Infamous Graves Down Under | Episode 1 | The Razor Gangs

“G’day folks, welcome to my channel. However unusual it seems, it’s actually quite relaxing to walk around cemeteries taking in the history of their residents as well as the beautiful landscapes and majestic old graves. So I figured while I’m touring the graveyards and cemeteries throughout Australia, why not document it and bring you all along for the journey. Hopefully it inspires you to get out and explore the countryside, cemetery or no cemetery.

I’m intrigued by Tilly Devine’s story as she used to have one of her brothles 5 minutes away from where I live. The house named ‘Interbane’ is a landmark in itself situated on the corner and peak of the mountain, Lawrence Hargrave Drive at Stanwell Tops/Bald Hill NSW 2508. My interest lies in that for 2 reasons. As a teenager one of my best friends parents owned and lived in that house in the 1980’s. Secondly When i was 18 I met a old local lady named Betty Katingle who was Tilly’s assistant in running the brothel at Interbane. Betty’s brother was Tilly Divines personal chauffeur. Some of my friends and I would sit with old Betty at our local club and listen to her many stories of those days. Betty was outwardly very proud of her history and would recommend to us young women about the benefits of prostitution. 😂 She was always a bright and colourful woman who still dressed and portrayed herself like she was as a much younger woman in her years with Tilly. We were all fascinated by her. Some of the older locals at that time also knew her brother well and it is said he was quite the character. If you want to know more research’Interbane’ at Stanwell Tops. Thanks for your video. I feel like i have a connection to Tilly Divine’s story and so to know where she’s interned was of interest to me.

What a great comment and story. Love when viewers take the time to write comments like this. That’s such a great story. The benefits of prostitution made me literally laugh out loud 😂 Tilly was certainly one of the more colourful characters in Australia’s rich criminal history. Once again thanks for the view and comment. I’ll definitely look into the story of Interbane down the track. 🙏

Just found your channel and so pleased I have , it’s great to see Australian content, my grandmother was born in Darlinghurst in the early twenties and talked about the hard times as a child during that period , and I loved seeing the grave of Kate Leigh as I enjoy a quiet drink in her pub ( now called The Milestone ) here in Dubbo

@TJ_Beam Oh, that's great. I didn't realise that Phil Jeffs was laid to rest at Rookwood, I always thought he was buried where he died. I must try and visit his grave. You will find some other famous people at Rookwood cemetery, and all in the Jewish section. Roy Rene, Joe Sandow (Joe the gadget man) and Sallie-Anne Huckstepp.

@TEEJAYS_WORLD I used to go to school with the son of Charlie Bourke, his name was Chris. Chris showed me the spot where his father was shot dead in 1964, on the front steps as he was returning home one night after one of his illegal activities, he was a standover man among other things. His death was apparently a payback and his murder was never solved. You see, Chris and his sister Maria still lived in the same house with their mother, Charlie's second wife after his marriage to Nellie Cameron. I once went to visit the grave of Charlie Bourke and when I found it, I was astounded to see that his entire family had since passed away. The gravestone mentioned Charlie, Chris who died in 1987, and Maria, who I already knew had died of a heroine overdose back in the 70s, and his mother Barbara, I remember Barbara as a lovely lady who doted over her two children. Chris as I recall was quite a tough fellow, just like his father must have been.
