It was covered 9 years later by American country music artists Emmylou Harris and Don Williams as a duet, and was released in September 1981 as the first single from Harris' album Cimarron. In 2017, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires recorded a cover for a Don Williams tribute album. Gove Scrivenor recorded a version on his #shineon album in 1998

This song makes me very emotional, every single time I listen to it. Describes my life, remembering when I saw my wife for the very first time, she was 15 years old and I 17, since our first eyes contact, we knew our lives meant to be together. We found happiness together, we shared so many beautiful moments, and quite a few challenging and sad ones too. 34 years has gone so fast and I glad and so thankful we still leaning on each other. I pray to our Lord to give us many more years together. God bless everyone, be kind out there.

I have a similar experience. My wife was 14 and I was 16. We were 16 and 18 when we married and are going on 67 years of marriage. Everyone said it would not last, and we jokingly say we hope they are wrong. True love is rare. Cherish it brother. 👍💕♥️🥰

With gentle, simple,pure wordings, yet so captivating, and amazingly beautiful.❤❤ I have never heard it, before now,……now, being, 17th April 2024, at 2.30am, in the morning Irish ☘️ time. Am an 83yr old lady, from Ireland 🇮🇪. Southern Ireland, home to some of the most beautiful scenic views, and countryside, the greenest grass, but get lots of ☔️ rain, especially Wintertime, and part of Summertime , also….hence the most luscious , and greenest of grass !!.Grew up with the Classics, and loved music, and song.My father had a lovely tenor voice, hence, the Classics, world famous tenors of the times,ie,…Enrico Caruso, Benjamino Gili,Jussi Bjorling, and Richard Tauber,, But I had a broad repertoire, and later came across the wonderful Everly Brothers,,never again b skilful harmonists e their likes…Don, and Phil,were wonderful musicians,singers,Don’s great guitar 🎸 ability, guitar riffing,also song writer, they taught them all, how it’s done, yet no one could ever match them, and their magical, spot on,extraordinary, pristine harmonies, no one to match them, Even Beatles, admitted to try and emulate,their skilful harmonising, it admitted they just couldn’t match them….Simon, and Garfunkel, said same,their harmonies, were incredibly tight, like one voice,absolutely pristine.Getting back to this 💕 ❤️ lovely song….. I heard Don Williams voice,…must have, over the years, on the radio, but, never knew his name. Same with Emmy Lou, didn’t come across her till 70,s, or so . Was married by then

Don and Emmylou are honestly my favorite male and female country artists of ALL time. I grew up listening to both of them and was always in love with Don!!!! I miss him so much...miss their voices so much!! His is so pure, mellow and hers too!!!❤I used to dance with my son when he was a toddler singing this song, and it would get the tears going every time. They both harmonize so well with anyone and yes it's beautiful!! As they called him the Gentle Giant, his voice was amazing and even bigger!! They are both amazing storytellers, singers and songwriters!! They are forever my faves!!!❤❤

Hope, I put this pairing in the same category as George Jones and Melba Montgomery , they are so easy to listen to ,I was so fortunate to have seen both couples in concert and came away with wonderful CD s and DVD s , trips to the states are not the same now that we've lost most of the greats of country music, great to have sites like this to remind us of what we once had and what we will never see the likes of again, cheers from Tasmania

Great song! Worth noting that in the next to last verse (sung solo by Don) the line: “ Who could ill agree….” was originally written by Townes as “Loop and Lil agree…”. That’s the way it’s written in Townes' own songbook. According to Townes, Loop and Lil were two parrots he had at the time.
