of that quality. I had to make sure a wire wasn't unplug. At first I thought it was a movie on the sci-fi channel anime block (Saturday mornings).
I absolutely adored this game growing up. the VS mode was so fun with friends. One game I hope you give a try, is Metal Combat with the super scope 6. The VS Mode vs a friend is an absolute blast. Also the second play through on medium or hard is where the challenge is at.
It was my favorite NES game, or at least tied with Mario Kart 😂 You did a great job of bringing me back to remember why. But it was actually the multiplayer mode that I really loved and played the most.
This was one of my favorite SNES games. The two-player mode was especially fun.
I'll say it again, this game was incredible, and way ahead of it's time. Metal Warriors would be a great re-release side scroller for the Nintendo Switch.
Those cut scenes were perfect in this game
huh.. I found this game by renting it. I rented it many times and finally picked it up at some point later. Didn't realize it was so rare. My friends and I absolutely loved this game. The single player was quite hard, especially later levels, but we spent a lot of time in multiplayer. This ended up being one of my absolute favorite SNES games. In all that time though, I had NO IDEA about the creepy basketball mode!
One of the earliest games I remember emulating on a PC in the late 90s and had checked out games shown in UK magazines that hadn't come out in UK. Not all the SNES effects were emulated yet but I was fascinated with the animations, the different mechs and we had fun in that 2 player battle mode. :)
I didn't know this was rare! My brother and I played the hell out of this as kids, rented it almost every week.
Excellent review!
I loved this game! I remember renting it and played it all night long, such a great time.
My friend and I used to use a card table pushed up against his TV right at the split point in vs mode. One of use would sit under the table seeing only the bottom screen and the other would sit to the side and only see the tip screen. It was the only way to really use the strengths of each mech. Like...for instance the spider can turn invisible...but if you can see both screens it's a very useless ability. Also using the rolling attack of the roving turret robot was a lot of fun to surprise someone with from the top of an elevator shaft.
This looks like an amazing game. Shame it hasn't been released anywhere else.
I had Metal Warriors as a kid, played it with my mom all the time. We loved the multiplayer. Ball OP
I can't help but thinking about that Continue? episode where they were playing this game, while saying something smoke space weed, and vote against Space Mitt Romney III. lol
I played this game so much in the 90'! Simply amazing!
I remember this game quite vividly when I was a kid. I absolutely loved it and I remember that the Spider-mech could turn invisible which sounds cool but since the player could see your screen on the other end it didn't work good but my dad let me think I won
I got this from a rental store that was going out of business so it was pretty cheap. not only was it fun, but I sold the cart for like 300 bucks years later because turns out it's INSANELY rare, and then I sold the manual for 80 bucks because that thing's even rarer lol
@the_gamer_wayne
10 ай бұрын
I just paid over $300 for this manual haha. It’s tough to find.
I was fortunate enough to "borrow this from my 13 year old neighbor when I was 6. It absolutely blew my mind and to this day I fondly want a copy and will have to try to get it one day. I was sad when I had to RETURN it to my neighbor. He didn't even want it back and I think ended up selling it or trading it away anyway. 2 player search and destroy mode was my favorite part and when I wasn't playing it with friends I put it on 2 player mode just to play/win at it over and over. Good times. Thanks for this review.👍
Some of my best snes memories are with this game. No one else ever seems to know about it
The cut scenes are clearly based in Gundam (Gundam 0083), the officers and pilots have the Federation uniforms and suits, also you can see a Space Colony, the mothership looks like a Federation cruiser mixed with a Zeon shuttle.
3:55 SNESdrunk forgot the best mission of all; Destroy giant robo-slugs that are burrowing into a city. I don't remember what the in-game explanation for it was but it looked very cool and was my favorite mission of all.
Excellent Arrested Development reference 😂
Dude you’re awesome! I have all these games on my snes mini but I’m so intimidated to play them because I know they’re going to be hard lol
It's like an updated blaster master
My brother and I played the absolute shit out of this as kids. Was easily one of my favourite VS. mode games on the SNES.
You must do Front Mission: Gun Hazard next :) - Great video!
One of my favs that I found purely through it's awesome soundtrack during lockdown. Solid gameplay, awesome spritework, music and just an overall fun and fulfilling experience. I read an interview with someone from LucasArts that worked on the game said they wanted to make their own after playing Cybernator combined with the love of classic mecha anime.
For some reason, it was really easy to find in my city. Owned it, played a lot, but was never able to finish it - only years later, through emulation and save states. Also, head to head was awesome
Keep the mech action going with a review of Front Mission Gun Hazard. Love that game.
