Back to the future was the biggest movie in 1985.. Then Somewhere in time came out in 86.. Back to the Future was a big smash hit at the time.. Then Maiden used some Blade Runner influence for the main idea.

Somewhere in time is my favorite too and it has their best album cover as well.

Phenomenal for sure! Title track, Wasted Years, Stranger In A Strange Land, and Alexander The Great was some powerful stuff! Really had that classic '86 arena reverb production!

Somewhere in Time is definitely my favorite album with Bruce Dickenson. I’ve also really come to love the first two albums with Paul DiAnno, maybe the first one a little more so.

I’m surprised Killers and Iron Maiden are so low. I still think Brave New World is the best of the Dickinson reunion albums too so that surprised me too. Fear Of The Dark is underrated I agree. If i had to pick a favourite maybe Somewhere In Time. Same as you.

I love the Blaze material too, so many good songs on those 2 albums that I’ve really grown to appreciate over the years. I didn’t like X-Factor when it came out, which blows my mind now. I think I must have subconsciously denied that it was good because I was so upset that the band was breaking up!

I agree. I've seen them 27 times live and Blood Brothers is perhaps their best live song IMO.

It will always be my favorite, there isn’t a single weak song on this album. Amazing work!

Brave New World is my absolute favorite album. I just think all the songs have so much story and so many transporting musical elements that it just can’t be beat. Great videos tho!!

I "discovered" Iron Maiden in 1984 with their 'Powerslave' album so it'll always be #1 on my list. 'Somewhere in Time' and 'Piece of Mind' aren't far behind. They're my second favorite metal band behind only Sabbath.

Just my opinion, i think the self titled is one of the best Albums they've releaced, its in the top 3 for me. Along with Powerslave and NOTB

Killers is my favorite, every song on there is "killer". I also love how dark it sounds. 2. Number of the Beast 3.Piece of Mind 4. Powerslave 5. Somewhere in Time No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark is where they started to lose me, not bad albums but quite a drop off from the previous albums IMO.

Well it came after the brilliant 7th son with its brilliant lyrics, phrasing and theme. Adrian left so a bit of maidens sound is missing. The production is not as good as the eighties albums imho. 7th son did well in Europe but thr Yanks never took to it so for me npfd was an attempt at re engaging with the American Market but for me it marks the end of maidens classic 80s period.

Very cool you put Somewhere in Time as number one because it was never one of my favorites but it shows how Iron Maiden speaks differently to different people. I think the best is the Paul D'Anno stuff because of the gritty vocals and there was more diversity and creativity in the songs. Not a big fan of Fear and No Prayer.. but Powerslave, SSofaSS, Mind, and Beast are some of my favorite albums of all time. Now I'll have to go back and revisit Somewhere in Time because of this review.

Piece of Mind 1. Seventh Son of a Seventh Son My top 5 could change on any given day; they are each amazing albums. I feel bad for putting Fear of the Dark and No Prayer so low because there are some terrific songs on those albums, but there are several songs on each that just seem like real stinkers to me. Overall, an amazing discography!

As a guitar practitioner who get caught more by guitar riffs and solos than vocals and other instruments, and as a fan for almost 12 years My personal top 5 List : 1) Somewhere in time (1998 remastered) (Has the best guitar riffs and solos ever. Also has the best B-side songs in any album) 2) Fear of The Dark (Man...This album takes you on a journey. Some songs like Childhood's End, Chains of Misery, Weekend Warrior are criminally underrated) 3) (This one is hard) Powerslave (An absolute classic in Aces high, 2 minutes... Some songs are really fun to play on guitar like Back in The village and also that galloping riff on Powerslave is a killer) 4) Seventh Son of A Seventh son ( Moonchild is the best album opener imo, also titletrack is instant classic) 5) Brave new World (Titletrack has one of the most complex guitar solos you could ever come up with. The Nomad is lowkey The Most Underrrated IM song) Other great albums : Killers, Number of the Beast Note: I never understood why Piece of Mind is such a fan favourite as i never really felt something special listening to that album. Sure The Trooper is a catchy song, but to me there are more less-known songs that i find a lot better.

