Adrian and Steve wrote this together. I love the lyrics, it's so brutal and uncensored. They're not holding back with the details. Adrian's solo after Dave's gives me goosebumps every time. And Bruce is just the best storyteller ever!

Yeah I think Adrian came to Steve with the opening finger tapping riff and said he found it "haunting" and they thought it would be great for a song about war and they nailed it.

The live performance of this song is simply pure perfection.
Truly, up there with Maiden's greats. One of their best songs ever, in every respect.

Exactly right. 👍
Probably the most chilling lyrics I've ever heard in any song. Also an absolutely insane live song.
Bruce is the Master story teller! The way he delivers, the tone, it's just incredible!
There are no words to describe this song. It is an absolute masterpiece, and Adrian Smith is a legend for writing this. I knew you would love this one, it's just "one of those". It's brutally heavy and beautiful at the same time, and it contains some of the best melodies that they've ever written. The lyrics are haunting. Everything in this song paints a picture of what it must have been like in the war. I used to think Dance of Death was the best song on this album, but this has at least tied it in the past couple of years. Keep it up Hurm!

@@alexandre_am funny.
Wait until you see it live on the "Death on the Road" DVD, pure masterpiece.
Iron maiden means so much more than anyone would think to me, they were one of my fathers favorite bands of all time. Which they have become my 2nd or 3rd favorite band of all time through the years. Yesterday marked one year since his passing, I really miss him and miss the weekends where he would be drinking with his friends listening to Maiden/Dio/Ozzy and many more amazing bands.

@@bigredrocks2521 Absolutely, he took me to see Maiden in 2012. It was the seventh son tour, and he did take me to see ACDC at Gillette Stadium in 2009. That was my 1st ever concert, I still have the tickets
As YT deleted my first comment: Thank you for you awesome and moving reaction, for your honesty and spontaneity. This is a "wham!" song. One of the best Maiden songs ever. I also recommend the live version of Dortmund (Germany) 2006, also exeptional.
Seriously this is one of their best songs ever. Brutal, intricate, and uncompromising. It goes up in their top tier with Hallowed be thy name, Rime of the Ancient Mariner and all that shit. Your comparison with the Trooper is the best thing I heard in a long time 👏
After listening to it again now, I think this must be one of the best Maiden songs. It has everything! Epicness, lyrics, solos, drumming, vocals, goosebumps!! It would have been a perfect fit for the next album! 🤘

