    Both good, extremely talented bands, but Judas Priest's catalogue of good songs is much larger than Maiden's, and those songs are better songs. Rock Forever probably has one of the best vocals of any song, not just Metal. I also like their ballads better, Before the Dawn and Evening Star for crying out loud. Anthems like United and Take on the World...it goes on and on.

    - Bruce Dickinson vs Rob Halford is not a fair comparison since they have different singing styles: Bruce is all chest, while Rob is all throat. Bruce has more sustain and power in his voice, while Rob sings higher notes. - Nicko McBrain vs Scott Travis is also not fair since they have different drumming styles: Nicko is more "progressive and jazzy", while Scott is more "rhythmic", if that makes any sense. Also one uses the double-bass, while the other does not. - I've seen both bands Live, and it's instantly clear who puts on the better show: Maiden. - Janick Gers helped carry the band at their weakest, he is very active onstage, and contributes songwriting to every album he's been on. Fans should give him the respect he deserves. - Another thing I wished they talked about is band sound: Maiden started playing "Punk" clubs and pubs in London, then became part of the NWOBHM movement, then slowly matured to a Progressive Rock / Heavy Metal sound. Priest on the other hand changed styles more often and sometimes more abruptly: they started as a Glam Rock band, then they adopted the whole biker / leather & metal studs look by late 70's. Then they released a Heavy album (British Steel), followed it by an FM / Classic Rock album (Point of Entry), then went back to Heavy Metal with Screaming For Vengeance. After that they slowly adopted some Glam Metal sounds from the LA Sunset Strip scene in the 80's. Then in 1990 they turned up the dial and released a super Heavy and aggressive album Painkiller with a sound they still uphold to this day. - British Steel: excellent side A, horrible side B. I give it 7/10, and I'm being generous. - When I recommend these bands, I pick Number of the Beast and Screaming For Vengeance as their most iconic. Followed by Powerslave/Seventh son and Defenders/Painkiller.

    I love both, but I think Priest has the better guitar solos and vocals. Meanwhile Maiden has the better bass and drums. Songwriting wise, Maiden's are a little more formulaic but that's because it works. They mainly have long and epic songs, and energetic short songs. Priest on the other hand had their style really evolve throughout their career and so they have a wide variety of stuff. That's not to say Maiden isn't varied, just that to me they didn't change much in their evolution (which again isn't good or bad). But I feel like it's important to note because that is a double edged sword for both bands. There's people who only like 70s Priest and hate their 80s stuff, people who like both, all sorts of taste combinations. For Maiden, since their style remained relatively the same there's people who love them and people who hate them, and people who think their music gets repetitive. I like Priest just a little bit more because they've a music style for each mood and because of their godly solos. Don't get me wrong, Maiden have amazing solos too but Priest's leads are always so damn good! KK and Glenn really pushed themselves to be better while I feel that Dave and Adrian kind of stayed on their comfort zone. They did obviously get better too but not as good as KK and Glenn in my opinion.

    Iron Maiden for Imagery and thematic writing, but Judas Priest takes the cake for many reasons. JP had 6 albums out before IM had 1, so some could say IM was inspired by JP. Sad Wings and Sin after Sin are 2 of the greatest metal albums ever with a ton of variety, I mean "Here come the tears" = greatness. JP to me is more "Metal" because to me one of the pillars of metal is rebellion and JP continued to push the envelope and break the laws (ha ha). IM is very progressive, but so is JP. Everyone shits on Rocka Rolla but is has "Run of the mill" which is fantastic and has a runtime of 8:34. Halford was openly gay while taking shit from the public and still putting out amazing, socially it doesn't get more progressive then that. Also, Don is right when he says "JP does something different every album" which is truly progressive. And fuck ppl, Turbo is great! Halford I believe has better vocal range, which allowed for more variety of metal creations. I will say, Iron Maiden puts on a better live show. The theatrics, the stages, the props, it is a huge production. Also, Bruce is still able to destroy his vocals live while running around at the age of 58, whereas Halford is finally struggling live and engages the crowd to help sing the tough parts. It is not easy, but Priest for me for sure

    I'm very torn on this argument. I gravitated towards Maiden in my early stages as a metal fan but have since grown to love Priest too. Maiden wins in overall discography and consistency. However, there's something to be said for the sheer diversity within the Priest discography. I can't imagine a time where I'm not in the mood to listen to something from the Priest catalog. Maiden on the other hand sticks much closer to their signature formula. There are definitely times where I'm not in the mood to hear anything from Maiden. This is nearly an impossible choice.

