In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Rhodesian Ridgeback that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Hound Dogs
Weight: 70 to 85 pounds
Height: 24 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years
The first thing people notice about the Rhodesian Ridgeback is usually the characteristic ridge that runs down his spine and gives him his name. The ridge reveals part of his heritage, which is a mix of European hunting dogs and African dogs who had the distinctive ridge. They also notice his strong athleticism, noble carriage, and intelligence in his eyes. The history of the breed only adds to his allure; owners are often asked, "Did they really hunt lions?"
The answer is yes, the Ridgeback was developed in Africa to corner and hold big game prey, such as lions, bears, and boars. Today, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is still used for hunting, and some members of the breed have even adapted to pointing and retrieving. The Rhodesian Ridgeback can also be found competing in various dog sports, including agility, lure coursing, obedience, and tracking, and he's good hiking or jogging companion. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is dignified and reserved toward strangers. With his family, he's a quiet, gentle companion, one who's able and willing to defend his home and people if the need arises.

I have a 9year old female ridgeback. We live in Sofia, Bulgaria. The first year and a half was a bit of a struggle for both of us, until I teach her obedience and following orders. Now shes good as gold. The best companion you can think of. Shes almost everywhere with me. Comes to work with me. My partners accept her in their offices, when we have meetings. Although I am a bit jealous of her! Most of my neighbours know her name, pet her and cuddle her when we meet on the street. And I am known just as Kaias owner! Happy New Year!

A Ridgeback just walked into my house when I was a teenager and owned it. I was eventually able to train it with hand signals. The dog displayed the most incredible physical abilities. Playing with cats like cats play with mice and could jump a six foot fence from a sitting position. Also, she escaped from the animal shelter by prying the metal cage open. They couldn't believe it. After 5 years she left the way she came. An incredible experience. I still miss her.

Rescued a ridge back at 3 years old that had been in wild with no socialization. Trained her to make eye contact with a treat between my eyes when I called her name. Within 6 months she was the most loyal and enjoyable canine companion. If she felt there was a risk she would stand between me and the entry point and growl low. I’ve had many wonderful big breeds but my Izzy was my favorite by far. And my next rescue will definitely be a ridgeback!

Her discription has changed that she can't be in a house with small children or other dogs. Whereas before they were looking for a family home. But she'd be the first dog I'd ever have.. And much as I think I can do the training Im not sure I can guarentee 2 two hour walks a day.

I really get what you mean. Once upon a time I had a romance with a man who had an oversized male Ridgeback. I guess you could say that I came for the man and stayed for the dog. We 3 would take long hike /walks through a canyon not too far from where they lived. One day the dog was walking slowly and I teased him a bit "why are we a slow poke today, Himsa"? Hours later, lying with him on the floor, running my fingertips over his body, found a raised knot in his big beautiful paw. The man called the vet, and we got over there right away. That dog had a foxtail pretty well lodged in there, and had never indicated he was in pain, other than walking more slowly than usual!. The vet expressed surprise that Himsa calmly let him remove the foxtail. Here's the part that really got me; i regretted teasing him earlier and apologised, saying"i can't believe you didn't tell us that your paw hurt out in the canyon. I'm so sorry that I teased you !" I will never forget the way he looked at me!. It was clear that he understood and accepted my apology in a deeply silent, dignified manner, that is hard to describe. After that we really bonded. He would roughouse.with the man, but was remarkably gentle and protective of me.For example I'm an early riser, and he would always get up to join me. When I would go into a different room to meditate he got in the habit of opening the door of the room walking over to where I was sitting in the floor, give me a sort of schnuffle gentle head butt, then walk back to the door, and lie over the threshold of the room, so that his head and shoulders were in the hall, and his back was to me. He would remain like that, guarding me, no matter the amount of time I remained in meditation. It was a deep and wordless communication and understanding that I've never forgotten.

My ridgeback is a famous boy he is the best boy around small children and also is so social around other dogs! He is photographed daily, by visitors to our forge, he has a bench outside that he sits on, and doesn’t get off as he loves to sun bath. I have trained him since a pup his recall and ability to understand hand signals is amazing. You don’t have to speak to him for he understands the commands by hand jesters. Also he will inform me as when he needs a wee or he needs food he will speak to me when he wants something! A very special breed in deed. He will also only bark when someone comes to our gate to inform us that someone is there! He doesn’t bark generally for any other reason. They are truly a great family dog!

