Iris van Herpen ~ Shift Souls

On January 21st, 2019, Iris van Herpen presented her latest Haute Couture collection, titled 'Shift Souls' at Palais des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
The collection was inspired by early examples of celestial cartography and its representations of mythological and astrological chimera, Van Herpen was particularly taken with "Harmonia Macrocosmica," a star atlas by the German-Dutch cartographer Andreas Cellarius, published in 1600.
With the advances in DNA engineering and the first successful creations of human/anima hybrids called 'Cybrids', the mythological dreams of Humankind since the dawn of civilization are shifting to the canvas of science. While the scientific and ethical implications of 'Cybrids' are still unclear, this collection expresses the fact that this reality is upon us.
"For 'Shift Souls' I looked at the evolution of the human shape, its idealization through time and the hybridization of the female forms within mythology. Specially the imagination and the fluidity within identity change in Japanese mythology gave me the inspiration to explore the deeper meaning of identity and how immaterial and mutable it can become within the current coalescence of our digital bodies” - Iris van Herpen

Iris van Herpen really is a standout in the age where fashion has become so widespread and expansive. What she's doing is not only impressive and unique from the technical side of things, but also their creative aspect. Her work seems very otherworldly and I believe the future of elegant fashion lies on this path. In a sense, you could say fashion is the most art-like of all art, becouse you become part of it. Iris encapsulates that perfectly.

I always imagine how helpless I would be in real life if someone like the model in the purple and blue walked into a room I was in. I suspect I'd go weak-kneed and stare at her like how 5-year-old kids stare at ME when I walk into a room, haha! I would myself suddenly be that 5-year-old, staring without shame because I too just couldn't help myself, LOL, it would be as if I were hypnotised. What a magnificent vision that model is in that spectacular show-stopper of a piece. Wow.

donuts globonuts Yes, please sensei, teach me fashion. Comfortable =/= wearable. Many Iris's dresses are very artistic and perfectly wearable despite not being comfortable. You're wrong anyway. Haute couture was originally the epitome of fashion and hand made craft and quality. It's in the name "haute couture" for goodness' sakes. They were clothing designed to be sold for the most exclusive of clientele. That's embedded in the Chambre Syndicale's rules as well: "- Designs must be made-to-order for private clients, with one or more fittings" The concept of haute couture is still this very same thing if only the collections have become more avant-garde since a few decades ago just like prêt-à-porter. The collections have become sort of catalogue of possibilities where the clients pick and choose what they like. Iris is a bit exceptional in this regard due to the laborious nature of her work, but she is an invitational member after all.

This reminds me so much of marine life: In the beginning, it looks like the upper oceanic layer. The music that hints to air bubbles occassionally rising, those vibrant colors with fin-like/coral-like shapes and I love how they accentuated those looks with minimalistic yet vivid colors on the models' hair... Even those faces which are incorporated in those dresses remind me of organisms that are trying to deceive their predetors or even the opposite way, predetors camouflaging themselves (face cage in that video). As the video proceeds, it gets darker, as if one is entering the deep sea where the sunlight never reaches. The music suddenly shifts from having clear sounds to damped thuds with a lot of echoes, highlighting the vast emptiness in the deep sea. The two light sources are those on the floor and some brighter spots where the models' appearance flashes past you, like a flashlight that managed to catch a marine life's beauty and scary shapes before it got scared away. Some models remind me of jellyfishes with their deadly tentacles, floating around and waiting for their preys. The models are not walking in straight lines anymore, they are seemingly walking in a chaotic yet fluent way, flowing past each other. Towards the end, more and more of the models are standing around, not moving, staring into the void as if their time has stopped, just like marine life in the deep sea. The creatures have no sunlight and rely on sinking minerals and prey for energy and in order to get them, most of those animals just float around with little to no movement, spreading out their deadly fangs/tentacles in the hopes of food. It is as if time has no meaning to them, they are untouched by time but at the same time they appear to be trapped in it; Fixed; Chained. They just "exist" in the darkness... Just like mankind floating around in space, existing and the only thing that has a valid meaning for the universe and thus us is time. Bound by time as long as we managed to understand it better... Until then, we just exist because of time, yet we do not understand it fully.

Incredible. I've been agog and in deep admiration of you and your work for almost 10 years knowing how extraordinary it would be to keep a close eye on your creative journey from there on in. What fun it's been! Breath taking. Oh how I covet your creations. Everything shimmers and moves as the person walks so it looks unpredictable, alien and organic. The human energy seems to be the battery powering the sculpted, living 'clothing'. For me, that's how they never seem to overpower the human wearing your pieces, there's an almost hard to fathom balance between an other-worldly piece of couture and it's otherwise naked human host; it's remarkable and nobody else can achieve this sorcery but you. Even the heavier, more static materials used seem alive, like a second attached being which NEEDS the human body to exist. The effect is not the same as if you did only sculpture, as it's clear that sculpting, designing and cutting this way really comes alive when a human is powering it all. Not just wind and movement is needed, but the energy of the human able to wear such pieces with confidence. Most people trot out the 'science fiction' phrase to describe what you do but to me, so many pieces look like A THOUGHT PROCESS and I feel like I'm looking inside the fire of a human brain at the very point of ignition when beginning to form an idea. Your pieces just remind me of the electric, the alive and the impossible to put into words: qualia. If deeply esoteric and existential things could be incarnated in material form, we'd get Iris Van Herpen. The audience viewing a collection just needs to put the work in and let their memories, imagination and intellect tesselate and then fully engage with the psychedelic, deeply intimate personal offer of revelation which is what magically happens with your creations. They're so outlandishly PRESENT and demanding of my attention, and yet, they inspire me to go inside. To re-envision and feel the abstract elements of a particular memory, like what the weather was like, elements of the natural world which you somehow capture in a bell jar and cast a spell on and turn into a couture piece: "a deserted beach at 7am, or a vibrant evening walk home 11pm cutting through the shortcut of a rocky moonscape-like construction site...the quality of the light, the smells, the undulations and patterns in the landscape". For me, it's a wild trip. Everything is alive and everything is incredible. I want to absorb the entire universe when I view your work. Thank you so much for being who you are.
