Tiny is very comfortable with Barry grooming him. So relaxed that he kept falling in a deep sleep.

I just love Taggy! I think truly Taggy and Grandee not only do they make the cutest babies, they ha e the biggest hearts

Barry appears to have mellowed. Of course we only get tiny snippets of their lives. This could be the norm. It also shows how calm and gentle you are Dr. M. for them to tolerate your presence without any anxiety. What a lovely experience it must be to witness their ADL. ♡

Wow! Didn't know that Barry could be as loving as his brother Brody. All Bossy's children seem to yearn for their own children. Who knew Taggy could be as loving also.

it is wonderful to see the love and joy of life of these beautiful wild animals, in contrast to the thousands of maltreated chilled and supposedly made happy by stupid and mean people, how long do people need to be made aware that these animals are happy only in the wild, seemingly simple and difficult for understanding for some, thanks for the beautiful videos

I think Barry is experiencing a longing to have a kid of his own, as he witnessed how Grandee and Taggy care for their daughters. He is just like his sisters, Bolly and Dy, they're all spayed ☹️

Yeah. I'm so glad the video was done in a way that it was easy to see that. I never would have come to know any of these monkeys so well without great observations from Arroz. It's so much more interesting when we pick up on things we hadn't before.

I agree with you . It would be hard to miss Grandee's example of attentiveness to the young. And you often see many of the females still following Grandee or sitting nearby to him.

Can't tell you how much I enjoy your videos Arroz. Thanks again. I love watching these slow-paced interactions that deepen my appreciation for the monkeys. One of these days I *will* find my way to Golden Hill to watch them in person. If ONLY I'd found these videos before I went to Hong kong on business 10 years ago!

I thought your LAST video was jut wonderful, but this one takes the cake! Barry has a softer side! And so so patient after all!

So sad for Taggy there will be no more another Dopey, the cutest monkey on earth.

The other monkey channels don't show fathers who are involved in their baby monkey's life. Some of those channels! I didn't enjoy watching. They always shown baby monkeys being abused by their mother or they are hungry for milk and being kidnapped by other monkeys. These channels seem to feed the mother and not the baby monkey. They also filmed abondon baby monkeys. The ex-owners put them back in an environment they are not familiar with and they are being abused by very aggressive monkeys and they enjoyed filming this poor baby getting beaten up and so scared. Some people are just cruel. I really enjoyed your channel, keep up the good work.

It's lovely to see males being gentle and kind to their little ones. I wonder if and how they know that they are their fathers. I admire King Grandee for his kindness to babies.

According to research they know who their fathers are even if they never met them before. Rhesus macaques use the same technique we do for face recognition. So they know who their relatives are. 🤓🏴‍☠️🇸🇪

Grandee's loving manner toward the young is probably being noticed by the other males. And I wonder if Barry didn't mate with Tracy when she was in heat a couple of years ago and thinks Tinky could be his kid. I believe you had said before that females may mate with more than one male. Barry of course is shooting blanks but he doesn't know that. I hope Grandee's example will live on through the males of this troop forever.🙂

You know Arroz, I wonder if hadn't observed Grandee being loving and caring and even playful with the kids. I think he wants the job of alpha, maybe he thinks being that way to kids, even kids that aren't related to you is part of what a good alpha does. There certainly have been MANY opportunities to observe Grandee playing with, or grooming or protecting kids that were or weren't related to him. I'd like to think that Grandee started something that becomes a "thing". Whoever ends up alpha, I hope they are good to the kids. I don't know if Barry has the other qualifications necessary but he's doing this for some reason. Hopefully he get's a good feeling by caring for the youngsters.

Normally I think that Barry is an entitled jerk. But this definitely sheds light on a loving and kind side. There's hope for Barry yet.😊❤

Well Arroz you outdid yourself with this video..all yours are fantastic but this one was so gentle and nice and hey.. who knew Barry had a soft side..but I have to disagree with you and say no male beats Grandee in the caring stakes..I've seen him follow one of his brood along the rd grooming them as they move..he isvan exceptional male and daddy..because he loves all babies not just his own..little Gigy at the start follows her daddy 3everywhere.. our gang are thriving even without an Alpha as both Grandee and Taggy have had their own batch of babies this yr..so that works ok..Taggy can be kind but doesn't have patience to continue long term..as for Barry ..well maybe he was overcome by our little Tinkys charms... he was such a scrawny lil guy.. born late and very small..he's done well to catch up.. he and Sylvy looks like our special boy Dopey..it is nice to see this side of Barry..maybe he has learnt from watching the best..our Grandee and has realised being nice gets you further..or just maybe he is growing up at last..lets hope this new Barry continues and the equilibrium of the troop stays calm and positive because Tinky was enjoying that so much. .but Grandee is still the King 👑👑🇬🇧💞✝️🙏🙈🙊🙉👍

