Irish Wolfhound - Top 10 Facts

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Irish Wolfhound is a historic sighthound dog breed from Ireland that has by its presence and substantial size inspired literature, poetry, and mythology. Like all sighthounds, it was used to pursue game by speed; it was also famed as a guardian dog, specializing in protection against and for the hunting of wolves.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Irish Wolfhound that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Hound Dogs
Weight: 115 to 180 pounds
Height: 32 to 35 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 6-8 years
When Irish eyes are smiling, you can be sure they belong to an Irish Wolfhound. He has a noble and commanding appearance, but beneath his shaggy eyebrows twinkle eyes with a sweet, gentle expression. This ancient breed originated in Ireland, where he served as both a war dog and a hunting dog. He came close to extinction in the 19th century after the great prey animals - wolves, deer, and wild boars - had largely disappeared in Ireland, but the breed was revived and today is a wonderful companion who draws the admiration of many.
The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of all dog breeds and the largest of the sighthounds - dogs that chase moving prey. Despite his distant past as a ferocious war dog, he's a gentle giant who gets along with everyone, including children, other dogs, and sometimes even cats. He loves long walks, which are important in maintaining his huge body, but otherwise, he's satisfied to be a couch potato.
While they're quiet indoors, Irish Wolfhounds are not recommended for apartment living. Consider whether you'd be able to get one up and down the stairs if he were injured or sick. They do best in a home with a large fenced yard where they can have room to run. The Irish Wolfhound is not the ideal watchdog. He doesn't bark an alarm, and although he has the size to deter many would-be intruders he doesn't have the nature of a guard dog. He's brave but not aggressive.
Like any dog, the Irish Wolfhound isn't the breed for everyone. His gigantic size alone is a consideration. He has several health issues that potential owners must be aware of. And he's a short-lived breed who has only a 6- to 8-year life span. If you're looking for a breed that lives many years and is easy to care for, then he's not the breed for you. But if you're looking for a companion who will fill your life with love, admiration, and sloppy kisses, then look no further.

I was working in a very expensive upscale house repairing a baluster on the staircase when a very very large dog ( Irish Wolfhound ) came running down the hallway it stopped in front of me about two feet away and started barking while leaning down toward me( I was kneeling on the floor ) The housekeeper maid came in and said pet him. I said no way am I going to pet him and she responded pet him or he will not leave you alone. So I did proceed to pet him and for the next 2 days I had a brand new friend. But I must add I almost crapped my pants when he first came running at me. All in all it was a good experience

Wolfies are friendly to those friendly to them, but if they encounter someone with "bad intentions" they have the amazing ability to sense it immediately and become some of the most formidable guard dogs youve ever seen. The Irish Wolfhound- "gentle when stroked, furious when provoked "😉

I had a female Irish Wolf Hound that lived to 11. She had bad hips at 6 months and required an operation but other than that lived a healthy life before a short illness. She was an amazingly loving and protective dog. Enjoy your time with yours.

Don't think about the time when she leaves this world, or it will come true sooner than you'll expect! It is a fact that you get what you wish for; if you tell yourself that your dog will be healthy and live a long life then she will! Trust me, it works!!

They are FRIENDLY!. I lived in the country years ago & there were few people around. I often took walks down the (on pavement). When this dog, at the end of the road, was lonely, I figured because he was super eager to love on you (me). He'd know I was walking his way he'd come running toward me. I never have been afraid of any dog but I had to stand hard on my ground because he'd enthusiastically jump up, put both front legs around my shoulders. The only way I could have been hurt by this beautiful, marvelous canine friend was his great height could knock me down. I've never had the outdoor room for an Irish Wolfhound, but this would be my first pick. SOOOO lovable!

I have a female that is 14 months old, 33" at tye shoulder and @125lbs. She is very quick and agile, loving, timid around strange adults but loves kids and love to cuddle. She was very destructive when she was younger and left alone, not so much now but has her moments. There are only 4 wolfhounds in my Tri State area, 2 in my city including mine and she's definitely a conversation starter. I'm a very lucky guy to have her, she is the best 💓💓. Thanks for you video

Don’t agree, my soon to be 3 year old Wolfhound is a great watch dog. Don’t know if she would actually do anything but her deep growl and her barking are very intimidating. Also, yes she has a prey drive and will chase animals in the forest but as soon as she realizes I’m not with her she comes running back to find me, usually after less than a minute. Otherwise she is probably the most intelligent and sweet dog I have ever had.