I remember as a kid my dad, brother, and I visited my aunt and uncle on their ranch. There was a fence around their house, and I remember us driving up the long shell road to the house, getting out and walking through that gate, my dad closing it, and there between us and the house was Red, about a 90 pound male RR. Scariest damn dog encounter I've ever had, and the absolute only time I ever saw my dad hesitate. It was like that dog's gaze, physicality, and presence just dominated the whole area. He was the BAMF you had to go through. I heard my dad tell the story some years after, and he said that we were too far to get back through the gate, so he just said, "Come on here, Red" and evidently passed the test. I've had GSDs, and I think RRs are the best guard dogs and ranch dogs that I know of. Much respect.

Just got a male Rhodesian about a week ago, i whole heartedly advise anybody thinking about choosing to make one part of their family to do so.. Just as long as you are willing to put in the time and energy they are worth every second of it. Having two other female dogs (which are both very energetic) his first week with us demanded far more on my behalf than the other two pups combined. Thankfully we managed to be with him 24/7 which was crucial, can't imagine what our house would look like had we left alone for even an hour. Having said that, he is incredibly smart and learns very fast and every day is easier than the last. More importantly, really looking forward to start taking him on walks and ultimately hikes.

I have a half lab half ridgeback rescue. She has nearly all these traits but was very easy train since she takes on the submissive nature of the lab. She never runs away, I have her not a leash outside all the time without issue. And her frame is slightly smaller so too but with the powerful rear lab legs so I see her fly up the five stairs from ground to deck all the time. The weird thing is she can sleep all day but yet have all the energy you would want if stimulated. Very gentle and protective too. She loves to howl everyday not much of a barker. She loves when you pet the ridge and belly at the same time. I never had a more enjoyable dog.

It is NOT called a Rhodesian Ridgeback because it was bred in South Africa! It was bred in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) hence the name. The first club was formed in 1922 so we are celebrating our centennial this year.

Best breed ever. Hands down no competition. My ridgeback Ramses was the best. He was Texas bred and weighed 125lbs. No fat strong as an ox and was so fast that when he ran by you you felts the wind. And they are by far the best looking big dog breed.

My sister got her Ex a dog… He said I don’t want a male dog without is manhood. Well all dogs from the shelter are fixed!!??! What was she going to do she still wanted this dog to have a forever home like he so deserved. He was a beautiful red wheaton color, great with kids, women and other dogs. Men especially ones with hates and raised voices put him on edge. That’s fine. It’s just my mom and I at home now tat my sister was living with her boyfriend who didn’t want this amazing, well trained dog. He sat, laid, stayed, waited to dig into his bowl of food until you said. He was very well mannered no jumping but nobody could wear a hat. He nearly bit my sisters friends hand but then he took his hat off and they were jumping and playing fetch and tug of war with a rope with respect for space for hands. AMAZING DOG!! He was a 3 yr old Rhodesian ridgeback! We didn’t even know what kind of dog that was. Never heard of it. But he was ours. One day my mom had to sale our 1yr old truck because she had divorced and couldn’t afford house payments and car payments. So she put it in the paper, a gentlemen called arranged to come see the vehicle later that afternoon. Mom was the only one home she met the gentleman in the driveway after opening the garage and walking out. They discussed a few things and then they needed the tittle and the pen from on the countertop because he had a few questions the title could answer as well. She went to go get the paper, the gentleman followed. She was alone with the guy…. He put a hand on either side of her hips pinning her against the countertop. It was obvious he wasn’t there to just see the truck!!!! She thought fast reached back and slid the sliding glass door to our backyard open, the guy had a hat on but also Thor the Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescuer could feel the tension in the air and knew the man had to go and he chased him right out the garage. Thor stayed with mom in the garage as she pressed the button and prayed the man didn’t turn back! Needless to say we didn’t sell the truck that day. My stories seem confusing because I type on tiny phone and cannot go back and read much and see how it flows. I can only see/read a paragraph then the next and next. I have the worst short term memory with my seizures. Sorry if it didn’t make sense. God Bless Thor and may his soul Rest In Peace. He died of liver failure. He was sick 2 days the first confirmed his diagnosis the second we took our time with him on pain medication so we could tell him how much he meant to us. My sister even drove 3 hrs to come home and be with him as the Vet gave him a shot of medicine to send him to heaven. Who knew a rescue dog for someone else would bring an entire family such joy and security. Also a breed of dog we’d never heard of. I’ve seen 2 in real life since. Washington state USA.