@@charleshoward848 hello my friend..well I'm better than I was..I tested positive on boxing day so haven't been great..think it was the omicron one as had awful headaches massive hot and cold sweats..scratchy throat and my body was just so sore all over..even lying in bed was painful .but just have a few hot sweats now and its left me with an awful lethargy.. I'm getting at least 10 hours sleep like i did last night then I am falling asleep on the sofa like I did for 2 HOURS this evening..how are you doing? And did you have a good Christmas and new year?.. it all goes so quickly doesn't it..spent it in my own with my cats as there is a family disagreement between my 2 nephews and we normally go to one of them for dinner and I'm like Switzerland... neutral..so that would be picking sides..but that's just fine with me..too long in the tooth to fret about being on your own ..isn't it great to have Arroz and our gang back...missed them so much..🇬🇧💞✝️🙏🙈🙊🙉👑

@@charleshoward848 well i stay in my house mostly but helped with a cat rescue fundraiser the Sunday before Christmas but we all wore masks and used sanitiser..then took pressie 3mg nephew and hia children...so don't know where I got it from..but the tiredness is ridiculous ..i had 10 hours sleep then got up today after nearly 2 hours fell asleep on the sofa dor a couple of hours had my tea..then slept again .. its bloody ridiculous..i can't go òn likethus but nothing to be done..even after i wake up i could go straight back to sleep..thats not flu or a normal virus so I am thinking omicron..take care my friend..its the very devil to have and pain afterwards!!!..🇬🇧💞✝️🐠🙈🙊🙉

I’ve always thought that out of all Dopey’s siblings Dimpy resembles him the most and that face she was making when Taggy was holding her was a classic Dopey face!🤣 There’s not much cuter than watching the little ones grooming an adult.🥰 They look so serious and focused. ☺️ Oh, and that face that Sylvy made when Taggy wasn’t sure what to do with her and was grabbing her and nipping her ear, it looked so much like Dopey when he got busted by Bossy during his epic tantrum.🤣😂

As annoyed as I get for Barry still hanging around and running the place, this may soften my opinion of him. It is quite sweet 😊 Could he be one of Grande's offspring?

Maybe Barry has found Tinky to be more tolerant of his thorough grooming than his siblings. Good to see Barry humble himself somewhat considering his previous years. Hopefully he keeps it up!

Tinky has displayed good interpersonal relations with other older troop members in the past. When he was first born, there was another female who used to hang around Tracy and Tinky but I've forgotten who it was (one of Ridgy's daughters??). Then, when Tinky was maybe 6 or 9 months old or so, he went through a phase where he'd let Dy (if I remember correctly, think it was her) carry him around. It might've been when he was being weaned. Now Barry, Dy's brother. Tinky has sure made some powerful older friends! I would previously not have considered either Dy nor Barry as the friendliest, AT ALL, so either Tinky gives off some pheramones that melts even the toughest of hearts, or he LETS others nurture him and that's why he gets the attention. Who knows? Not me. My head is kind of spinning at how I have to completely re-think my opinion of Barry. I've never seen a remotely soft side on him, and must admit I thought he could be quite a bully at times. Gotta say I LOVE this new side of Barry we're seeing regardless of why.

Not sure what you guys were watching but that looked like a low grade seizure to me. He's named for that huge tracking (tagged) collar he use to have around his neck. Was he subjected to worker tests/treatments that are causing this condition?

@@spankieschmidt3834 no, you’re correct. The collars are generally for tracking data. I’ve seen this behavior before in macaques. It is pretty common but I’ve noticed it more in females. I’ll send a few links of others doing this. Still, Sylvia is adorable wondering what in the hell Daddy is gonna do to her. 😎

Could Tinky possibly be his son?

I definitely think Barry is a multidimensional character. I recall one from the AM archives where he was seen being a great big brother to Bessy. (She had injured her foot pretty badly). He was really comforting and hugging her- in their special way. I loved this episode- just like I love your older episodes. Thank you so much for recalling Barry's tenderness with Bessy and including the link (I just rewatched it!). I would've sworn it was Brody who was kind to her back when her foot was injured but you are correct, it was Barry. Bessy's foot looked just awful back then. At the end of the episode Arroz wrote a postscript saying she might be crippled for life. I'll have to check next time I see Bessy, but I don't think she even has a mild limp, does she? Either way, he was absolutely correct about their stellar immune system.

