Iris van Herpen ~ Roots of Rebirth

Ойын-сауық

Iris van Herpen shows her latest collection ‘Roots of Rebirth’ during Paris Haute Couture Week on January 25th 2021.
~
During such rarefied
times, the designer explores a symbiosis of high technology and the artisanal craftsmanship of couture, through a collection that references
the intricacy of fungi and the entanglement of life that breathes beneath our feet. Through ‘Roots of Rebirth’, Van Herpen notions towards the
miraculous lacery of interconnectedness from the natural ‘wood wide web,’ weaving a dialogue between the terrestrial and the underworld.
The work of Iris van Herpen is often described as ethereal and transcendental; a chimeric exposition, radiating shapes that reference the
relationship between the human body and the natural world. This season, the Dutch designer explores the rich, yet deeply fragile
interconnectedness of an unfamiliar world, the enigmatic fungi empire and the life-bearing fine threads of mycelium. The collection details the
extraordinary existence of this winding ‘fabric of life,’ the marvelling world of undergrowth tapestry. In reference
to the book penned by
scientist Merlin Sheldrake, ‘Entangled Life’ notes that ‘fungi is the ecological connective tissue, the living seam by which much of the world is
stitched into relation.

“Thinking about fungi makes the world look different. These astonishing organisms challenge our animal imaginations and
make questions of many of our well-worn concepts, from individuality to intelligence.”
- Merlin Sheldrake
‘Roots of Rebirth’ extends its own branch, an invitation to a sequence of 21 looks inspired by roots and spores. During the show, the models
seem to magnetise a living lace of spores with each stride, the entanglement of each garment resembles roots of regeneration. Two looks
embody the 'henosis' technique, in which multiple translucent layers of duchess fabric were dyed in pastel hues, forming a 'mantodea' motif.
An off-white lasercut venation formed by a myriad of hovering fins sprout outwards, radiating each motion into a delicate lacy array of
invisible interconnectedness.
In other creations, hand-embroidered roots surge and symmetrically entwine the body in transformative tones,
from liquid copper to deep shades of burnt umber. Hand-pleated mahogany silk were draped to fan out into hemispheric blooms.
The unseen splendour of each garment echoes fungi activity, in which glass-organza were intricately pleated in an ombré of white to vivid amber, branching out from a hand-embroidered bodice to form fractal networks. A mosaic of fine-edged liquescent gills were 3D embroidered onto expandable lace, lasercut to parametrically reveal fine details of skin between amethyst hued fibre. As fungi maps the skin of the earth, such is also the composition of Van Herpen’s Haute Couture.
In another look, Ocean Plastic® fabric made from upcycled marine debris by Parley for the Oceans was printed and incised into thousands of fine trilateral tessellations, initiating a fragile symbiosis with the skin through seamless gradients in translucency.

Its because the era of star designers ended. Right after McQueen died and John Galliano scandal. If IVH wanna get more reputation outside the industry, she'd need a huge marketing strategy, which is completely opposite of what she is doing. And also the fashion play ground now is all about giant cooporation like LVMH, etc. Small innovative couture house of course cant never compete in term of marketing.

@@janik3213 regardless of which market these brands cater to, all of them create fashion (or like to think they are). All these brands become a part of the overall conversation. But okay, let’s confine our discussion to HC, apples to apples as it were. HC is not really targeting the traditional client anyway - everyone knows the big ones are viewed as marketing exercises. Dior HC is so watered down to appeal to mass market tastes, and is really just done to create an aura of prestige and give a sense of glamour to IGers who flaunt their latest oblique logo bags. Tiktokers might not wear HC but Dior HC certainly caters to this market. The designs are dumbed down enough to relate to mass market tastes - the house doesn’t cater to the traditional couture client who treasures taste and discretion.

@@rm6700 yes exactly, but Dior is a bad example since its main function is to serve as representative marketing and all the shows have been really bland for ages. I still think most houses, even those that only do ready-to-wear, make beautiful clothes, it's just that the market and main focus has shifted over to ready to wear, which is why most haute couture shows are lacking and bland compared to houses like iris van herpen, that only focus on haute couture and have the ressources to do so.

As my eyes trace the designs I feel the energy of the colors and textures flowing around the body as frequencies of light; emotional, spiritual, intuitive, natural... human & divine. As if wrapped by the angels themselves. 😅🤩😍 Thank you Iris and team! 🙏 What a stunning advancement in our evolving abilities to express what is. 💛💚♒💜✨

Couture for reals. Super luxe fabrics, complex construction and divine tailoring. Stunning colors. She is so full of surprises. This is what a very chic, very advanced space alien would design. Gorgeous!

Those SHOEEEEESSS, Puhleaseee 👠👠👠 gosh this is insanity..this is pure surreal. The entire collection is visually superb. Iris van Herpen is the embodiment of the term 'out of this world' thru and thru. The ladies on the runway, for instance, look at them, are they birds? are they aliens in disguise?? are they underwater creatures?? i dont know anymore, but what i do know for sure tho is that they all seem TERRIFIC. Every single one of them. 👑

Ethereal and so beautiful. And Vodianova 😭🙌🏼 But the shoes look like they’re so hard to walk in, which gives an element of awkwardness to each model, and it really screwed with my ability to buy the fantasy.

I think it's the shoes. That's why the walk seems OFF. So happy to see Vodianova. The first Vogue magazine that I was able to touch is the one with her in it. I think the concept is Alice in wonderland, she was young back then and her face is like an angel.

One of the brands that doesn't need aggresive marketing and communications. Her campaigns are far from sophisticated. I believe her innovations what shape her craftmanship. Anyone know does she allocate certain budget for R&D -- Knowing that she builds her collection from fabric study?

what an incredible collection, drawing so intricately from so many otherwise under-appreciated aspects of the natural world. With the cgi resembling ashes I am reminded of the resilient nature of fungi to survive in dark corners, to ride out fires, and to thrive in unexpected places. In this difficult time I think this collection embodies human resilience through a fascinating reconnection with the natural world.
