Check out Ip Man The Legend is Born. There's a scene where a young Ip Man goes into a drug store and the elderly manager beats him (played by irl Ip Man's son Ip Chun). He said when you practice with someone you reserve the strength used but not the skill.

i was interpreting that too like if he kid in this scene thinks boxing is the only way to go basically full contact than if ip man's moves all landed this kid would've been dead 5 times over already. so ip man obviously in the movies his sparring has always been not full contact and he wins by points. it's hilarious too.

It was quite strategic of him to stop them from taking off their jackets and let them finish anyway. I'm sure he knows he would be in great if not complete disadvantage if he couldn't strike first or have 3 all on his flanks each. He actually got close to them right before they were ready without them knowing it and that was the element of surprise he needed to strike before any of them could secure an advantagous position against him.

because of how kung fu was popular in china, shams masquerading as teachers were as abundant as cheap knockoffs. As well you can lie about your skills with words, you cant lie about your skills with actions nearly as easy. A lot of the "secret old masters" about making students do their menial labor found their rebound when students legitimately questioning the competence of their teachers. Because you were paying for tuition, you had a right to know if you were getting what your money was worth.

I love the fact that he gives these guys SO many chances in the fights and they don't even know it. He could have dealt serious damage and chose not to. A true Master of his art.

what i love from this scene is that they made ip man can sneak in many punches to aliang at the first time they fought, but decided not to and just shuffling his hand around like a warning. The director has good sense!

I fuggin' love this scene! After showing the student twice that he had the upper hand & beat him without actually hurting him, the student disrespects IP Man claiming he didn't know what he was doing & charges in for a hit. With a straight shot to the nose, IP Man says, 'Do you know now?' That was awesome...

It's even more humbling when you stop and realize that the first fight was basically a free lesson. In most of Ip Man's fights (Barring the "Give me 10" scene from the first film), he holds back, he telegraphs his attacks showing "I could end this fight here; here; here; this way and here." but always restrains himself. These are Sparring matches, not fights to the death. The scenes where Donnie Yen fully flexes in this role and "Lets loose" are some of my favorite martial arts scenes in Cinema, hands down not just for the brutality but for how clinical he is with his violence. He's not even considering the pain he's inflicting, he's just going through the emotions to end the fight as quickly and efficiently as (violently) possible to make sure his opponent won't get back up.

I love how the quality of cinematic martial arts choreography is so flawless when performed by actors who are true martial artists. Very talented and who have studied for a long time. Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Zhang Ziyi, Scott Adkins, Bruce Lee, Sammo Hung, Chow Yun Fat, Jason Statham, Michelle Yeoh etc
