Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Sweet Red Bean Dessert Recipe (紅豆沙)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This time I wanted to try making a sweet red bean soup dessert using my Instant Pot IP-DUO60 7-in-1 Multi-Functional Pressure Cooker. I love this dessert because you can use the beans in many ways. But I always forget to soak the beans and hate babysitting them over the stove. And if they boil over, the cleanup is annoying.
I was ecstatic when I was able to make this without soaking the beans and only had to put the beans and the water into the pot and press a button. It came out great. The only thing is you might want to use 2 sticks of brown sugar for a sweeter flavor. I only used 1 stick because I'm trying to cut back on my sugar intake. That way, I can continue to eat my desserts and not worry as much about my sugar being high :).
Here are the ingredients I used:
1 cup of dried red beans, rinsed
1 stick of brown sugar, more to taste
3 cups of water
Optional: For a more traditional Asian recipe, add a piece of dried orange peel (陳皮)
I'm making these videos so I can remind myself how I made the recipe. I figure I'm going to try everything and forget what I did previously. I hope they help you as well.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Instant Pot. I just wanted to share my thoughts and tips with everyone.

Thank you so much for your video. The only change I did was put the IP on sautée mode when it was time to add the brown sugar. It took about 2 mins for the soup to start bubbling and the sugar melted in about 5 mins.

Thank you very much for posting this. Its one of my favorite childhood Chinese desserts. I made it for Chinese/lunar new year this year 2020. Although, I didn’t put enough sugar, but that’s OK. Next time. Happy lunar new year!

Great video. I love the way you made the red beans. I have to watch my sugar intake so I put the sugar after I dish it out. But thanks for sharing your video. And I subscribed to your channel as I want to cook with the IP more.

One suggestion is you could break up brown sugar stick to smaller blocks, it will dissolve much faster. Good job,

How come only 5 min showing on my IP when I push the bean/chili mode, instead of 30 min?

If you want to cut down on sugar try using a monk fruit sweetener like Lakanto. I use it in cooking and it is fantastic. Love your video. Will have to try your recipe. Keep the videos coming.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know about this type of sweetener. My mom's sugar is high so we've been cutting back. Will give this a try when I get a chance.

How many servings does one cup of beans yield? Also have you tried adding tapioca pearls as restaurants do? I'm trying to figure when the pearls would be added.

+Hrairoo555 I have not tried putting the tapioca. I'm afraid they might clump together in the pressure cooker. Let me know how it goes if you try it.

I had found a tapioca pudding recipe which said to pressure cook for 9 minutes. So I threw the tapioca in after quick releasing (instead of NPRing) the red beans, and hi-pressured it for another 9 minutes, then letting it NPR for 10 minutes. It didn't clump! But unfortunately the tapioca dissolved away! I was told next time just make the tapioca on the stove and just add to the red beans when done.

+Daisy Lin Hello! I'm glad you like the video. It really depends on your preference. I don't make it as sweet as you would probably get at a restaurant. The sugar is added at the end so you can adjust the sweetness. I would say start with 1/4 cup. Use the saute function to heat up the beans if the sugar needs to melt. No need to put the lid on. Just give it a stir. And remember to turn it off after a few minutes so you don't overcook the beans. Enjoy!

DON’T pressure cook the beans WITH the brown sugar. It taste weird, because the sugar ends up all in the bean. And taste bland when you put it in your mouth. Just follow Kewty’s recipe.

How come you are writing Chinese in the title? If the bean is still intact, it is not quite 紅豆沙yet. Wonder how much longer it takes to achieve that.
