This felt like I was having a one on one lesson, for free, with a National Master! Thank you, Nelson, I'm very much becoming a big fan.

This is great! I like that you *both* addressed the my-level moves *and* mentioned "next-level" ideas. I fully intend to reach the next level, so every hint helps.

“Every move that they make has a purpose” My brother taught me chess as a kid, I’d get so frustrated b/c after EVERY move I made he asked me what the purpose of that move was. I never really knew so I’d get frustrated and want to stop playing! I just wanted to be good without taking the time to learn 😂 Now, I don’t move a piece w/o a purpose and understand why he stressed the importance of it. I took those lessons for granted back then but I appreciate your lessons even more because of it. You reinforce a lot that he tried to teach me. My point is, I’m really grateful for this channel. Thanks so much.

I think the difference between a beginner and an intermediate player is that intermediate players know the purpose behind every move they make, even if a move does not serve that much of a purpose, they know that it doesn't do much. Btw, the purpose of some moves does not have to be concrete. It could simply be because you think the new position of your pieces is likelier to have better control of the board.

Nelson, thanks! I certainly learned a lot, will try to put some of those ideas to use, like about not wasting tempos, connecting rooks before pushing random pawns, and guarding the center pawns in the opening. Unfortunately for me I feel I play better at rapid and can actually formulate coherent plans, but blitz is what I have more time for since it's easier to fit in a 3 minute game than a 10 minute game.

Try 5 minutes. If you're used to 3 minutes 5 will be more than enough to think a not so complicated game. I started playing 5|5 this week and i really noticed how I'm never pressed for time, and the game is also not to long. 15 minutes per game max, the shorter one is around 8 minutes

Around 1000 if you don't play dxc4, white will too often play c5 or delay it just to hit Bd6 with c5. Getting c4 push from black against London setup and c5 push from white against this semi-Slav setup tends to be hard to deal for anyone below 1000 online rating - and partially a reason for not having higher rating.

Honestly it doesn't matter what your rating is, doing blunder checks is essential and really saves you games as soon as they get more natural and less time consuming in your gameplay. I know they can be taxing sometimes, especially for beginners under timepressure or when you're tunneling on an idea a bit, which happens let's be real. I remember when i started i had that problem all the time where i found a seemingly good idea, invested my whole brain to calculate how that can work out, but simultaneously blundered all my pieces in the process because i was too focused in the offense whilst neglecting my defense. :( So my advice would be, try to play balanced as much as possible and get a habit to monitor all pieces, especially the long ranged ones, because they snipe you out of nowhere sometimes if you're not careful. :P EDIT: it also helps to watch all of Nelson's chess principle vids/streams :D

I have a question, as a follow up to what you said about knights pretty much always going to c6/f6 (at 2:10): How/when do you decide to go to d7/e7 with the knights on the first move? (I know one reason can be that if one is on c6 than placing the other on e7 makes them guard each other, and likewise with f6 and d7) Also - are there any scenarios in which you would move the knights to a6/h6 on the first move?

Im not very good at chess so take my answer with a grain of salt but in some cases you might want to push your c or f pawn and if the knight is on c6 or f6 it blocks the pawn

I wonder what black would have done if Qa2 after the brilliant rook move 1. Qa2 Rxg1+ 2. Kxg1 Rf7 3. Rb8 Qg3 4. Rb1 ?

At 1:30, can’t you still have done Qa5 after dxc5 if the knight was there because of the threat of Ne4? The idea of c5 and Qa5 to Qc5 is a key theme in the Pirc defense

If dxc5 the queen is exposed. I don't know what theory says here, but afaik, it's a mistake not to trade queen's in the beginning when they stare at one another as the defending side will lose castling rights. If you mean to take the knight on c3 by trading with Ne4 with hopes of winning a rook, the c3 square can easily be protected by moving the queen to d2 or d3 so there is no king-rook fork. Nevertheless, it wouldn't even be possible to take the rook if the queen is on the starting square.

My weakness is getting forked by the knight. That's the worst piece in chess i think. But i got better at it by avoiding it and paying more attention to it. But i still make mistakes by not paying attention to it. I think i got a slow progress in chess generally.

Hi Nelson. I was following you quite some time and thanks for all brilliant videos until now. I think this is the best concept so far you released since I assume so many of your followers within this range including myself. Once you analyze on our level games this is the best learning from our level. I hope you will released more videos on this concept. Of course, following your games and other masters games gave us great vision but this concept is different. It is like practical example of all our common mistakes. Anyway, cutting short, this was the one the best concept until now from your channel. Please keep doing.

I think most of your viewers would be between 700-1500 so analysis of this range is much appreciated I would say.

At this level you wonder if the brilliant moves are actually intended by the players or if they just "blundered" instead into a brilliant move. Fun to watch, anyway!

I saw the checkmate but didn't notice capturing the rook was unnecessary, could have checkmated with the queen since my rook pinned the opponent rook.

2:25 I feel like your speech is too biased. You speak of it like it's an inaccuracy but you should be honest: After Qc2 you lose the possibility to make this move forever. Wouldn't it be better to say, instead of "This move has issues here, here and here" - "This move is good but you then need to move here and do this"?