I don't believe I've ever seen Barry or Taggy being anything but impatient toward the babies and yearlings before. While Barry's tender grooming session went on for quite awhile, Taggy's session with Silvy seemed to turn a bit hinky after only a short spell. You could clearly see the fear grimace on Silvy's face when he started getting jerky with her. Even if the loss of his boy bits has somewhat mellowed him out, I don't think it will ever be in Taggy's nature to be as docile and loving as Grandee toward the little ones. Although, Barry thoroughly surprised me with his actions.

I believe Barry has groomed Tinky before. Tinky is so relaxed with him to the point of dosing off. Which brother helped take care of Bessie when she had that injured leg? Wasn't it Barry?

I think Tinky is just a very likable little boy. Lol

What is still a big unknown and has always mystified me when it come to many primate groups is if there is some way a father knows whether he sired a child or not. The thought used to be that there was no real way that a father could and that the alpha assumed all infants were his as he mated with all the female's in a troop but it's long since become obviously more complex than that. Depending on a troops social structure we have found family groups or sub troops within large troops where there is a mating between the matriarch of that family group and she has a preferred male and he sees the infants as his, while there are still some troops that pretty much eject most of the bachelor's out and while the female's may have chosen a male from a bachelor troop and she may know, everyone including the mother acts as if the alpha is the father. In some cases an alpha will be paternal towards many babies but not others making one wonder if he knows the female has been with others or can sense the child is not his. Then there are the cases where a change in the alpha spells disaster for any nursing babies as they are known to murder all infants. This is usually in cases of primates that ovulate and conceive at any time as long as they're not pregnant or nursing and usually refuse mating activities if pregnant or have an infant. Getting rid of the infants means the new alpha will guickly have mating partners. So it can be very complicated. We also have seen a new alpha leave all the infants alone and one wonders if he was already mating for sometime with the females to have the benefit of them on his side when he challenges and so he already believes the infants are his, and we have also seen a new alpha only do away with some but not all, so one assumes he was already mating with their mother. As to how attentive or not a primate might be as a father differs as much in the primate world as in the human. We have seen males even as juveniles very loving and caring towards babies while others could care less and rather go off and be climbing trees and mock fighting. Some are really nurturing and are there the minute a baby screams, as fast as a female would be while others act as if the small knees are a nuisance and some can be down right abusive and moms keep the baby far away. We have seen makes play and entertain a baby or even seen a mom leave a male, father or not, to baby sit. A lot of this interaction we often were not aware of as males tend to be more nurturing when settling down for the night rather than during the day when they are busy with other things. Even with the great ape primates like gorillas fathers come in all abilities from extremely doting to terribly uncaring or even abusive and some are like that with all children while other times it's seens to depending on the baby itself. Barry's attention to an unrelated yearling might actually be very much more political than one may realize. As Barry is not actually the 'elected' or fully accepted alpha and simply is acting a regent grooming up yearlings might be a much quicker way of making a good social connection that may actually extend to a stronger social connection to Tinky's mother. Intently grooming a yearling whose mom us now very distracted by a new baby may actually bond Tinky to him giving h more social connections through Tinky to many others and it would be much quicker to establish a bond with a lonely yearling than to a 3 or 4 year old who would not just bond over a bit of attention and is probably soon heading out if the troop. A yearling will be around for some time and certainly will get him access to his younger siblings and that way Barry could actually build up connections with family groups that way and have the support when he decides to really declare himself alpha.

Brilliant Ms.Pam, just Brilliant! I wonder if Barry is being “familiar” with Tiny as you said to gain a social standing, but also being familiar with her in grooming her as a future mate

@@venetabritt2771 Barry is grooming Tinky, the yearling son of Tracy who just had another male baby called Trinky. Teeny and Tiny are Tina's children, and that family is in Skullhead's troop. Barry is alpha female Bossy's son, who leads the troop we call Our Gang. All the "T" names are very similar, it's easy to confuse all of them!

It's not unusual that males to high ranking females to stay in the troop and some even coming and going. It's up to the matriarch to decide if she wants them gone or not and then she take help from the other females and drive them away. A Female in the troop would never mate with these boys so the urge to mate can often make the boy leave on his free will. 🤓🏴‍☠️🇸🇪

uh oh, Barry is not so nice now..hate that behaviour. Babies do as well, I'm sure...but he goes back and is so gentle Tinky naps! Barry's dextrous hands amaze me as do the others. Goodness I find myself relaxing as well as I watch. Hmmm, a simian trait🙄
