Just don't grab them. They react to pressure. If you let it walk on you it's fine. They can be fairly docile and even tame if done correctly.

I love praying mantises. I used to catch them all the time because a lot lived around my old house. I never had one bite or pinch me, when I had them I would make sure that they were well fed and I think that they understood that I was the one who was finding all that food for them. I could walk around outside with a mantis perched on my arm seeming completely content and not trying to escape.

I love praying mantis', there was one here last summer that was actually playing. We have one of those pin wheel things that spin in the wind, the mantis would climb around to the top, and rock it back and forth until it spun around. And then when it stopped, he'd climb back up and rock the top petal back and forth until it started spinning again. It was the first time I ever saw a bug play, just for fun.

Pretty much harmless. I think it's a whip tail spider, perhaps is what it's called. I also think that may be the creature used in Harry Potter movies, during Defense against the Dark Arts class, with mad-eye.

"Ever since I was a little kid, this was my favorite insect to ... " run away from for dear life from the back yard.

Fun fact: I have actually found a tree-bark looking mantis which I believe was male. I found him a few years ago when my neighborhood was beginning to have new homes built. I was walking along a trail and found him in the middle of the road. I picked him up carefully, carried him in my hoodie, and found a good tree, then placed him on it so he blended back in :3 They are truly hard to find these days in my backyard in north carolina but I do hope to find one again soon. Also when I was 3 (I am 14 as of august 8) there was a HUGE mantis on my padio in connecticut. My brother who is 18 (really mean to me) and I have always loved mantises. Their pricks startle you a tiny bit but don't hurt once you get used to it which only takes a few minutes :3 I was surprised to find a bark colored one since I believe green ones are the most common. He had dark brown and a bit of light brown. It was cool. A year ago I found one on my deck and my mom was like "YAY A MANTIS IS HERE! I LOVE MANTISES!" They eat all the annoying pests and look funny because they appear to look as if they will fight in any moment. "Hey! You want a piece of me!?" My favorite insects are a tie between ladybugs, mantises, and butterflies. My mom loves inchworms because of how they inch. In general, my favorite land mammal is a fox, (especially fennec foxes. I got to hold one back in april of 2017. They only get up to 7 inches! so tiny!) and my favorite water animal is a dolphin

It's neat how the mantis has like a scale looking pattern on it, that makes it look even more like a leaf! It's so crazy that they've adapted to look like that naturally! Like when one is born does it already look like a little leaf, naturally?? Wow.

The way that it's just waving his claw is so cute

I love the coloration on the hood that looks like dead spots on a leaf. In New Mexico, we used to have one of another variety that was better adept to blending in in the desert sand... He would hang out on my moms hummingbird feeder and catch his lunch. We moved him away from the hummingbird feeder several times, but he always found his way back to hunt for birds and had racked up quite the body count lol! Mantis are among my favorite insects, right alongside Dragonflies... I would love to see dragonflies on your show :)

AB_ Fxx actually, they are correct. In total they have 5 eyes. Two big ones, and three little ones between their eyes ontop of their head. They can also see as far as 50 ft.

I bought a mantis egg at a local gardeners nursery some years back, and over a hundred little babies came out from it. They look the same as they do fully grown, just much more smaller.

Ali Kürşat Şahin absolutely not. it's much more likely to happen in the wild since keepers feed the female in captivity to reduce her appetite and can separate the mantises if things appear to go wrong. The stress level of a mantis in captivity is the lowest possible if temperature, humidity, feeding and caging are appropriate Btw some mantis species show little to no tendency to cannibalism but those are a small minority.
