I played the second one a lot as a little kid, but I could never beat any of the bosses because I couldn't figure out how to use magic. Had no idea until now that it was the select button, wow.

I, for one, would welcome a baseball game staring Ozzie Smith as long as every time he moves it's by using backflips.
Have the Washington Wizards ever played the Golden State Warriors? You know because Wizards & Warriors? Great video by the way. Great memories.
God, the animation frames on that hawk in II... I'm still so taken aback every time I see it. It's not like it pushed the limits of the NES or anything, you just rarely saw anything move that smoothly on this console.

Same. Part 3 still holds up for me. Even more than the first two actually. I did find you can soft lock yourself out of getting all 4 gems if you collect too many other items. Despite its flaws, I love this game!
I have to thank u snes drunk. As a kid my neighbor had this game. I never knew the name and couldn't figure it out until i saw this video. I've got a super console x pro and your videos really help me figure out what to play.
Never played any of these games with the exception of Ironsword, which my grandparents had. The best thing anybody in our family could say about it was that it was better than Deadly Towers, which they also had. Come to think of it: they also had Top Gun, Castlevania 2, and Milon's Secret Castle, which are games that have a bit of notoriety for being on AVGN.
The ironsword W&W 2 title theme music, first stage, and the music in the store minigame are always in my memory...
My personal fav is W&W 3. A friend of mine - whose native language is not English - got to the end and picked the wrong option when he was a kid, because he didn't know enough to understand what should be done. The bad ending screen shall haunt him forever, hahah. I kinda like W&W 1 as well, but absolutely hated W&W 2.
Love your videos man, perfect balance of humour alongside succinct and concise relevant info, great work :)
The NES ones: all of them. Three utterly underrated games. I've never played Fortress of Fear, so I can't speak for that one, but all three W&W games on the NES are underrated gems in the system's library.

It took me years to figure out the first game as a kid.
Wizards and Warriors looks great for an early NES game. I was always impressed by the animation of the birds in the second one. I suspect they may have used rotoscoping for them.

No. Actually, the artist named John Pickford has a blog about his game development from way back with his old files and concept art. He had a book called "Animals in motion" which he used for reference. zee-3.com/pickfordbros/archive/view.php?post=72 here is the link to it :)
Wow, seeing the first W&W instantly took me back to when I was a kid. I had completely forgotten about these games. Great review.
Best intro music on the NES w&w for life.
The original game was great. Had it as a kid. That opening theme always got me ready for a quest like that.
4:30 The whole concept of this guy just lifting you up and throwing you out made me laugh pretty hard. Most games would just warp you out of the shop, but I love that they went through the effort of showing you get kicked out.
Great video, just picked up W&W2 the other day!

Absolutely loved this game!! Brings back fond memories. One of the first NES games I rented.
I was searching for years for the title ! Thank you SNES drunk !!!!!!!!
I really like watching these while I do chores around my house, I get learned and stay productive
One of my all time favorites I played the hell outta this game as a kid. I love the music and I got so pumped opening new chests never knew what I’d find
The original “Wizards & Warriors” game was one of the four games I got with my original NES back in Christmas of 1988. (The other three were “Super Mario Bros.”, “Legend of Zelda”, & “Top Gun”). To this day I still have fond memories of the original “Wizards & Warriors” and it was one of the first games I knew the position of every item and secret.
again you mention Faxanadu. why not do a video?
Wizards & Warriors 1 was the very first NES I ever played!! To this day my love for this game and the franchise will never die, I remember being completely blown away by the 1st W&W game back in 1988!! The game and it's soundtrack (especially near death!!) still haunt me to this day!! I wish some would pick up the franchise or do a fan remake/continuation of Kuros and his exploits?! He deserves it that much as we'll never know what happened to him via the 3rd final game. So I sit here still waiting for the franchise to come back but it probably never ever will and that's a great injustice!!!
Everytime I see the Ironsword cover I expect Fabio to say, “I can’t believe it’s not butter”.
I love this channel!
The three NES wizards and warriors games are some of my most played games of my child hood. I love all three regardless of their flaws. Nostalgia is a powerful thing haha
Great video!
I only first discovered this series maybe 5 years ago through the first one of the series. Man was I surprised. Its damn fun. I love how much jumping is in it personally. A true nes platformer.
My main memory of Wizards and Warriors was the Nintendo World of Power novelisation I read when I was a kid. A short but memorable story about a kid being pulled into a magical world to become Kuros' squire on his quest (which was also the same basic plot as the Simon's Quest novelisation). I never played the original, only II and III, and didn't play them very much (it was WAY after the NES died that I finally picked them up).
When I was a little-little kid, like 4 or 5, I used to watch this VHS tape my family somehow acquired that was all tips, tricks, and walkthroughs for various games. I don’t even think we OWNED a single title on the entire VHS, so I’ve no idea why we had it lol. W&W1 was among those games. The walkthrough was this needlessly complex mishmash of various potions and axes and robed figures and keys. I remember a lot of bats and things turning pink, and boots and just the most random shit lol. I hadn’t seen this game in any form since I was probably like 8. So this was a nostalgia trip for sure. That VHS has some fantastic titles. How to refuel and land in Top Gun. Hints for Metal Gear. Pretty sure there was some Megaman 2 in there... I remember some really crazy 80s style screen transitions, like the screen turning into a ball and bouncing around the screen. Pretty sure they used Megaman 2 boss select music in between each chapter... I think it had a commercial for Duncan yo-yos at the beginning 🤔 Man, there’s a BUNCH of memories locked away in there lol. I know that the VHS was not a one-off, and the one we had was like, volume 3 or something. I really wish I knew what it was called, but all I remember was a gold label (maybe?) and the music and voiceover guy, and I’m pretty sure I watched that tape until the VCR ate it 🤷🏻♂️ Ah well. Someone out there likely knows what I’m talking about. Wonder if I can find it on KZread 🤔🤔🤔

