Donnie Yen reminds me of the young man who performed brain surgery on my mother. Calm, a man of few words. Polite but focused and incharge of the moment. He was a young man who was the head of faculty of neural surgery at a university and he took on my mother's rare case to instruct young students in the medical field. He saved my mother's life 30 years ago and she enjoys life today.

This is my fave scene in the movie, because it is so beautifully choreography like a game of chess and a dance, like rhythmic poetry vs bursts of gunfire-quick verbal rap. There is a deeper meaning of the styles that correlates to the masters temperaments and their "perception" of Wing Chun. So, that is very insightful of you to be able to spot Master Zhuang's attitude, which is more humble and gentle, because BaGuaZhang's philosophy is about that, and gathering forces for defense and attack -- notice how he would rally the other masters to go first, and also ask if Master "dick" Luo is okay! (master Luo seriously disliked Ip Man, so it is natural Master Zhang would tell Master Luo to go head on, because that is how you neutralize 2 opposing forces, and this table-battle was stirred up by Master Luo in the first place) So, yes, it has to do with the deeper meaning in the philosophy of the styles that each of the masters practice, And Master Zhang was kinda pressured into the fight, while he preferred to just co-exist. If anything, his heart really isn't in the fight but is forced to do so, because of the fear of "losing face". As for Master Hung's Hung Gah Fists (incorporating Tiger Claw) are aggressive, forms preference is attack and alot of external force used aim is to capture and dominate -- and we can see Master Hung's Alpha Male attitude. Master Zhang is a Bagua Palm master -- so it is about Internal energy and Balance with odd-angled attacks, that Ip Man had a hard time blocking, notice how Ip Man keeps tilting from side to side to receive and block the Bagua attacks because Wing Chun attacks and blocks are always linear as the form is called "shouzhong" - guarding the center -- beautiful to watch -- But the truth is that the movie is trying to showcase WingChun, if not Philosophical/Internal Energy duel-wise Taichi&Bagua are the 2 penultimate forms, but they aren't necessarily overtly aggressive like Xing Yi or Hung Gah. The philosophy of Bagua is like TaiChi is more aligned with the "be like water", and Wing Chun's thoughtful style is originated by a Chinese Buddhist Nun, and taught to her female disciple named "Wing Chun" -- the style favours "unassumed"ness, low-key but effective strikes, using your attacker's energy to enhance your own when you can ( mostly center of gravity shifts -- see how ip man always ground the 2 masters), it does not have beautiful flourishes and tracery of lines of forces but it is direct short bursts -- which is why it is spectacular when choreographed with the likes of Hung Gar and Xingyi. Bagua would be a play of gathering chi in the air (gaining momentum before strike vs muscular explosive force) and can be very devastating, like the Yin-Yang symbol, it has 2 sides, Yin and Yang of both palms and fists, and it seems Master Zhang here is more of the Yin palms -- you can the actor knows his forms because of his foot work, the cross legged spins to generate momentum for his palm-edge strikes, the versatility in his vertical movement and even his krav-magra style ensnarement before Ip Man threw him down and voila-- LOCK MASTER ZHUANG'S LEGS BECAUSE IP MAN CAN TELL HOW THE FORCE FROM HIS FOOTWORK CAN GENERATE FORCES FOR HIS PALM ATTACKS TOWARDS HIM-- and delivered the punches, and that ended the fight, so, it shows Ip Man is able to attack in a strategic and very astute and wise manner. . But at the end of it all, it is about strategy, strength and speed, seasoned fighting experience, talent and brutality of the Fighter, not the School of Martial Arts -- but One of the wasted opportunity here is the White Crane candidate did not get to fight, i'd like to see the Shaolin 5 elemental form of White Crane style which is "purely defensive" goes against the female-oriented style of WingChun. Please watch it again; i believe you can spot their moves and countermoves better now and spot the reasoning of their methods! Enjoy!

I love how the way Ip Man approaches the table matches his character. He jumps to a waist height table so effortlessly and so softly that it barely moves the table despite the actual amount of force required to jump that high normally. Despite it being the least flashy of the methods to get onto the the tabletop, I argue it was the most impressive and really shows the level and character that Donnie Yen was portraying. He didn't need to jump on chair legs and fly through the air, he just jumped up with a combination of power and grace; it perfectly fits the character.

@@iwishiwasthomasshelbyI tried to look for CGI articles explaining this scene but haven't found anything indicating the film had CGI at all. The most we can assume from this scene at a glance is the use of wire tricks. I found this on Wikipedia, which earned him respect from me. "The film's martial arts sequences were choreographed by Sammo Hung, who also worked on the choreography for the first film. Prior to principal photography, Hung had undergone a major cardiac surgery. When he returned to the set, his dramatic scenes in the film were filmed first, with his fight sequences being filmed last. Hung performed his own stunts in the film, which led to him receiving several injuries during filming."

What I think still amazes me about this fight is the fact that even to this day, Master Hong is the only true equal to Ip Man we've ever seen. It was only ever due to his age and illness that he lost to Twister, otherwise he might have dealt with him even better than Ip Man did... And ultimately, that's what makes Ip Man's victory against Twister all the sweeter; He didn't prove himself 'better' than Master Hong. He simply proved himself to be his successor, the one to carry forth the flaming torch of his spirit and passion for martial arts.

My favorite scene is right after Ip Man leaves. Hung sits down and asks for medicine and stares at where Ip Man used to be with a look of disbelief while he appears to be suffering from a minor bout of asthma. Ip is probably one of the only people in a long time that gave him that much of a challenge. It reminds me of the scene from Rocky IV, where Drago says "He's not human. He is like a piece of iron." except his acting was so good, he didn't need words.

Yes, it was a lovely little exchange that highlighted the intricacies and nuances of human language. The first time Master Luo says it, he's basically doing it to save face after getting his ass absolutely handed to him. The second time, it's an between-the-lines warning to his friend that Ip Man is REALLY good and that Master Cheng/Zhang needs to be careful. Two identical sentences that carry completely different meanings. It's a bit like the "Just like in Havana" line from Captain Marvel, which changes meaning and impact like 3 times throughout the film.

one of the big things in this film is the emphasis on manners, etiquette and respect between those fighting the other. there is grace and dignity - see how ip man does not actually injure the men and stop short, showing just enough to let them know what he can do. he says 'thank you for going easy on me'. this brings stark contrast to the english boxers rudeness, brutality and lack of respect. when he kills the master in the fight it is the biggest insult- this would not have happened between two martial artists.

I love how on three different times master Zhang slow turns his back to Master Ip, and Master Ip is nice enough not to throttle him when he does. Knowing what I know I'm sure this technique was probably an intentional baited move by Zhang, to lure an opponent into attacking. And Ip Man doesn't fall for it. However I'm pretty confidant that Master Ip could have struck him and countered any counter Zhang had in store.
