My great grandfather fought and died at the 3rd battle of Ypres, otherwise known as Paschendale, his body was never found. I went there last year to commemorate 100 years since the end of the war and found his name on a wall at Tynecot cemetery. It was a very humbling and moving experience, this song means so much to me than ever before. Great reaction and thanks for the suggestion Ryan

Dance of Death, Infinite Dreams and Alexander easily beat Mariner. If we consider also the live versions, you can add at least Sign of the Cross from Rock in Rio. Maybe also The Clansman. Mariner is great, but is a bit too repetitive.

At the Menin Gate in Ypres, from where most of the troops marched towards Passchendale during the First World War, every night at eight for almost a hundred years now, the Last Post is played on bugles for the lost and missing of WWI. Menin Gate is a memorial since 1927 that has all the names engraved in its walls of British and Commonwealth soldiers that were never found and never got burried at one of the dozens of memorial graveyards. Five major battles took place around Ypres. The Third Battles is known as The Battle Of Paschendale and took around five months to finish. 300,000 Brits were killed there of which 30,000 still have no grave. My grandfather was a volunteer who survived all five battles and spent three and a half years in the bloody trenches...

@@KristinKali Small world, but big war.. 30+ countries involved, 70 million soldiers and the main countries involved lost 8-10 million soldiers and 20 million injured. The battle of paschendale alone had 870k casualties in a few weeks. And that's only one battle of 4 battles that one village had. It's impossible to imagine both the scale and ineffective way of warfare, brutal even how some generals did send soldiers to a certain dead without any logic or reasonable purpose.

The passage at the start is an exert from the poem Anthem for Doomed Youth written by the British officer Wilfred Owen, he served in the trenches in early 1917 (a little before the period of the battle this song is about) was injured and returned to the front in 1918 to be killed in action in the final month of the war, November 1918. He wrote a number of powerful and moving poems during the approximately 18 months of his combat service and convalescence. This song does a great deal of honor to the poet and those brave doomed souls he wrote about, including tragically himself.

So, perhaps for context, WW1 on it's European front, was one of the most mindless wastes of human life in history. Big armies dug trenches a 100yds from each other and then spent several years throwing men at each other in an endless wave of pointless death. Paschendale was just one of many futile pointless battles, Bruce captures the irony and bitterness so well. We're so fucking stupid.

If you can do a little bit of research on Paschendale, you'll find it was one of the bloodiest conflicts ever fought in WW1. It was a terrible battle and cost so many lives. There was a painting a man saw once of a battlefield and he said surely it must be over painted, over exaggerated, but once he participated in WW1, he realised it was under-painted. There was so much carnage and so much death and despair in WW1 and this battle in particular. If you haven't done Alexander the Great by Iron Maiden, I'd suggest doing that, as they are great at story telling and giving you a history lesson at the same time.

One of the German High Command generals in 1917 described the British army infantrymen as "Lions, led by donkeys". Such pointless sacrifice of men on both sides, carrying out the orders of generals and politicians who simply didn't care about them and built careers on the sacrifice of others. "The glory of nations, paid for with the blood of the ordinary man." In my eyes, nothing ordinary about any of them on either side, just true patriots. X

Don’t quote me on any of that because I’ve just use Google to look some of the stats up But it definitely was a horrible battle in the First World War. The movie passion Dale was also awesome in this regard. War is horrible but We all should learn from the past and trying to avoid it happening again:) At the irons and rock on:)

its so important for the world to remember this Belgian battle and the scores of British and Canadian who perished in it due to disregard for soldiers lives and their families. it is illustrative of the multitude of such battles which were poorly strategically planned and the import of which was quickly abandoned in favor of more stategic locations. and on a larger scale the horror and toll of the entire ww1, wich was set off due to prideful and resent driven motivations of the european elite. whats even more disturbing and melancholy about it ,is that it also in part set the stage for ww2......... but on a serious note, what kind of fashion statement do you think Bruce's helmet makes?
