I love that this episode shows that, despite being an incredible fighter and having a natural affinity for airbending, zaheer is still a novice airbender. Against a true master, he's constantly on the defensive

Zaheer is not at novice level of proficiency. An actual novice wouldn't have lasted more than a few seconds. IIRC, generally the way one earns master tattoos is by inventing a new technique, and Zaheer probably did that when he killed the Earth Queen. (The technique probably existed before, but the Air Nation wouldn't have recorded and passed down something like that. They aspire to pacifism, a pacifist isn't going to teach lethal techniques.) I see Zaheer as (analogy time) a 1st degree black belt, while Tenzin is a 10th. You don't really want to F with either of them, but one is clearly better than the other. Also, in just about all of his previous fights Zaheer was facing off with folks that had never fought an Airbender before. Hell, even Kya had not likely gotten into a bending augmented fight with Tenzin since they were kids, woman hasn't fought an Airbender in decades, nevermind one willing to use deadly force.

Zaheer is not really a novice the way most people think. He didn't pick up airbending super fast Instead, he is an actual airbending expert. he spent a big chunk of his life studying airbending. He did so because he planned to teach it to korra after he kidnapped her. He has lots of hours of practice and learning. What he never had was the actual power to airbend so far, so on that part he is a novice. Or rather, he's only ever had the theoretical of the technique

What gives Zaheer the advantage in a lot of battles is that most benders have no training on combating Airbending. Tenzin practiced against his father. Which is why I strongly feel Tenzin would have won that fight in a 1v1 situation.

The way that they shot Tenzin getting beaten is so brilliantly directed. You just see him surrounded and outmatched, he fights as much as he can, then they slowly move the camera to the side so it is left to the audience’s imagination. And on top of all that, everyone’s favorite uncle Iroh shows up again?!?!😭😭😭😭😭 God this season is so damn awesome!!!

Zaheer might be extrordinarily talented, but tenzin is called a master for a reason

One thing you/we gotta understand about Airbenders/airbending, even from Aang's time is that; people don't know how to fight them. It was something Aang even said from BK1EP2 (I think), "I guess you guys haven't fought Airbenders before, I bet I could take on you guys with both my arms tied." Zaheer was already a skilled non-bender combatant, and the leader of his group of master benders. Him getting airbending just augmented his fighting style. But even at that, Zaheer was at best an amateur Airbender, and he stood no chance Jinora, let alone her father (Tenzin). So, yeah, Zaheer is a strong fighter and would win most fights against amateur-expert benders. He would lose to a master bender though.

zaheer is a prodigy, and an incredible fighter before bending, who happened to have studied the air nomads teachings and has no qualms about using airbending to its most brutal and deadly effect (I mean bending the air out of someones lungs is like as horrifying as blood bending). He understands it like a master in a theoretical way, but has very little experience But Tenzin is a master, the master of air bending at this time, the son and successor of Aang, and one of the few people who has actually sparred against a master airbender. I feel like hes underestimated and underutilized through most of the show, but this demonstrates that he really is a force to be reckoned with, and pure airbending skill wise outclasses zaheer, who's had airbending for like a month lmao

These are such a joy to watch. Their grandmother cracks me up

This showed the power of a true airbending master compared to a talented one like Zaheer. Also this trilogy of episodes is peak LoK, and some of the best episodes of Avatar in general

Tenzin’s mistake was splitting him and his siblings up. If it was 3-on-3, they may have made it out, being able to watch each other’s backs, as opposed to 1-on-1, where Tenzin was fine, but no one else stood a chance with their match ups.