That's a great ranking. Glad to see the 1st 2 albums get the respect they deserve. Killers is my favorite followed by Number of the Beast but your list is very similar to my tastes. Somewhere in Time is good but I can't see how anyone would have it ranked above the first 5 albums, no way. It does probably have the best cover art, although they are all great.

I'm SO glad you put Piece of Mind above NOTB and Powerslave. I think Piece of mind is so underrated. At least compared to the albums before and after it. Every song on it is great if not amazing. And amazing playing and tone. Love your #1 pick as well :)

There is no “Worst” Maiden album, only the “absolute best” albums. All of them are way beyond awesome!

X-Factor is one of my favorite Maiden Albums, though i must say, i had my problems with it back when it was released, because as a kid it was a must bashing the new singer because only trve maiden is with Dickinson bla bla... well, many years later i started to fell in love and enjoy X-Factor as a part of Maiden. X-Factor is definitly a "grower" but if it hits you... Also it is the "darkest" Maiden Album which has an impact on me when i have also some not good mood moments.

Extremely interesting #1. I didn't see that coming at all. I mean, obviously by the process of elimination I knew it was going to be in your top 3 but still, quite an intriguing pick for #1. I agree. I have always thought Somewhere in Time is the best of a brilliant catalogue. Glad you picked up. It is often overlooked in favour of Peace or Number but their strongest collection of songs. And the tour was awesome. Two nights at Sheffield City Hall. Those were the days. Thanks

Respectable list bro!!🤘🤘 Regarding the top 3 as for myself I'd flip #1 and #2 spot,... my very first album owned and first introduction to Iron Maiden was Piece of Mind and was truly a life changing experience for 13-14yr old me! Still my fav Maiden album and easily top 3 fav album of all time across all rock, hard-rock, and metal subgenres!!!🤘🤘

My favorite Maiden album has to be Somewhere In Time as for me personally it was the most impactful and there was just something about the production quality that made that album so special which is why I wished Maiden would play more tracks from that album anytime they play a live gig.

Somewhere in time is by far my favorite maiden album. The song writing the production the use of synthesizer the melodies. Just everything about that album is incredible.

Good list! You've given a lot of thought to this and came up with a unique list that I'm sure many IM fans disagree with (I'd change some stuff too) but your appreciation of their music is obvious! Somewhere in Time is basically my co-favorite album along with Seventh Son, followed by Piece of Mind, Number, Killers and Powerslave, then Iron Maiden. It's really tough to rank their first 7, especially when realizing that Brave New World, Dance of Death and A Matter are all excellent too. I've rarely seen No Prayer ranked that high but I can appreciate that, it's a good consistent album, although I feel Fear of the Dark has a couple better standout tracks (but a weaker album overall).

Interesting list and probably a hard one to do. I love every one of those albums and I’ve been a fan since I was in HS when NOTB first came out. Some of your choices I agree with, including your #1. Somewhere in Time is incredible and the tour was phenomenal, my first of 14 times seeing them. Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is my all time favorite Maiden song. It embodies everything that is the unique sound of Iron Maiden, especially the emotion. ROTAM is a very close 2nd and for all the same reasons. I was a little surprised that you didn’t have Brave New World higher though. It’s so good from start to finish and it’s a long double album, but seems shorter because it’s so intense.

Never understood the hate for Final Frontier. No matter how many times I listen to it, I still have a good time. Their 2000s stuff is underrated too, totally agree. My awards list would be 1) Number, 2) Powerslave, 3) Somwhere In Time

Brave New World is great! One of my favourite albums, and the one than brings Iron Maiden back to the top. I bought the Brave New World t-shirt just yesterday.

A lot of people hate No Prayer for the Dying. Sure, it was nowhere near as good as SSOASS, but its not bad. Loved that you put it in the top 5.

The Final Frontier has grown on me. Some really good songs on that album. The Talisman is a really underrated song in my opinion.

I totally agree with your top 4 ranking. Maybe I´d rank the debut album and Killers higher but all in all this is a great ranking.

