    It's hardly a surprise. The movie was average. I do like seeing Harrison Ford again and the villain was ok, but the CGI, the story, the lack of character development and Phoebe's performance were the main flaws. And I hate to say this but Indiana Jones 4 is a better movie and the ending IS the end for Indiana.

    The Last Crusade was the perfect ending to the franchise when they road the horses & into the sunset. Not to mention the word “Last” indicated final to the trilogy.

    I honestly wonder if Dial of Destiny would have been better if Steven Spielberg had stayed in the director's chair. I think he would have portrayed the broken down Indy, separated from Marion and his son deceased, a lot better. Yes, it still would have been heavy, but Spielberg would have been able to balance the heaviness with a healthy amount of levity. He has proven that he knows how to balance the two.

    I really think Crusty Skull showed that Spielberg wasn't interested in doing Indy films anymore. He did that one to appease Lucas, Ford, and the fans, he didn't do it for himself. So I'm glad it was handed off to another talented director, who of course isn't as good as Spielberg when Spielberg is at his best, but was actually much better than when Spielberg phones it in like he did with Crusty Skull

    That's less than I expected. I think that means "online pundits" greatly overestimate the box office required to be profitable. The latest Thor, Dr. Strange, and GotG were greatly profitable most likely.

    I think people are too harsh on this movie and Crystal Skull, especially Dial of Destiny was a big improvement over KOTCS for me and remember Ford himself really wanted to do both movies, they didn't turn out amazing but it was still fun to see Indy at a later stage in his life and see more about his personal life and struggles, it makes his story more complete.

  • @LazyEyeNZ

    I agree with these points and I personally enjoyed both films.

  • @Casarzino

    @Casarzino

    2 ай бұрын

    @@LazyEyeNZ the main issue with the newer films is that because of his age he can't be as badass and heroic as the first three films. In the 80s films we saw Indy in his prime, in Crystal Skull as a middle-aged man, and in Dial of Destiny as an old man. He can't believably win fights with people half his age and he can't seduce young women. So they had to work around that, but the idea of bringing back Marion and getting married to her was a good idea that made sense (though I was not a fan of KOTCS overall, Dial came closer to capturing that Indiana Jones magic from the older films). In Dial of Destiny we also get to see Indy during World War II on a Nazi treasure train which was awesome. Plus we had a brief scene with him actually in the past which I thought was also really cool. So the new films, while definitely flawed, also added some new things that added to the Indiana Jones legacy in interesting ways.

    If they treated the series like James Bond with recasting the role and keeping Indy unaged in the pulp gold age forever than Indiana Jones would have become the biggest film franchise of all time.

    I think Dial of Destiny does hint at an awesome series timeline. 1935 to 1969 would be the equivalent of a long career, in reality. But, the film doesn’t have a good story and I haven’t rewatched it since it has been added to Disney+.

    Well there is the budget, this movie was one of the most expensive movies ever with a reported budget of 387 million. So right there that's a loss of 3 mil. but wait you do know that studios don't get 100% of box office returns right? Do you seriously think that movie theaters don't take a cut? Of course they do depending on the theater its anywhere from 25-40%. So by my math 384 mill x 35%=250mil. 387-250=137. So right in line with the reported 134 mill loss.
