Jim Power The Lost Dimension - Real Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) Gameplay
Ойындар
Game was originally developed and published by Loriciel SA in 1993 for Super Nintendo and MS-DOS PCs. Only in 2014, the never published. Due to the death of the original programmer Fernando Velez in 2016 (may he rest in peace), it took until 2019 to sort out IP rights and finally do a Kickstarter campaign to release the game.
With my first recording, I managed to get into the final stage VII on "easy" difficulty. But boy, this game is hard..!! And sometimes the stage design is "design from hell", unfair at times. But what is still motivating to oversee these game design glitches is that the game's audiovisual design is pure delight. It features gorgeous graphics not often seen in this colorfulness on the Mega Drive / Genesis, and a great soundtrack by maestro Chris Hülsbeck.
Recording Equipment:
- Japanese Mega Drive Model 1 HAA-2510 with RGB out
- Framemeister xRGB-mini (HDMI out 720p60 w/ scanlines active)
- AVerMedia Live Gamer Mini GC311
recorded with 1280x720@59.94fps (H.264)

The music quality is amazing!
Finally we can play the final build of this unreleased port. Looks and sound great. Chris Hulsbeck killed as aways. Thanks piko for this!

Having grew up with the original SNES version, seeing this is still really cool and unique
It is funny how this game can be tough but also fun at the same time. I've seen too many people complaining about the "weird paralax scrolling" or how this game is just to be avoided. I bought the digital version that includes a nice NES style version and when the games are finished will allow me to play the Atari Amiga version as well. This is an underrated gem in my opinion.
I love how the background just scrolls in the wrong direction

Actually in the new SNES release they fixed this as a bug 🤣 and I would tend to agree, I find it quite irritating especially in the shooter stages.

The parallax trickery is done for creating an illusory 3D effect which comes as a result of the Pulfrich effect, and only works if you are playing the game with one of those Nuoptix 3D glasses like the ones which came bundled with the 1993 SNES and PC releases. I suppose the planned but cancelled Mega Drive 1993 release was algo going to be shipped with a pair of those. Neither of these Piko releases seems to include them though, so you have to get one from somewhere else. You can also have the same visual effect if you use sunglasses with the right shade removed.

The wrong scrolling was made on purpose for the Pulfrich 3D effect, you just need a sunglasses to cover only one of your eye to get the effect the other can be naked, it trick your brain and fake the depth by scrolling mouvement, plenty of TV show and cartoon use this trick as a gimmick, but it's not as good as real polarised filter.
15:25 I love the music in this part. It has that vibe of Gradius and other Konami titles.
Such an underrated game back in the days : it was as hard and as beautiful as Ghouls’n Ghost with various platform and shooting stages. An amazing game.

I'm noticing that sometimes after you get hit you go invincible. Does this version have a health system?
@CarpeLudumGGS

Yes, I think you have 1 (hidden/invisible) health point, you don't die instantly. That makes the game a bit easier, but still it's quite a hard game imho.

Looks good. Love the parallax scrolling. How do the controls feel? Does the game play well?
@CarpeLudumGGS

The reverse parallax scrolling can be quite irritating, especially in the shooter stages. Controls are very slick, but collision detection is a bit too strict for my taste, leading to much of the high difficulty level / unfairness at times.
@WeskerSega

In my case, as of yet I could only beat it on easy because of the high difficulty, which is especially noticeable in the shoot 'em up stages and also in the final stage with all those wacky platforming sections. Also, the game difficulty setting defaults not only the continues you have, but also the life hits: you have three life hits on easy, two on normal and one on hard. So this complicates things even further. I don't know if there's any variation on the ending depending on the difficulty. There is on the revised SNES version by Piko, featuring a new ending not present in the original 1993 release which appears only on hard difficulty. Speaking about the SNES version, similary to what happens with Mega Turrican and Super Turrican, I think the soundtrack sounds better in this Mega Drive version. Chris Hülsbeck did it again.

The backwards scrolling makes for a "spinning" illusion ive only seen it in a few games.
That looks like and awesome shooter/platformer hybrid, and the music is great! Pretty sure i would have loved this as a kid.

The scale of the graphics and colors on-screen are far above the average Genesis game this is shocking only Thunderforce 4 is this crazy
Very great game with Atari ST version, OST is very good this version Genesis, great job :) Nice run and gun :)
Funny how Level 1's music sounds eerily similar to the Lava Zone music from Y's 3 Oath in Felghana. Considering how awesome that soundtrack was, that is a compliment to how good this is. Very cool that the Genny version of this game finally saw the light of day.

@@petercriscuola To my knowledge the game is still on active sale as a cartridge version only. Therefore: No legal way to a ROM file currently.
A lot of dithering, it seems like he has a low color palette, but it looks good.
I hate that European game design trope where everything has to be animated, all the time. Spikes are stabbing, coins are bouncing, even the parallax scrolling is entirely too enthusiastic. It's like watching a damn Fleisher cartoon from the 1930s.
@CarpeLudumGGS

No doubt about it, Jim Power definitely overstretches the limits of psychedelic parallax scrolling. 🤣
Never understood why the most distant parallax layers move opposite to the usual direction in this game. I assume that's what the title means by "in 3D'. Great looking spritework though

Nice try! Jim Power is hard af
If we're being honest here, the game wasn't that great on SNES. It pulled off a lot of technical feats but the gameplay itself was dull and repetitive.
Cenário de fundo é acelerado e no sentido contrário das leis da física. Muita psicodelia na cabeça
No Mode 7 stages and less parallax scrolling layers that the SNES version. SNES wins!!!