I have a Wolfhound. Expect injuries, not because they are attacking you but that tail is lethal when you were sitting down and it’s wagging. Also stepped on toes. The video is correct about not barking. Someone can walk into my house and not even know I have a dog until he comes around the corner. Expect a 2+ year wait list for a reputable breeder.

acquaintances of my grandparents have had them for decades. They currently have six and they‘re so sweet! They have a huuuge area to run around outside but once they go inside, they‘re super chill and calm. Their prey drive depends on the situation. The wolfhounds of these friends have killed several neighbour cats but only if they invaded their territory and started running („behaving like prey“). The owners have a really good connection to their dogs though and whenever they say „stop“, the dogs will spit out what they‘ve got in their mouths (but of course they don‘t always see what the dogs are doing 100% at the time). I personally really enjoy having them around because they‘re curious but sweet at the same time (but I probably will never get one myself because I think I‘m not the right person to take care of such a huge and in a way demanding dog)

Wolfhounds of today, are nothing like the original breed. The original wolfhound was a great hunting and protection dog, and fairly aggressive. When the breed was all but lost, there were several other breeds used to create the wolfhound of today. Although similar looking, to the original breed, it has lost most of its prey drive, and fire in the process.

@@minktrappingpaddy My uncle I worked for when I was a kid at his kennel bred hunting Irish Wolfhounds and he did not have much if any respect for AKC standards since he knew they didn't know about what they was doing so he went by UKC standards. His Hounds was no taller than any other IW but was stronger and heavier than a IW AKC back yard house pet. They did have a strong pray drive and had endless amounts of fire but wasn't aggressive to people but hell on Coyotes in the US and Lobo Wolves in Canada in the 1960's. Him and a kennel in Kansas what was doing the same traded Dogs back and fourth and was breeding them back to their glory days but the down size to them was they was very rear and very costly to the pocket book. The ones that didn't make the cut was sold for less as a pet. He told me the IW's us and the kennel in Kansas was as close to the IW as you can get of old. I don't think them Dogs exist anymore since both kennels are out of business and haven't seen one of those IW's since the late 1980's. I always wanted one of those but they cost as much as a new car so they was a rich mans sporting beast. The IW will protect you but unlike other Dogs don't show it unless the person is looking for trouble at that time. Unlike other Dogs they have better control of their inter demons and only let it out when need be. The same with the house pet vision that has a big can of wipe ass them self.

I found one of these dogs on the side of the road, it was very cold and the rain was coming in. I pulled over and went right up to him he just stood there and didn’t shy away one bit. I put him in the back of my car, we went to the spca to scan for a microchip but he didn’t have one, I filled out a found report with the local humane center and posted an ad of Craigslist. The shelter said they were at max capacity so I took him home, not knowing how he would be around my dog or cat. He has been such a good boy, I even found his mom she responded to my ad she said he has gotten out many times before and has been able to come back, I told her he was such a good dog I was just going to keep him. She asked me if I wanted him because she cannot spend time with him. So now he’s mine. I have one short basset hound and one tall Irish wolf hound. He is blonde. I looked up tall scruffy dog breeds and he looks identical to these. Very mellow at home but playful at the park, he is great with my animals. He is not neutered.

If you message her (she has a facebook page) and ask to meet them (next month more than this month because things are hectic) she probably would have no issue with it. Also she isn’t breeding right now but when she does she places puppies with people that have kept in contact and show genuine interest over a period of time not just on a whim or when there are puppies on the ground. I have Bad Wolfs Trip of a Lifetime (Osiris/Siris/Si) because she will probably ask where her name was brought up and she will know Siris’s name mostly by Si.

To see what the reall wolf killer of 16 to 17th century looked like take a look at contemporary paintings, you may be surprised by what you see.