    To all of the people who say Maiden is more melodic, I ask you this; have you even heard Priest's 70's albums? Sad Wings, Sin After Sin, and Stained Class imo are some of the most extraordinary pieces in metal music. There is a combination of georgeous melodies, raw power, and melancholy lyrics that speak to the heart. At the end of the day, if you still like Maiden more, that's fine and you're entitled to your opinion. Halford vs Dickenson I'm going to say Dickenson. As a front man he is SPRINTING, CLIMBING, HEADBANGING, AND SINGING! He is carrying flags, running into the crowd, climbing on top of the stadium. He runs a figure 8 for 2-4 hours straight while singing and NEVER seems out of breath. Halford meanders around on stage. The difference is Halford walks with a kind of old wise holy figure. Like the Metal God he is he majestically struts in a way that demands respect. But let's be fair, if Maiden is a 10 then Priest is a 9.5

    Maiden are good. But I find them repetitive. They have a very successful formula as seen by their fame - they have great marketing and a brand. The best thing about Priest is that they have light and shade and are more dynamic. And saying that a metal band has to be pure metal and only metal - what? No wonder some albums I have listened to feel formulaic. I also believe that a big factor in the belief that Maiden are better is because of the age of internet and social media going fans - i.e. too young to have seen Judas Priest at their peak. As Priest have poorer marketing; have been more musically eclectic (therefore lack a distinct brand); and are older, people have to actively seek out their best albums; live recordings; bootlegs etc to really understand. Maiden are more immediate, better marketed and more commercialised. They are a gateway band. That's not to say that they a bad, but they are more simplistic (in spite of the increasing prog direction. The fact remains) and formulaic; Bruce is a strong singer, but again only seems to go in one gear; and they can't do tight, rock solid rock that has a groove to it; nor can they do a raw, vicious and very tightly performed metal as Judas Priest can.

Maiden will sell out arenas even with this "metal" songs on their playlist for sure.

    I think these kind of comparisons are pointless. There's no way to say for sure, it's subjective and this just doesn't do justice to.... IRON MAIDEN FOREVER!!!!!!!!! (also Painkiller is a god damn master piece.)

    Took a friend to go see iron maiden for his birthday in 2001. He loved metal, I hated it. I only went because it was his birthday. They were supported by Halford. I enjoyed iron maiden but was blown away by this halford guy. Discovered Judas Priest. Became a metal head. Love both bands for this.

    Screaming for vengeance is a perfect album. I like every song on it. I've been listening to it since the day it was released and I still love it. The only song I ever skip is you've got another thing coming and that's probably the biggest hit of theor career.

    Enjoyed this ..... But not at all the way I would do the album to album comparison, I would have gone with comparing albums by release year. Defenders of the Faith vs. Powerslave ... Turbo vs. Somewhere in Time and so on. For me..... Maiden all the way!! But, love Priest :)

    Maiden ALLLL DAAAYY! But honestly I LOVE them BOTH! Maidens live show seals the deal... However there is those catchy classic rock radio hits and bone crushing deep tracks that inspired thrash, black, and death metal Priest had and that Maiden never wrote. It's tough... I get it!

    Best drum opening of a Metal song would be Locomotive by Motörhead from No Remorse (1984) with drummer Pete Gill. Another Motörhead song that can be mentioned for it's opening drum is Overkill (1979) with the legendary "Philthy Animal" Taylor on drums. That song became sort of a template for the double bass drums used by Thrash bands like Slayer.

    Love both bands. Maiden were the band that got me into metal music (along with Sabbath of course). I love their epic, melodic style with those progressive influences. However, Priest appeal to me a bit more. Raw, faster, furious and undeniably heavier. Rob Halford is the Metal God

  • @GermanLeftist
    @GermanLeftist6 жыл бұрын

    Let me settle this: They're both absolutely amazing, maybe the best bands in the metal genre and in the end it comes down to personal taste. I personally prefe Iron Maiden, mostly due to Harris' more aggressive bass playing and I just like Dickonson's vocal work better, but I'll never say that Rob Halford is a worse singer. These two, together with Freddie Mercury, are for me the holy trinity of rock and metal singers. And when it comes to the guitar, Glenn Tipton is absolutely amazing and K. K. Downing is also astonishing but so are Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, Jenick Gers is a bit off an odd-man-out, still a very good guitar playing but he sometimes just doesn't sound like he belongs to Iron Maiden for me.

    I vote Maiden. While Priest had imo better standout singles than Maiden, Maiden's first seven full length albums were brilliant cover-to-cover. On all 7 of them I say the sum of the whole is better put together than any individual parts isolated.