Wow, I’d forgotten about Wizards and Warriors! Huge nostalgia trip. Gotta play it again now!
god i love the music of the first game especially when your hp is low, memories
Seeing enemies menacingly charging at you just to die at the tip of your sword is hilarious
the first one is my favorite by far, and i think it's still worth playing!
@7:35 : Townspeople/dogs will not attack you if you are a thief, things in the underworld will not attack you if you are a wizard, and most things in the castle will not attack you if you are a knight (the starting "knight" doesn't count). Only the crossbowmen in the castle and bosses actually attack you if you have the right clothes on. Also, try ducking and attacking -- you only have to tap the button for a quick stab while crouching. It works way better and has better reach than your standard attack.
3:24 the wing flapping animation on the bird is really nice for the nes
I loved these games as a kid. I also had the novels from the Worlds of Nintendo series, Wizards and Warriors, Blaster Master, and Metal Gear. They werent the best books but they made me replay the games more. And the Gameboy version was actually one of the first GB games i ever beat.
My EVIL meter is always full! I'm the one who banished Ozzie Smith into the Mystery Spot on the Simpsons!
Beating Iron Sword once when I was a kid is one of my proudest gaming achievements
Picked up the first one over a month ago and beat it for the first time ever. Need to play the other two
Good morning, SNESdrunk
3:13 "Heart! Gooo Planet!!" The power is yours!!
Hell yeah, they're worth playing today, tmro, and 10yrs from now.
That attack bullshit was the reason why I sold IronSword immediately after buying it. While The Fortress of Fear is a completely different story. I remember buying this game seven fucking years ago and no, I still haven't beaten it. But I don't think this game is bad.
@UltimateCarl

Heh, I'm with you. It's so hard to hit enemies and even aside from that, it just looks dopey. Your character looks like an idiot clumsily flailing about like it's the first time they've ever swung a sword and barely have the muscles to lift it.
Ww3 is by far the most fun of the series. Theres actual stuff to do n puzzles to solve, trophey trials, class changes...its amazing all over. Theres no need to fight most enemies. If youre the proper class they dont attack you anyway. Its a treasure hunt, not hack n slash.
With the benefit of hindsight, I can say that this game feels like if you made Doodle Jump with D&D elements. The hop-hop-hopping upwards, seemingly on things that should not allow for standing, just reminds me of the chaotic nature of the platforms in DJ
The main theme for the first Wizards and Warriors theme will be playing in my head even after every memory I have is gone. It’s that ingrained in my mind. That last boss that keeps getting a new form had me beat as a kid. I could ALMOST kill it but never did. Finally completed it as an adult. *fist pump*
I had the second one when I was younger...it always interested me. I never figured out how to get past level 1 though.
I remember playing Iron Sword when it came out. That main character looked like John Arbuckle from Garfield to me.
God! I used to have this on the gameboy! never managed to get past the first level because the gameplay was so spastic and rubbery. The music was so hyper and tense too that it would put you off from playing. Neverthless, a good game for its time despite for its quirks.
I can't believe you picked the first two over the third. The third was so good - open-world with RPG elements while still maintaining the platforming of its predecessors. I don't think you gave this one enough thought - the third is objectively better than the previous two.
Something about a guy in full steel armor having this kind of jumping animation always cracked me up.
The eagle animations on 2 are super rad!
One of my fave games, and one I never beat as a youth 😂 there was a fun element of exploration like “what’s behind this rock or what is up in that corner.” I feel like Shovel Knight was inspired 100% by these games.
Loved this game.
One of my favorites as a kid still own it.
Oh dude, I played this one as a kid, but I misremembered the name as Ghouls and Ghost, haha. Thanks!
I always loved this game, even though the platforming is a bit floaty and slippery
These are good vids
This game may have been my first "retro" game purchase back in like '99. I already had Iron Sword for years by then.
Great video. One little thing, though. In the third game, there's another way to attack. You hit down and B and you attack way faster than if you hold B and hit a direction. I feel like most people do down and B and ignore the other attack system.
nice! I am a big fan of the second one, there is some neat tricks you can use to keep the magic attack from one level into the next, by firing it at the piece of ironsword after defeating a boss. I agree the first 2 are much better than the third game
Ironsword has oodles of atmosphere, I love it! W&W1 was mostly made by Tim Stamper who is a co founder of Rare and like said, they contracted the Pickford brothers for W&W2 and 3. They have a very interesting blog about developing these games with concept art. I can't find the source, but apparantly their development on W&W3 got cut short and they couldn't put in everything they wanted.
The second NES game was one of my first games. Perhaps my Grandma got it for me so she could look at the cover? I really enjoyed this as a child: it seemed very mysterious. Going to into the clouds to meet an Eagle, the whole thing was very different.
I still have PTSD from 2. It was more than my young brain could handle at the time. I wanted to love the game, but it always kicked my butt. Just seeing some of these clips gave me flashbacks.
2 is one of my all time favorites
Favourite nes game of all time!
One of my fave nes games. My brother and I loved this and faxanadu.
Loved W&W and Ironsword, I always felt I missed out not getting W&W3, from the looks of things here, I would have enjoyed.

