India’s prostitution villages | DW Documentary

Sex work is a way of life for thousands of women in marginalized communities in certain parts of rural India. For many, it is the only way to make money - also due to the Indian caste system and centuries-old prejudices which make it difficult for the families to escape poverty. But winds of change are blowing.
In certain Indian villages, sex work is, in a sense, inherited. Mothers and grandmothers have already worked in the same trade. In the past, they mostly belonged to ethnic groups that worked mainly as performers. The British colonial power criminalized them, and to this day it is especially difficult for the men of these ethnic groups to find regular jobs. Therefore, the female members of the family are often the breadwinners. They are the ones who take out loans, build houses, make important decisions, which is otherwise rare in India. Our reporters Akanksha Saxena and Neerat Kaur looked around the villages - and found signs of hope: The young generation is trying to leave this sad tradition behind and fight for better education and rights.

The Indians will just blame the British, as they usually do, for all of their problems and their failures, and under the current Modi regime they've made it hard for NGOs to operate mainly because it shames the Indians and shows the world how little the GOI is actually doing for it's own people! Caste was banned under Dr Ambedkar's excellent secular constitution in 1950, but as usual with the Indians they just ignore the laws that they don't like, and corruption plays its part too! It is what it is.

Yes, it is unbelievable, that in 21 century there are cast systems that discriminate and victimize men, women and their children which is horrible).

@@bishesh535 you must be Indian. Indians can’t stand being criticized for your system. Automatically compare it to other systems when it’s not about that. Even only fans, as horrible as it is, is still a “choice” for most people. These women in India don’t have a choice and for many it’s the ONLY one. That’s the difference. As she says, no one in her family had jobs and her sister “had” to get married. Why does her sister HAVE TO get married? Because of tradition and culture in this place. Fight for change in your own country and support women. Stop comparing to other countries and to justify the issues in your own. It’s not about other countries it’s about India.

Why are they (DW) ignoring the child sexual exploitation cases in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Norway, and Sweden, etc... hmmmm. The data clearly shows that immigrants are vastly overrepresented. This is why they won't investigate the problem. 89% of groomers in the Netherlands have an immigrant background, and 60% are Muslims, while most victims in the Netherlands are Dutch girls, not immigrant girls. The vast majority of victims in the UK are British girls, not immigrant girls.

Nomadic has nothing to do with caste system, firstly tribes weren’t part of caste system. They were openly welcomed if they visited any town or village. So I don’t know how we were not integrated before. Yes british pushed them in jungles even further. Read about that, when their land was commercialised and sold to outsiders.

You must be an A class ignorant to think that it has to do with caste or tribe. I'm from a lower SC It's just a primitive taboo that exists in certain parts of India as CULTURE. The government didn't force others or forced them into it. Their elders forced them to be this way. They evolved slowly while the rest didn't. The previous government was pathetic in terms of progress, be it social or economical.

Look at all the lowly jobs such as street sweepers, manual scavengers all are given to the Dalits. caste system enforces strict endogamy. Honour killing of couples who dare to marry outside from from their caste is still not uncommon. Caste system is against love. The people who deny that cast system doesn't exist or it is practiced sporadically come from the oppressor caste who enjoy the privilegeds of the Caste system

I'm not denying the history, you should just open your eyes fairly and realize how racist people have become against white people in America, like, there's no denying it, they can openly be racist about white people in their tv shows and their politicians show this exact behavior as well, meanwhile preaching that they are the liberators. Unless of course you have been thought by black supremacists that black people can't be racist. If that's the case, there's no reason left to elaborate any further.
