Palm Springs' Crypts / Graves of 23 Famous People

Jeff checks out a myriad of graves of entertainers and other types of famous people who are buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park and Desert Memorial Park in Cathedral City, California, a neighboring city of Palm Springs.
The crypts visited will include Guy Madison, Phil Harris and Alice Faye, Patsy Garrett, John Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas, Buddy Rogers, Gavin MacLeod, Dinah Shore, George Montgomery, singer Jerry Vale, mobster Michael Rizzitello, golfer Ken Venturi, professional women's baseball players Shirley Burkovich and Dottie Kemenshek, actress Ruth Terry, Jane Wyman and ice cream merchant Irvine Robbins.
Across the street at Desert Memorial Park he will visit the graves of Suzanne Somers, Frank Sinatra, Sonny Bono, Betty Hutton, Cameron Mitchell of "High Chaparral" TV series. The visit will conclude with a visit to the grave of Hollywood actor William Powell and actress wife Mousie Powell.

When I saw the thumbnail with Sonny Bono I thought to myself, "I hope Jeff knows Betty Hutton is buried within maybe two hundred feet of Sonny." Both the Hutton sisters, Betty & Marion, were talented actresses and singers, that unfortunately, are mostly forgotten today. Marion was a singer with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Betty sang for Vincent Lopez's Orchestra, and garnered the nickname of, "the Screamer," for her amazing energetic vocal delivery. In her later years Betty Hutton regained some of her popularity on TV, but producers and fans seemed only interested in having her perform songs she popularized in the '40's and '50's, that she couldn't deliver with the physicality she did as a teenager. That was a disservice to everyone. Anyhow, thank you for including her in this video. I wonder how many people drive by on the I-10 without realizing how many dozens of famous people are buried in this little cemetery?

Wow, so many memories! My Mom knew a lot about actors/actresses, films, and news. She was a telephone operator back in the day and she loved her TV. We watched all the awards shows, every telethon, and she had a well-varied taste when it came to her favorite shows throughout the year: Gunsmoke, Rifleman, Bonanza, Perry Mason, Magnum P.I., High Chaparral, Family, Little House On The Prairie, Lassie, Flipper, St. Elsewhere, Hawaii Five-O, Rockford Files, Lawrence Welk, Sonny & Cher, and don't forget the Sunday Night Walt Disney Movie. Yes, she was quite the cross dresser! She would have loved following you! (LOL maybe she DOES follow you!) Great show today, thanks.

In 1967 Phil Harris's marriage was on the rocks. He met a girl in Nashville and arranged for her to work at a nearby dentist's office so she would be close to his house in the Thunderbird Country Club. Alice found out about it in 1970 became very jealous and worked hard at a reconciliation. Phil & Alice got back together for the sake of their family but Phil never gave Shirley up.

I met Phil Harris and his wife Alice in 1994 when he came for a tour at the Henry Ford estate where I worked. Phil Harris already had a slight case of dementia. His wife told me at the time, but he was a very nice man and so was his wife. Sunny Bono's Parents were from Grosse Point, Michigan and her daughter snd granddaughter. She was a student at the University of Michigan Dearborn, where I worked at the Henry Ford estate. I had the privilege of meeting his mother several times along with Sonny's sister and his grandniece, along with his dad, who was a very nice man. His mom was always very nice when I talked to her and his whole family was just sweet people.

I appreciate those stars that, although they are so very well-known by thousands, and could easily justify having a great memorial that stands out, choose to be laid to rest with the everyday person who, more than likely were fans. Well done, Jeff. I wouldn't have known you were battling with that lovely voice of yours. You can come and read the UK telephone book to me any time. Regarding Sinatra and "stars" in general: Death is a great leveller, as you will know. By and large, it is royalty who get to be with their own when they die, and sometimes infants get buried with infants in those cemeteries that have such a dedicated area. I loved the Thin Man films, especially sweet Astor, the dog. It's sad that black and white films are so rarely shown these days. Films like Rebecca, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Shop Around the Corner, Wuthering Heights and many other fabulous black and white films, which included great actors of their day, with equally good performances, are lost to the generations today. Just yours and mine left, Jeff. Anyway, I loved The Thin Man series and never missed one. Thank you for taking the time and doing the legwork on our behalf, Jeff! I feel quite worn out! 😂 Looking froward, here in the UK to your next one! 😊

Wow, I should probably pin your comment to the top. Thank you so much for your compliments about my voice and my work. I don’t think there’s anything special about my voice, but a lot of folks have mentioned they like it. I guess none of us like our own voices, or at least hearing them. So happy to hear that. I have a big fan over in the UK. As far as the old movies, some of them are definitely treasures. I think a lot of folks just assume that if it’s black-and-white, then it’s safe boring or bad movie. When I see what Hollywood is producing With the over-the-top computer generated graphics and unbelievable scenes of destruction I am immediately turned off. Give me a good drama or a slow movie with a good plot any day. I hope you continue to love our program! Blessings to you !

The video taping is outstanding. I just admire the format you use to present the topic, facts and history. This was an exceptional episode. Did these folks live in Palm Springs or just choose to be interred/buried there? I remember my parents had a Phil Harris album and there was a piece called The Deck of Cards about a soldier that used a deck of playing cards as his prayer book. The soldier is chastised until he explains how the cards represent biblical passages or meanings to him. By the end of the piece, i was always in tears. Thank you for bringing all these folks back to us, even for a moment. Outstanding.

its a takes a real love for what you do to be able to go into these cemeteries and not come across as disrespecting others loved ones. we subscribers can feel the respect you have for those you mention. and there families.

Interesting stuff Jeff. We just passed through that area on our road trip to Tombstone and Boot Hill. Coincidentally I also was sick 😷. It takes a lot of planning and research to find all these graves as you could walk right past and not notice the name. Guitar player Dick Dale was a friend for many years and is interned at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I have yet to get down to visit.

Sarah didn’t get out of the car on this one because cemeteries really aren’t her thing for the most part. We started out at the mausoleum and there was no place for her to sit down so she stayed in the car and unfortunately it was a little too warm for her so I don’t think she was feeling great that day.

Excellently produced, photographed, and narrated full of just the right amount of entertaining and educational history. The insertion of film clips is a perfect addition to the description and storyline of these wonderful people allowing one context to place a face with a name. Thank You for your hard work in creating a lasting remembrance for us all to enjoy. God bless you! ✝️

I very much appreciate your comment. It does surprise me when really big stars like Frank Sinatra and Jimmy, Stewart and John Wayne have very modest graves that you would expect to see one of your grandparents having. Like I sided in the video, Bob Hope really had a very special burial ground as to most of the modern recent presidents that we’ve had. Thank you so much for watching and enjoying this video.