I belong to an older generation so I see the things in a very different way, and that's interesting. :) My top favourites are: 1- Killers 2- Somewhere in Time 3- Power slave 4- The number of the beast I have to say that these four are almost in the same position for me: too great to put one of them below the others. That said, that's a super band and we all thank them!

BryceTalksMetal, Interesting list...certainly a far cry from most Maiden fans. I personally LOVE that 'A Matter Of Life And Death' finally broke into the Top 10 on someone's list! (probably in my Top 5 in their discography). It was, however surprising to see 'Somewhere In Time' eclipse your #2 and #3 choices as well as how low you ranked 2000's 'Brave New World.' Another good video Bryce , sucks they took other one down , I got hit with a copyright warning/ban on a Guns N’ Roses live video I posted , so I removed all the live videos I took of them sadly, hopefully this one doesn’t get taken down , heard music in the background but you seemed to talk over it most the way through , a few bands will go after you for anything , I had a friend lose her Facebook account and years of pictures she couldn’t get back after posting an eagles song , those guys come after you for anything you post of them with there music in it.

Your top 4 is also my top 4, no surprise there I'm sure, but I have mine (right now anyway) at... #1: Piece Of Mind #2: Powerslave #3: Number Of The Beast #4: Somewhere In Time My top 2 could switch, and my #5 is prolly Killers. I'm an old school Maiden fan and when Somewhere In Time came out, I didn't really love it. I thought it was a little, I dunno, more "commercial" and maybe a lil meh, but it super grew on me.

I'm old. Grew up on Maiden from Killers, but Somewhere in Time is criminally underrated. I can listen to this album all the way through. No track skipping. Love it. Good choice.

What do you think about their latest album, Senjutsu?

SiT is an a absolute masterpiece, my favorite album. I'm on board when you say No Prayer For the Dying is criminally underrated, although it is not so high in my ranking. Brave choice for #5. I actually really like most of it. Even "Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter". I probably need to listen to Dance of Death again. I hated it when it came out and the cover made it even worse. Your #1 is my favorite as well. And the reason I started getting into guitar synthesizers. Great, great album \m/

Mainly it’s just Di’Anno’s singing style at times reminding me of some of those 70s punk bands which I’m not a fan of... but he’s grown on me over the years and it doesn’t bother me too much at this point

I seen SIT live in 87. Greatest concert I've ever seen!

May have said this in the last vid but I also went to that 2017 Nashville show as well! It was a great show and I got some nice pictures.

Nice list-for me-only the 80's matter-Powerslave-Piece-Somewhere in Time-Beast-7th Son-No Prayer(90s but snuck in)-Killers-Iron Maiden. THanks for the vid and Up the Irons.

Great ranking like it your ranking is different than main stream

I couldn't resist doing my own ranking. I've been a fan of Maiden for over 30 years now. They got me into metal! Personally, I love Final Frontier. If not for sentimental reasons, it would be my #1 album. I'm surprised you ranked Brave New World so low, but to each their own! I respect your list! One final note is that other than Virtual XI, I don't think there is a bad album here. I'm horribly biased, as Maiden is my #1. I do rank Bruce's solo albums - Accident of Birth and Chemical Wedding above the Maiden offerings. Just throwing that in there. No Prayer for the Dying is such a good album. Don’t understand why some people hate it ! I also think Somewhere in Time is Maiden’s best album. It’s Fantastic ! 🤘

No prayer is a damn good album. Its not as epic. Bring ya daughter n holy smoke are the only duds. Tailgunner wld be in my top 10. Far better then the last crappy ones

I like No Prayer, a couple of songs are a bit meh but it's a good album. Their hidden gem in a way

Time was the first Album I got back in the 80s and was hooked. So for me personally it is the number one. Masterpiece of an era that was a joy to experience.

I like your list. NPFTD and FOTD would be in my top 7.

Saw them in 87 on the Somewhere In Time tour. You needed six eyes to watch that show. They had inflatable gadgets hanging from the ceiling of the Arena. Saw them a second time on 7th Son anniversary tour where they played the entire album, which is my favorite

Ì wasn't expecting someone else to have NPFTD in their top 5! All my friends hate it. It's probably my fav Maiden album along with A Matter of Life and Death and Piece of Mind!