Thematically it would fit with AMOLAD yea, sonically nah
I don't know if you noticed, but this "solo" drum beat is an interpretation of the S.O.S message in Morse code.
I live about 10 miles away from Paschendale. The Brits know much more about what happened there than the locals over here. Bombshells still come to the surface in farmer's fields on a daily basis....
If you like the lyrics of this song you’ll love songs from the A Matter Of Life And Death album
This is a track written by Adrian Smith, lyrics and arrangements (and keyboards) by Steve Harris... Harris has said that Smith rarely writes lyrics for the band (3 songs on 'Somehwere in time' were his exceptions). He usually starts w/ a riff or an idea (or a melody), and the band joins in and jams... a song eventually gets fleshed out. And then Harris (or Bruce Dickinson) writes the lyrics - that's how Adrian Smith's songs come about.... Janick Gers and Dave Murray's contributions also work the same way. A riff, a melody or an idea... the band jams on it, and it gets an arrangement and then melodies and lyrics. Bruce Dickinson works a certain way w/ his songs - he composes his songs on his own and brings it to the band, and they opt to jam on it... The thing is, Steve Harris & Bruce Dickinson have completely different views and approaches on writing songs... The Battle of Passchendaele of 1917 took place in Belgium during World War I, between the Western Allies and the German empire... lasting a few months and famous for the bloodbath and misery, and in the end was a pointless British victory. 300+K Allied troops and 200+K German troops were killed...
A masterpiece by Adrian and Steve. It s full of those meticulous touches by Adrian and the lyrics... one of the best piece of lyrics ever by maiden. Full of emotions. Live version portrays a battlefield and you need to watch it
The live version of this song is a visual sight to behold.
These vatos write the best lyrics and instrumentals. Hurm, they are 2nd to none! Long live Rock n Roll 🤘
It's one of the most powerful songs of all time. Nicko is accompanying Adrian throughout the song doing Morse code on the drums.
Played live on death on the road, epic
No need to apologize for skipping a day. Most reactors go weeks without a revisit to a band, let alone take the time to go through an entire album--which is awesome, by the way--so you really are spoiling us. Thank you and LOVE this song!
This is one of my favorite songs. It is put together incredibly well, a true masterpiece. You gotta check out the live version, it is even better.
4:50 the 3rd Battle of Ypres, also known as the Battle of Passchendaele, took place during WW1, from July to November 1917, between the Allies and the German Empire. It was a carnage-there is no other way to put it. For despite the tactical victory obtained by the Allies, the battle resulted in a terrible strategic fiasco for them due to the human cost, the many errors committed by the British generals and the insistence on continuing the battles in October and November under the pouring rain. I think there is a section of this song which perfectly captures the tragedy of Paschendale, and it's the solo section, particularly the mid-solo verse ('Blood is falling like the rain / its crimson cloak unveils again' etc.) and Janick Gers' brutal guitar solo which follows. Also the main syncopated riff which somehow mimics the fire of the Gatling guns is great, and the closing verse 'Friend and foes will meet again / those who died at Paschendale' is really touching.
So hard hitting knowing it all really happened. The way it swings between subtle, quiet moments and loud, punchy riffs seems to reflect a war zone landscape in between moments of battle. Even the use of bells during the main chorus is chilling.
Pure masterpiece. Adrian again delivers the best solo of the 3 guitarists. Nicko is spectacular with his fills.
one of the songs of all time
This is it this is the ONE, I hate this term but it's epic, an incredible song obviously gives a clear indication of what the soldiers had to go through, At The Going Down of the Sun WE WILL REMEMBER THEM 🤘🤘🤘🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
I love this song cause I live 10min to Paschendale
One of those that highlights why it was so important to get Adrian back.
A FUCKING MASTERPIECE!!
Just to add that the inicial sound is Adrian playing tapping technique
This song instantly became my favorite Maiden tune.
This one is about Passchendaele battle in 1917: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Passchendaele You should see the live version of "Death on The road" 😎
Best song on the album! Face in the sand is my 2nd favorite
"rush of blood and over we gooooo" Such a powerful moment, takes you right there, amazing.
I remember I was able to play this in history class 15 years ago. 😅🤘 We analysed the lyrics. 😊
ABSOLUTE....MUST See LIVE...DORTMOND...
You NEED to see the live dvd from the tour on this album as you did with rock in rio, its so fucking great!!

He could do Journeyman from the DVD
Very impressive song. I like your comparison with the trooper. Thanks Hurm1t
I'm waiting for this song to be reacted at their performance at "Death on The road". It's a pure gem. One of their BEST performance live.
Hurm now you've got to watch it as a live performance. You're gonna love it even more!
The more you listen to this music, the better it is. If you want, check the Death on the road live version. Is badass!!!
I can't wait for you to get to A Matter Of Life And Death. In my opinion, in the top 10 of the best albums of the band, only behind Brave New World (which is easily the eighth best album of the band and only surpassed by the glorious and unbeatable albums of the 80s).
Mate there’s are two Orchestral visions of Dance Of Death and Paschendale on KZread if you want to check them out I hope you review the live concert of this album but close your eyes with the flashing lights in Paschendale song Bruce does a great performance in the song
This war at passendale - close to that other heavy hitted city Ieper by WWI was a REAL HELL on EARTh can't imagine as soldiers fighting their. Devestating. All 50 miles from where I live

