Very good lesson. Thank you! My attempt at summary: Three things in the brain. 1) brain mass/volume (brain cells I guess?) 1300 mL 2) Blood 130mL (supplied by a main artery) 3) Fluid CSF 130mL (Which suspends the brain matter? "Perfuse"? Gives the inter-cranial pressure ICP) 3:00 Brain pressure (CPP specificailly ) must be in a certain range in order to give brain cells and neurons enough OXYGEN and NUTRIENTS to surive. CPP = MAP - ICP (mean arterial pressure - inter-cranial pressure) So if the pressure is not right, your brain will not function well. 5:30 causes of head pressure (ICP) too high = if any of the "three things in the brain" increases. Firstly, brain mass can increase due to tumor, abcess, edema, brain tissue bleeding. @6:00 Secondly, brain fluid (CSF) can increasue due to the following. Note that CSF is constantly produced and recycled within the head/brain, the brain stem, and the brain venous system. So, too much CSF fluid production OR a blockage in the CSF drainage can cause pressure to increase. @7:00 Thirdly, cranial blood pressure can increase due to high venous pressure due to previous heart failure? @7:10; high CO2 level hypercapnia; @7:40 symptoms of high cranial pressure: GCS Glasgow coma scale decreases (indicates brain funtion) ? headaches - because eninges layer stretches. 9:00 vomiting - because vagus nerve is pressed or irritated 10:00 papilla edema (optic disc swelling) because venous drainage is not good. Cushing reflex triad (high blood pressure, irregular breathing, low heart rate) 11:40

Diagnosed with IIH in 2010 after I experienced extreme headache, vision disturbance, I was unbalanced, had tinnitus and the list goes on but you are the first person that explained the vomiting to me!!! Im not a medical student but a lot of this video made sense and for that I thank you.

Thank you so much! Especially about the Cushing reflex! (The triad) I was diagnosed a while back but I don’t really understand it. I have these headaches everyday but don’t have the eye problem so don’t need the shunt (not that I’m complaining) I just wish the medications worked better. I’m miserable everyday. At least I understand a little more. It’s helpful.

For those who suffer from intracranial hypertension and are not responding to drug therapy (acetazolamide and/or topirimate), check out venous sinus stenosis and the option for stenting. Dr. Athos Patsalides and Dr. Waleed Brinjikji are two of the leading docs you can find on KZread for further information on this condition that is prevalent in a high percentage of people who suffer from pseudotumor cerebri/idiopathic intracranial hypertension.

CAN YOU HELP ME IN THIS REGARD?

I just went in for a blood patch for a csf leak as I get positional headaches. Turns out my csf pressure was actually high (27). They lowered it and I didn’t get a blood patch. I’ve been dealing with morning headaches for about two years. Although I’m not sure what the root cause is, this video blew my mind.

Then, 150/100-110. So, when they normalize my icp, my bp Will go down as well? Never had bp problems, not even during my Five pregnancies.

Can intracranial pressure elevate when taking drugs like Accutane? I have never expierienced problems with headaches or eyes etc. I am 1 year after my accutane course, and I have been seeing doctors and hospitals for headaches, espiecially pain at the back of my head, feeling of floating without losing balance, severe eye strain, where I can simply not look at computers at all sometimes but my vision stays perfect. I have been checking my eyes, and my eye pressure was elevated but not severly yet. I also have anemia so I am very fatigued. I feel like accutane caused some kind of imbalanced but my doctors wont really see it as a cause. What should I do to check the presssure in the skull? I do not want to get any syringes inside my head :(
