One of my favourite post 2000 maiden songs. Knowing my great grandad stayed behind with a box of ammo and a gun so they the rest of his men could escape and live another day and died doing it during that battle makes this song special for me. Thank you maiden.

Anthem for Doomed Youth BY WILFRED OWEN What passing-bells for these who die as cattle? - Only the monstrous anger of the guns. Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle Can patter out their hasty orisons. No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells; Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,- The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells; And bugles calling for them from sad shires. What candles may be held to speed them all? Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes. The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall; Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds, And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

There are many like me - grew up with Maiden since early 80's, bought killers when I was 12 and haven't missed a single song since. This is the soundtrack to my life, Maiden touched lives all over the world for over 4 decades and they continue to. Just sheer talent with an (almost) obsessive adherence to their sound and their goal. It has been a treat to have a third guitarist added to the fold - for as good as the bass, drums and Bruce are - the riffs and the synergy in the guitars is the part that always stuck in my head. Janick is the perfect add to Dave and Adrian.

@@johnz6977 The cool thing was the mystery to it. These guys were more God-like to us. Example: Ozzy was mysterious as hell but then later he's more like a caricature of himself. Imagine that you go buy the vinyl or the cassette, then you had to listen to it in your room - there's no other way to hear it. The cassette was for your car though. If you were lucky a track would get on the radio. Example - Motley Crue, Looks That Kill made them big as hell on FM radio in 1982. FM hard rock stations played all the stuff we wanted to hear except Metallica. It took them like 8 years to get on the radio with the black album! Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven was huge on the radio and later Fool In The Rain off their last album got some radio play for a while there.

@@joedugas9462 depends on the performance. They were not always terrible. Steelheart never disappointed. Mötley Crüe was OK as long as Vince wasn’t too high. Poison did all right. Mr. Big always stole the show. Guns ‘n ROZES was freaking amazing. So was Skid Row. And then, there’s Van Halen. Enough said. I can’t speak to Bon Jovi. I went to his concert in 2017 when he was already old. And, dammit, he did that thing where the crowd is expected to sing all the high notes. He didn’t do it with dead or alive though, thank God. The entire rest of the show was great though. They didn’t suck.

I was fortunate enough to see all of the "Live after Death" shows in Long Beach and Irvine. I also saw them this year in Anaheim and I've got to say, Bruce Dickersons' voice is just as good as ever. I believe he had throat cancer at some point in the years between the shows I saw. It was amazing to see him sing with just as much vigor as he did in 1982. You should think about reacting to Judas Priest. Rob Halford is another incredible singer who can still nail his older songs. Including " Pain Killer" which I thought there was no chance of him performing in 2022. He was spot on both of these guys represent the best of old classic metal and put many younger bands to shame at f'n 70+ years of age. We old f%&ks can still rock your asses off Rock on Mother F'ers! A faction of the fans criticized this song when it came out in 2003, because it has many pauses (which is partially true)... which is the reason why the rest of the fans loved it lol. I like how it mimics the rhythm of the battle and the mechanic fire of the gatling guns, and how the whole song is basically a death march. If you're not familiar with the Battle of Passchendaele, read the Wikipedia article. One of the deadliest battles of WW1, almost immediately considered a total fiasco and one of the worst disasters in British military history. The campaign took place in a swamp in Belgium, it lasted three months, and one of battles happened under a heavy rain ("Blood is falling like the rain"...). At the end, both factions lost tens of thousands of soldiers. Another cool thing about the song is that the solo section is constantly descending in tonality, from E minor (first solo, Dave Murray) to C# minor (second, Adrian Smith) to G# minor (verse: "Blood is falling like the rain"); third solo (Janick Gers) is in D minor, a tritone from G# minor.

2 of the greatest battles in WW1 were Paschendale and Vimmy Ridge. Both had other allied troops try to take the ground. But in these 2 battles Canadian troops went farther and harder and took more ground than any other army. In WW11 Canada's troops stormed the "supposed" 2nd best defended. so 2nd toughest beachheads to invade. Yet by the end of the day Canadian troops had reached farther into France than any other countries.

Pascendale is a spine tingling song in every respect. The studio version has some orchestration which makes it even cooler. And yeah the lyrics are really poignant.

Steve Harris is one of the best lyricists ever imo. I love watching him mouth the words while shredding his bass at the same time. I have seen them 11 times and only once did they play this. A lot of the crowd did nor know it. Oh Brother..I Did! One of my personal favorites.