It's Paschendale not Passendale as Passendale is a cheese and this song is definitely not about cheese!
Not only a great heavy metal song, but some fantastic imagery with the lyrics. The band clearly got a real taste for war based songs after this - the next album is pretty much all war. Even the title of the album is taken from a war time film of the same name.
Just wait for the live version of this one! 🤘
Amazing! When you do Age of Innocence, after please react to Nicko version of that song - Nicko singing Age of Innocence hahahah its jokes so yea, I didn't want you to die without knowing about it. #hurm1t #uptheirons
This song live is amazing, but with a lot of flashing lights. So,beware if you want to check it
To me, Paschendale is hands down Maiden’s best song in the modern era (2000 to present), as well as their best since the 80’s. Fantastic lyrics!

I'd say the wickerman is still my favourite. I think Paschendale is very comparable to For The Greater Good Of God
I never thought to compare this song to The Trooper, even knowing they’re both about war (as is Como Estais Amigos). Just goes to show that Maiden can make a lot of great songs about the same things, yet all distinct enough to stand on their own.
By the way... as good as the studio version is, this is infinitely better live. They put on a hell of a show!
This why this album is called "Dance Of Death" Great reaction 👍
It's better than anything on BNW
I was amazed (as this my 1st video of yours) that you didn't pick one of their bigger hits. But I'm glad you didn't as an old guy I was not famialiar wish song. It was agreat song. Canadians soldiers took part in the battle of "Paschendale". There was even a Canadian made movie about this battle.
Smith wrote a classic with Harris Murray first solo Smith second solo Jan’s 3rd solo I don’t know if you could watch this song live mate because there’s too much lightning Nick’o doing most code on the drums
I forgot how great is this song! Masterpiece...
Easily the most powerful song on this album!
Paschendale is about WW I... Cool sounds ? Morse code I think... this album is deep. 'Dance of death' is a context, not just a name...
Best song on the album by a country mile. Although Dance of Death after 19 years is finally growing on me… For me only 1 more good track on the album Age of Innocence. Face in the Sand has some cool elements but ultimately fails to deliver for me. But be interesting to see what you make of the coming songs and the album overall. Then you can look forward to a return to great form w other next Album - A Matter of Life and Death which incidentally is mostly a War Themed Album so that should appeal to you as well.
This for me is the best song on this album. Song is about the Battle of Passchendaele during WW1. The Third Battle of Ypres It was a campaign of the First World War, fought by the Allies against the German Empire. The battle took place on the Western Front, from July to November 1917, for control of the ridges south and east of the Belgian city of Ypres in West Flanders. As we said, a great song, glad you agree with our assessment. Adrian Smith and Steve Harris have the writing credits. Hurm, check out the video made of this song to the movie of All Quiet on the Western Front (kzread.info/dash/bejne/lWZkj8imj7q0ldo.html)
This is Adrian and Steve song btw
I purposely did not mention anything to you about this track as I'd rather you experience it with no expectations. 👍 This song hits as a Maiden classic should. 🤘It paints a great image of what this hell would have truly been like from the soldiers perspective. 💀It was good that you had the lyrics up as they do come out hard and fast. If you're able to read the story as Bruce is spitting out the words, the power of the delivery sinks even more (unless you don't need to of course). Worth checking the 'Death on the Road' Dance of Death Tour live version in Westfalenhallen, Dortmund, Germany. Just be aware that there is a lot of flashing lights during the performance though mate, so I'm not sure if they may be of a concern for you or not.
💎💎💎💎💎
What a complex song this one ! Live version rules ! Amazing riffs ,solos ,drums , Bruce vocals , masterpiece! Maiden perfect storyteller
Please man, react to Paschendale and Dance of Death LIVE!!
360p club
I finally get what is wrong with this album, besides the cover art. The album is too uneven. This song is a masterpiece, in my opinion. But then you have Gates of Tomorrow and New Frontier, which are not great. But then you have Dance of Death, which is legendary. Overall, I still love the album, but the low points are really low, mixed with high points that are as high as can be.
Nickos hi-hat throughout the song is supposed to be Morse code