It would have been the best one if it had unlimited continues. Still pretty good time though.
I had 3 as a kid, and lovde it. It in many whay was my first metrovania experience. Never bet the final boss thou.
Zippo games btw was the Pickford brothers' company, who eventually went to Software Creations and made Plok!
I love this game brings me to my childhood
Used to love 2. Great game
AWESOME!
Love the first Wizards and Warriors. My bro and I bought it for my 3 other bros for Christmas waaaaaay back in '87. :) If it weren't for unlimited continues from where you died, this game would be NES Tough. I purchased Wizard and Warriors 2 about a year ago and it seems more difficult so I quickly gave up. I also didn't realize that it has a password system so I may give it another shot.
The first one was one of my favorite games. I was always happy playing it, and always happy thinking back on it. Same with Chrystalis and Faxanadu. I remember liking the control of W&W 2, but I couldn't get into it. 3 seemed obtuse by comparison and I only played it once.
soon as i saw the sequil game in this vid, right away im just "THATS THE GAME I USED TO HAVE AND COULDNT REMEMBER THE TITLE" boy i played that game alot as a kidand remember being stuck on the 3rd level
I easily beat the first one. Had some trouble with the third one, but was never, EVER able to complete the second one. Ironsword's last boss gauntlet was just too much for me. I'm thinking of trying it again now that I'm older but memories of getting wiped out by the elements and/or Malkil tell me I should stay away. Anyway thanks for the vid, SNESdrunk. Always a good time.
Wizards & Warriors is AWESOME.
Huge levels was Ultimate Play The Game's thing. All their games were massive like that. Oh yeah, 1987 ... UPTG had changed their name to RARE that year, and had already released Slalom on the NES by the time W&W dropped. This game is a great example of how the UK (and most of Europe, in fact) didn't embrace consoles so much in the 80s, and that most of us over here played games on home computers instead. W&W took 3 years to get an EU release, and like most NES and Master System titles, it didn't do well in Europe.
The original is one of the first NES game I played and I like it the most. I also played IronSword back in the day. I appreciate it more now than I did back then. I haven't put much time in part 3. Nothing having at least a password system is a major flaw (IronSword had passwords so it went downhill in that regard). Haven't played the Game Boy game but I've never heard anything positive about it.
I could never beat wizards and warriors as a kid but as an adult I've beaten the first 2 games. Both of them bring back good memories, especially the original.
The first one somehow looked the best!
Feel like Wizards and Warriors was the Dark Souls of the NES era. Difficult as hell too.

I have also usually compared the two games to each other :D it was my childhood's Dark Souls. Played all 3 Wizard & Warriors (not the X one, but the numbered one). And when Dark Souls games came out, I bought all of them with all of the DLCs and I played through all of them :D They're very cool games. I have also visited the temple in Italy, which inspired the Dark Souls, and I became a game developer later.

Wizards and Warriors was easy as shit. What crack are you smoking? Iron Sword was quite a bit harder.
Ozzie Smith's Wizards and Warriors: Medieval Baseball. Only the 80s could have produced such a cross-genre named promotion like this.
