Iron Man Hulkbuster Cosplay #25 | Leg Work! | James Bruton

Part 25 of my Iron Man Hulkbuster Avengers age of Ultron inspired build. This week I'm testing walking as much as I can and sorting out the leg opening mechanism.
In this series, I build a complete Iron Man Hulkbuster cosplay with animatronics and mechatronics with a step-by-step guide to cover everything you’ll need to build your very own suit. From 3D printing the parts to installing the mechanics that make this whole suit wearable and actually able to walk around.

So as you can probably tell, as you wear the suit, the large chest and arms make the legs look much smaller, large in part of the thighs. I think a simple solution to help make the legs look longer and more proportional is to add a knee cap too lift everything thigh and up higher and so, taller. Have the cap line up with the thigh when straight and then slowly bend with the shin. But this is just an idea.

I wish I had done more trial and error testing with my armor before my first full suit up. Never think I could do something this big but it's cool. really want to see the finished suit but it's got a lot of work left still coming along. Your ability to rig mechanical engineering into your suits and projects is amazing and very informative.

Personally I think James has done an amazing job with this, the hands look a little bit derpy, but I'm sure nobody cares too much. However I think it may be a good idea to install cameras in the eyes, just a small camera, maybe position a phone with the camera pointing through the eye holes, so it's possible to see in front of you at all times, instead of having to peer through the small eye holes.

For more articulate, precise, and graceful motions of the Hulkbuster suits by the wearer, the Japanese has already the skeletal framework for large costumes. They can even run fast in these big suits. They were called "skeletonics". They can be viewed here in youtube

Have you considered installing gas struts/springs between the legs and torso, to take some weight off your shoulders? They could be adjusted to compress under the weight of the torso when standing on its own, but provide enough force to aid you while carrying it. :- )

Or maybe you allready do that and i'm just babling hehe dunno haven't seen your complete video serie. Anywayz nice work man! The hours you put in there i can't imagine. Respect!

Hello James. Thanks for another great episode. This opening mechanism for calfs is brilliant (again) and I'm surprised how smoothly it works. From my viewers point, whole mechanism looks a little bit to far to the back and outer side of the leg (considering there will be additional frame structure and foam panel with texture) yet that may be just wrong perspective impression from the video. I have one question and one suggestion though. First off, yould you estimate the weight of that torso or whole suit? It probably looks much heavier than what it really is. The sugegstion would be putting multiple arc reactors on the suit, like the movie hulkbuster has. I saw some trailer accurate statuette which had arc reactors on each calf, elbow and some additional on the back - that might be great feature for your suit aswell.

Looks good! For the ergonomic part: Couldn't you make some brackets (like the ones on your shoulders) to brace your legs at some place? Just so that you'll be "wearing" the suit more than "carrying" it. Also, I suggest something similar around your waist. I'm thinking about something like on those trekking backpacks: straps around the waist (in addition to the ones on the shoulders). It should redistribute the weight on your lower back and make it easier to carry. Otherwise nice work as always! :-)

Great looking mechanisms for everything so far. I does look a little odd, though, almost as if the legs need to be longer or the arms smaller. I get the impression of a gorilla walking about when you were moving it about. For the legs, would something like a hose clamp work for your legs? I'm not finding any pictures for reference, but a little more than U-shaped bracket that you press your leg into at the thigh and below the knee. That would give you more leg "feeling" while allowing you to just pull your leg free without needing releases or anything. I'm not sure if I'm explaining that well enough or not.

There was a bit of genuine worry as the thing came free and you started walking, but it's really cool to see it moving as one piece again. I know feet cosmetics are probably a ways off, but I'm curious what you'll do for them, knowing that the toe catches. I'm assuming it wouldn't be good to extend a boot out unless it angles up in the front. :/

James the doors look great, but as far back as you have the calf coming out wont it wind up binding on the upper leg with how far forward the knee pivot is? It just seems like the calf needs to be sucked a bit more in, or the knee pivot needs relocated more rearward.
