It's the most heartbreaking scene of the movie. He's been very gentle and merciful for every opponent before that scene, always knowing when is enough, knowing where to stop. It's the only scene he never stopped his punches against someone below his level.

I agree. From the beginning they potray him as an ideal man who no one can beat, then throw him into a situation out of his control. This scene is cathartic but at the same time very depressing because of the realisation that even after beating 10 men, what did he really change? . Brilliant piece of contrast.

Someone else pointed this out already, but notice how his sleeves are already rolled up. Throughout the movie, he started every fight up to this point with sleeves unrolled, rolling them up when he got serious. Them being rolled up before the fight even began symbolized he walked onto that mat intending to lay some people out.

This fight remains one of the more unique moments in the Ip Man series simply because of the context. He's not fighting for the honor of his dojo, his disciples, or Chinese martial arts as a whole. Instead, he's focused on vengeance. With his friend already dead and with everything to gain with staying low-key, he not only called out this injustice in an uncharacteristically desperate tone, he willingly displayed his full powers in a violent fashion. These black belts had no say whether or not Liu was to be shot. They were only there to spar, not kill a man. But that didn't matter for Master Ip at the time. He needed to answer brutality with brutality. Just for those officers to know that their abusive and barbaric ways don't even come close to what he can do.

I swear, Ip Man (2008) is a straightforward film but if you look at how the parts help define and strengthen each other, it just makes the film that much better. Like this scene. We all remember it because it had become a recurring theme throughout the series but the context of the before and after of this scene are also amazing. Before this, Ip Man was already exhausted, underfed and hadn't practiced Wing Chun in so long due to WWII happening around him. He heard the death of one friend and saw the death of another right in front of his eyes. It pushed him over the edge. He fought 10 men and despite not being at his full strength, we are still terrified. Beforehand, he only fought to defend himself with no intent to maim or hurt. For the first time in the movie, we see a small glimpse of the raw power of martial arts. No bars held and no filter. After this, even after seeking vengeance, he was saddened. His friends were still gone but even moreso, he reflected on how useless he felt. He was a master, sure but what was the benefit? He used it to hurt people. After the fight, he only ever saw it as that: something that can hurt others. He tried justifying it to himself before that it was just something he took an interest in and as a way to teach a specific few but now he just viewed it as a weapon to kill. It wasn't after he helped teach others to defend themselves using Wing Chun that he realizes it CAN be used to help others. The main lesson being that in life, you are given gifts. They can either be used as tools to build or weapons to destroy. What it is depends on you. Which is what he told Master Jin at the start of the movie. It's not the style you practice. It's you. EDIT: One more thing I'd like to add to my analysis is that after he beats the 10 black belts, his hands are bloodied and injured. Of course, in real life, it really is like that but the filmmakers decided to focus on it for a thematic reason. It shows that Ip Man hurts himself when he hurts others. It's shown that he never sets out to hurt anyone intentionally but he was pushed over the edge in this scene. That feeling of hurt compounded with his feeling of uselessness contributed to the depression he felt afterward. It's such a minor detail but manages to get across a lot of his character

Such an emotional scene honestly. Yes it’s cool fight too, but the story leading up to it makes it so much better. The whole first half of the movie ip man was a humble, calm master who barely wanted to duel or train anyone. He did fight a few people but he never took it that serious because he knew he was better than them and it was just sparring to him really. Even when his family lost everything due to the Japanese invasion he was still positive and peaceful. It was only when his friends got killed did he go all out. It’s such a powerful scene even tho it lacks a lot of dialogue

I love this fight scene as a standalone masterpiece of action cinema, but in the context of the whole movie it works even better. Throughout the movie he was always shown as exceedingly polite, and would only use the bare minimum force needed. Even when thugs were beating his village up and insulting his town, him, and his family, he still tried to be courteous, avoid conflict, and go easy on him. But this scene marks the turning point where that emotional and physical restraint is completely and utterly gone and swapped for pure bloodlust, showing just how heinous the situation that the antagonists are putting him, his friends, and his people through. Even after this fight, while we never see him this brutal again for the rest of the movie and series, we see how in the rest of the film he really feels like a changed person, going for the quickest way to literally knock his opponents out.

This scene is masterpiece, this prove that master yip is still human who has an anger and rage. In the entire franchise he give us a big bold message that kungfu isn't a way of violent. Yet this scene is exceptional, he broke his role by fighting with meant to 'kill' people. He broke the arms and legs of his opponent without hesitation.

Probably because he just took down 10 Black Belts by himself. They probably got up as a cautionary measure so he doesn’t try anything considering he’s a threat to them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but i believe this is the one of the only times Ip Man goes full on offence with his Wing Chun from the very beginning. In most of his other fights, we always begins in defensive and normally stays in defensive until pushed to offence by more competent opponents and when he finally did, the fights were practically over. Seeing him go full offence from the very beginning in complete fury...the poor guys didn't stand a chance.

I like how they show the finishing blows to all 10 fighters 1 - 1:53 Stepped on Neck 2 - 1:58 Punches to face and broken arm 3 - 2:05 Broken Leg 4 - 2:13 Wing Chun Beat down 5 - 2:24 Knee to face/neck and twisted neck 6 - 2:32 Death by Back Massage (Broken back/neck) 7 - 2:41 Punch to Throat? (This one is the most unclear) 8 - 2:44 Neck Punch/Chop 9 - 2:48 Wing Chun Beat down 10 - 3:09 Repeated punches to face. Drops head on ground.

The attention to detail they pay is amazing, half way teough the fightyou can see his knucles bruised and clearly they hurt so he switches to elbows, blocking and using locks more than punching.

One of my favorite action sequences in film, and to think, all this is after he hasn't even practiced martial arts for quite some time. He had to stop because his family needed to conserve their food, and he was out looking for work... and also, it's not just 10 men but specifically 10 blackbelts lol.
