Iris van Herpen unveils an alluring collection inspired by Aquatic Architecture and Bionic
Innovations that offers a glimpse into the future.
Paris Haute Couture ~ Drawing inspiration from the future of floating cities and the concept of bionic design, this pioneering collection reflects a vision where humans inhabit both land and offshore environments. To envision a future where our built environment becomes a natural extension of the vast aquatic landscapes, creating a harmonious coexistence between humanity and the world's oceans.
Van Herpen's creative journey began with the visionary ideas of Jacques Rougerie, a French
Architect and Oceanographer, known as the ‘Architect of the Sea’. Rougerie's work bridges the
gap between scientific exploration and architectural innovation, offering a deeper understanding
of the intricate relationship between the oceans and our built environment. His designs of
underwater habitats and floating laboratories, informed by his expertise as a marine biologist
and architect, have inspired van Herpen's exploration of aquatic urbanism.
Other looks of the collection are influenced by the revolutionary World’s First Floating City,
‘Oceanix’ that is currently being built in South Korea. As the first large manifestation of this new
form of waterborne urbanism, designed by starchitect Bjarke Ingels, Oceanix integrates zero
waste and circular systems, closed-loop water systems, net-zero energy, and coastal habitat
regeneration. This new generation of architects show a radical shift in urban planning and a blueprint for resilient cities of the future.
Driven by R&D, the collection materializes the principles of parametric architecture that is known
for its fluidity, fragmentation, and shifting patterns. The designs dynamic energy is evident in the explosive patterns of light and shadow that vibrate around the body, the fractal forms, geodesic voids, and distorted perspectives that redefine fashion's traditional boundaries.
Van Herpen draws from the aquatic urbanism movement by focusing on the physiological,
behavioral, and structural adaptations of biological organisms to create new Couture techniques
that blur the boundaries between fashion and floating architecture. Each look was therefor digitally modeled before the physical draping process started.
The cutting-edge ’Biophilic’ technique is developed from lasercutting architectural lineworks that
are bonded together to serve as molds, in which a marble-textured silicone is injected with syringes into the fine lasercut outlines. At the same time abalone-shell flakes are inlaid by hand
into gradients before the silicone is settling. After settling, a final transparent layer of silicone is
injected to enhance the iridescent shell shards gracefully.
The daring ‘Oceanix’ technique is developed to paint bursting patterns in space. These graphic
polygon patterns explode skillfully from order to chaos through the movement of the body, as
the polygons are deconstructed in air by the models moving. Fine fiberglass rods are carefully
balanced to distribute an exact amount of weight and vibration into the dissected geodesic
bursts, creating an interplay of fluidity and fragmentation.
The harmonious color palette of this season combines graphic contrasts of white and blacks
that are highlighted with metallic silver, bronze and gold detailing. An oceanic mood is created
through soft tones of mint-green that are mixed with abalone-blue, turquoise and pearlescent
shell shades.
The ARCHITECTONICS collection dares to imagine humanity’s next frontier: a world with
waterborne urbanism that harmonizes with marine ecosystems.
Global concerns grow as 90 percent of large cities worldwide are vulnerable to rising sea levels,
and over 410 million people are predicted to be at risk.
This season Van Herpen's designs draw attention to the visionary ideas of Oceanix, the world’s
first floating city and the important new generation of architects that show us the ingenuity and
desirability of waterborne architecture. Challenging our conventional notion of living spaces,
each design encapsulates the duality of our existence, where land and water intertwine to see a
future where we seamlessly inhabit both realms.

I agree with the work being stunning. There is a difference between physical reality versus digitally created copies though. I'm sure recreating her work in the real physical world would be extremely difficult for people to copy.
Not since McQueen has there been a designer that itches the exact spot Iris does. Stunning. The nods to nature, the bold shapes, the intricate cuts, the theatrical nature of it all. Unreal perfection.

@LVXMagick: Pick the dress you want, decide what you might want different, then get some cheap fabric, like unbleached muslin, and try putting your vision together, piece by piece. Use long, loose stitches so you can pull them out to make changes. You might want to find a dress pattern that fits you as similar as possible to your vision. Use it for size reference. Pretty soon, trial & error, you will have your own dress! YOU 6:18 CAN DO IT!

Iris van Herpen's latest fashion collection is stunning. I love her work. The headpiece at 1:17 is like if the borg was a collection of artists collaborating to make fashion together. I love the diversity of the models too. It makes each piece even more vibrant. Just my favorite designer. These are lovely and inspiring. I'd love to figure out how to make some of these headpieces and also the bouncy wire pieces. It's all just so cool.

i love how women's haute couture has embraced volume and sculptural qualities over the last few years.
Her designs look otherworldly yet they also have a contemporary take on nature that exists in ours. The models did exceptional in displaying the movement and flow of her designs!

Love this collection so much, especially the last dress must be so amazingly breathtaking in real live. Love also, that the models aren't just some hangers for the clothing but are able to breath live into the clothing.

The big brands have run out of things to say and young designers to steal from.....there's a lot of stories to be told but they're too self serving and naive...and here comes Iris....giving us LIFE...breathing energy...we are thankful. The world is a better place cos of Van Herpen.❤

@@teddyramagole1904It’s interesting because there are motifs and concepts clearly recognizable from past shows but they are elevated every time and expanded on. I can’t ever knock her for revisiting older ideas because the ideas are so good. It doesn’t feel lazy and recycled, it feels considered. When she reintroduces them it’s to continue the conversation, not repeat it.
Music was on point…. The collection is as always technique et beyond couture.

Iris van Herpen is pretty much the only of the wearable-art fashion designers who makes things that are actually beautiful and flattering instead of just looking stupid or weird. Everything she does is there to build on the foundation of the natural shape of the body and to evoke inspiration from the living world. Lovely work.
