One of the best movie scenes I've ever seen the 1st time I watched it. Besides the awesome chereography fighting in a closed space in the elevator, the awesome shots and motions moving around the staircases, it showed the most important value of the character- IP Man as an honourable man: duty and protecting his family (wife) from harm. That's really what gave part 2 so much character depth and amazing movie plot 💯

In M Y lineage, we would N E V E R say that Wing Chun is defensive. That statement is one step above the level of absolute lack of knowledge of the system, which is “Wing Chun is mainly good for health,” which is what ignoramus Ip Chun claimed. For THAT charlatan, yes, Wing Chun is as useful as morning exercise in the park. But back to what YOU said. Understand that in authentic Wing Chun, we don’t wait. If there’s a gap, why let the opponent close it!? In M Y lineage, we go all in, and we never backpedal either.

The problem I have with is how fake it looks. The first movie was great. But ever since they started this ''Wing Tsun vs This, Wing Tsun vs That'' dynamic, these series became cheesy as hell. In no way a man of his stature could block those kicks with such weak blocking guards. Jet Li used to make such movies, and they were not entirely realistic either. But at least, the choreography made characters look strong and it made more sense in those.

The other guy wasn't using actual powerful Muay Thai kicks. He was just doing light tappy kicks, rather than low and high power roundhouses. They could still have Ip Man win, but the Thai fighter should have been doing actual Muay Thai. You can't easily deflect a Muay Thai roundhouse. You have to either get out of the way, or brace yourself to block a massive impact. It's not like the tappy kicks shown here that Ip Man could easily block with one hand. The momentum of a proper Thai roundhouse kick will easily go through a one handed parry attempt.

This is your best chance to counter. Or you brace yourself to block the kick and absorb a massive impact. These kicks are too powerful to be stopped with a one handed parry, and Ip Man can only do so in this fight because the other fighter is clearly throwing light tappy kicks rather than a proper powerful Muay Thai roundhouse. This is an unrealistic fantasy movie fight, not a real example of how to fight a real Muay Thai fighter.

of course not, because what you are used to see is competitors in their own league fighting similarly and leaving room for it. It would not work dealing with a Chinese Martial Arts master as it was mr. IM as he was the one who took the initiative breaking the Thai dynamics, and learn such unusual for him style while slowing his response much limited to just interrupt him. Like if he was taking a test on him. A few times he got closer, awaking his respect for the Thai fighter style, but he was never in any danger as anyone can notice. It was a progression to see the best of the Thai that he could bring forward. He could have done him faster earlier, or harm him badly. But I think there is a symbolic intent in the filmed scene, in taking the foreign thug down the stairs instead of allowing him in the elevator, too social company for his uncouth youth.

Love every single one of these films, the fight choreography is unreal combining close, distant, striking, evade, masterpieces every one of them, what I like is the reality of how this style would be effective in a street style fight or in a bar were you don't always have distance and space not that you should be fighting but in close quarters with no space this style excels

Yes, it is actually very effective, the Wing Chun boxing style, in a street fight, if the user is proficient. I also think that the style against Mike Tyson who fights almost without form since he's so aggressive, relying on the specialised technique of Wing Chun, although effective might not be the best idea, and also due to weight class difference. Perhaps a mixed-form or freestyle martial arts that uses just fists and kicks would be better to neutralise iron mike. It is certainly doable but perhaps by a grandmaster. We know Donnie can brawl and duel with his array of knowledge on mixed martial arts

@@bumenjoyer Well, keyboard warrior, not everything is safety first and a whole set made from dummy tile. Sometimes there is a time crunch with producers barking down your neck. Protective equipment is not always up for the task either. People get hurt, period. Glad I don't work with a walking opinion like you though, small miracles.

In the actual shooting scene the Thai fighter almost hit her face once and he apologized but she went out crying like a little kid saying something in their language. It was funny. There is some youtube video about that too :)

That is NOT a Muay Thai master. Thai boxing is thee superior martial art. The best striking form there is. Wing chun was developed by a woman to defend against men attempting to use an opponents weight/size against them as leverage. Thai boxing is an ACTUAL combat sport. It pours it on the entire time, aggressive striking pressure always on. It the one art that lines up perfectly with Wing Chun, to break through a wing chun defense.