I still need to get DNA however I have rescued what appears to be a Ridgeback/Plott hound mix. All characteristics point to these two. I amazed of how smart, loyal, trainable and playful. He is. I am amazed that when my boys comes home he knows who they are before they hit the door. If they have someone with them he's high alert from a sleep. If its them he continues to sleep. Runs and socializes with other dogs well. Loves pit bulls and other Ridgeback. He is a socializer that loves to track when in the forest or by the river. My best friend.

I have a Ridgeback/ pit x. He basically looks like a RR but with smaller ears and a wider chest. He is insanely athletic and instinctual. I had gotten a call from a rescue group telling me, There is a dog at the city pound who's been there for 6 months, in the corner, tail tucked and shaking the whole time and could I go temperament test him and pull him. It was the day Eddie Van Halen died, and was pretty much all the talk on the radio as I drove there. I walked up to his kennel and sure enough, he was in the corner. I entered with a loop leash and gradually worked my way toward him. His head stayed low so I held out the leash under his nose. He took a smell but never looked up. I slipped the noose over and stood up to move forward. The open door was right there but he was still hesitant. I put pressure on the leash and he started to move, slunked low and cautious. As his head passed through the open door, he looked both ways, took a step and just sprung up and started running in circles around me. As I went to get him in the car he pulled out of the leash and started running around the lot and then towards the open gate. So I started running the other way and play bowing at him. He chased me over to the car and I slipped the leash back on. When we got in the car and started it, there was more talk about Van Halen. I said, that's a good name for you, Eddie. I Brought Eddie back to the shelter and he quickly became my favorite dog. Aside from being athletic and fun he is super quirky. He would do different habits every day. One day he'd take his ball, put it on the frame of the Adirondack chair thing, it would roll under and off the other side and he'd trot around, bring it back and do it again... all day. The next day he'd walk around the picnic table, stop in front of me , wait until I scratched his head, then he'd walk around again, get a scratch... all day. The day came and he was adopted right at the beginning of lockdown. He never dug, but in his new home he dug through the crate floor, the carpet and into the sub floor. The guy tried putting him in the bathroom. So he dug through the door and had a party. He would counter surf, react to small dogs and poop in the house.... The guy played rough with him like a buddy but then expected him to understand what he meant with out teaching him when he was serious and he would get really frustrated. Within a few months, Eddie was returned. He was his old self, no issues, just a weirdo. While he was gone my male had passed away, So I decided I couldn't let Eddie go again and I adopted him. I never saw any of the issues of his previous adopter, except he tried to take pizza off the counter once, but never since. He comes to work with me every day. He has been so good with other dogs that have social issues. Generally he has one speed... Play. But if confronted by an aggressive dog he doesn't react for at least 10 seconds if he's going to. He tells me a lot. If it's serious he'll react, If it's an insecure stand offish or fearful dog, he wont react. He will pee near them and ignore them and once they settle he gives reassuring signals and gains their trust. Other than that he's all play and generally a dog that other dogs like to be around. For my work he's the perfect dog and for me he is my best friend and the best dog I've ever had, and technically, I've had thousands. Clearly I could go on about him. He has his own Tshirt for corn sake. It's hard to believe he was that scared dog in the corner. Whatever traumatized him, he got over it fast, and now he helps dogs to keep them from ending up where he was. Those are the 2 sides of a RR. If you give them what they need they are the best dogs, but if you can't you should re think your choice.

My 5 eventually chased the pack away with no harm to any dogs😁. I have chickens and goats and they all exist together, actually, some of the mean chickens chase them 🤣🤣 Strangers dont come near my home at all without them knowing and warning the visitors. We recently rescued one. Likely not even a year old. We thought he was a Lab (and likely has some Lab in him), but his looks and other behaviors are having us believe he is a Ridgeback. No lie about escaping. We have a six foot fence and he has jumped it several times. No harm done. Just heard other dogs being walked and when I find him, he has not been aggressive at all with the other dogs. I just worry about him jumping into someone else's yard. He's been staying in the yard, untethered for months, but with nicer weather and more activity on the other side of the fence, we have to keep him leashed now at all times, even in our own yard. Super friendly, but also super energetic. Great companion, but you have to keep an eye on him at all times.
