I Was Attacked In France

I've been in France with my campervan over the last few weeks and I've been visiting the WW1 sites on the Western Front where three of my relatives died. During my trip, there have been quite a few unexpected things happen and in this video I share with you what has been going on and the reason why I have decided to cancel my trip and return to Scotland early.

Here in France, dog owners are completely liable for the damage they do. Consider contacting an officer at the nearest gendarmerie. They can make the owner have the dog quarantined, tested, and the owner fined. I’m so very sorry you’ve had such troubles. I love your videos!

As the owner of a German shepherd mix I am horrified by your experience and the fact that a person has taken this dog to such a public place without having any control of its behavior. That is so so scary and horribly irresponsible for literally everyone involved; and they remained parked next to you afterwards, which blows my mind! I can’t even comprehend that. Dogs: As a wee lad I delivered newspapers to homes every day over an extensive area and had much experience with aggressive dogs. 1) Stand your ground as running sparks their instincts to attack as a pack-animal; 2) When standing during a charging dog attack, reach down to mimic picking up a stick or rock (of course, only if they are far enough away to safely bend over) and raise your hand above your head threateningly, this usually will cause them to stop immediately to reevaluate you as prey and whether you will now harm them (with a non-existent stick or rock) if they get closer, they may circle or follow you at this point but it will give you a chance to get to a safer position or the time to take off a knapsack to use as a shield. Best.

When I was a child I was invited into some children's house. They had a dog. It ran at me barking. I turned to run and it bit me in the back of my leg. When I was grown some dogs were circling me and I kept turning so they couldn't get behind me. I learned not to run. I stood my ground and raised my hand like I was going to hit them. I also raised my voice at them. They finally gave up.

17:40 Ruth, so sorry to hear your dog bite story. Get well soon! I fully empahise as I too have a chequered history with dogs since childhood. I appreciate that many owners love their pets more than their own children and so will excuse anything their pet does to the point of blaming 'victims' - "you shouldn't have run", "screaming only makes dogs excited", "Oh, that's only a nip not a bite", "he just wanted to play", and the classic "dogs can sense bad people" etc etc!

Dog owners with no control of their animals infuriate me. "Oh, he's just being friendly" they laugh, as it jumps up scratching and covering someone in mud. I'm lucky, I'm not scared of dogs so I am fully prepared to control it if the owner won't. This usually goes down as well as you'd expect, but f- 'em. I can imagine how scary it was to have that dog go after you, not nice at all. Not sure how far in advance you release your vids, but I can fully recommend the In Flanders Fields museum in Leper/Ypres. Also Chez Tommy in Pozières, a restaurant-museum in the heart of the battlefields East of Albert. July 1st 1916, first day of the Battle of the Somme between Albert and Roye -- 19,000 young men dead, ten of thousands wounded. The deadliest battle in the history of humanity. 30000 dead and wounded in the first 6 minutes of the battle. The Germans couldn't believe their eyes when they saw soldiers walking toward them. What does the British chief of staff order for July 2nd 1916? Another assault, just to verify the theory that one machine gun replaces 50 soldiers armed with a rifle. With an equally catastrophic result. They tested their theory for another couple of years, to be dead sure. My grandfather was extraordinarily lucky to be made prisoner before Verdun. Twenty one years later, he was faced with another war.

Hi Ruth, I'm new to your channel. So sorry about what happened to you on your journey. I think a gold star award is in order for your resilience and determination to keep going in what were very trying situations. I was once chased by a dog when I was a wee boy on my way to primary school in Glasgow. Natural instinct was to run and the owner caught their dog before it caught me. It was scary and it took me a while to get over it, but I eventually did and I seem to get on well with dogs - I'm 70 now by the way. I love all animals, well except the squirrels that keep coming down and eating all the bird food. In a nutshell, we all have difficult times Ruth, some we can control and some we can't. It's part of life's rich tapestry someone once told me; maybe it is, I don't know. The important thing is to try and put it behind you and move on. Can be tough at times, but I think it makes us stronger and yet more resilient and more determined. Look forward to going through your earlier videos and seeing your new ones. I discovered your channel recently and have been very much enjoying them. I completely understand the decision to go home, when things pile on top of you, one after the other, I think it's completely natural to reach a breaking point. When it stops being fun, why continue. Hopefully you can re-try France at some point in the future. The WW1 videos were very well done, one of them appeared in my feed. I had a family member die in the Somme and apparantly a family member is listed in a book full of names in the Royal Regiment building at Edinburgh castle. I wish I knew more than that on both counts, but that's what my uncle told me not too long before he passed away. Anyway, best of luck on your future videos. I hope you won't be too disheartened by your experiences in France.

So sorry to hear about all you troubles on your trip and I can understand your feeling of wanting to go home. Like you I have a fear of dogs because I was bitten as a child, quite badly, and since then I have lost my trust. I often encounter dogs running out of control ,no leash and no voice control and I have to avoid certain parks where I live because of that issue. You are very brave to have done this trip in the Winter and I'm glad you had a good person to help you with your van.......Kindness makes all the difference!

Thank goodness you didn’t get broken skin ! I hope you read this. I’ve grown up with dogs and know a lot about their behavior. Never show fear. I’m so sorry for your experience. You can't know how every dog reacts. I also was attached by a dog in the park. Before I never feared dogs. Then I was just walking and a middle-size dog was sitting in the middle of the area and 2 teenage girls were frolicking in the waterfall, it was their dog. The dog was silent, but as soon as I approached him, he jumped at my knee and bit me. Because I wore jeans and the dog bit me in the knee, my skin wasn't broken, even the fabric of the jeans didn't get broken. But I was shocked and since then I'm trying to avoid all dogs. Another dog jumped at me when I intentionally turned my back, but it was a large dog who wanted just to play with me. However, the woman let him run free and when he jumped at me, she just said: "It's OK." No, it wasn't OK, because I didn't want strange dogs jumping at my long cream coat. Some dog owners are disrespectful and arrogant humans...

Sorry to hear the troubles that you have had. Quite right, so home, relax, take a bit of time and regroup. Sometimes it feels like everything happens at once! My only comment is to not run and scream at a dog. I teach my kid to stay completely still and not say anything. I appreciate you have had issues with dogs in the past & how scary it must be. But running from a dog and screaming at it may not have helped. Even if I am out running, if a dog comes running at me i just stop and stand still until the owner has got control of it again. Not easy as you want to run but the best thing. Hope you manage to fix all the bits about the van and don’t feel disheartened x

If you can help it, if the dog looks like it’s going to attack or barks at you stand in place and do nothing don’t talk to it. You don’t raise your arm toward it. I had a big husky like dog in Ireland completely off the lead run barking at me like it was gonna turn me apart, and I was on a path toward another part of the town and a very nice man advised me to just freeze and the dog barked at me for a long time very ferociously and then finally it left without biting.

Sorry about your dog problems, some dog owners are very irresponsible and really shouldn’t be in charge of dogs or even own them. Glad to hear that you are calling into Ypres on your way home. I had a week’s holiday in Bruges a few years ago. The tour I was on took us to Ypres and the battlefields there. The big hall in Ypres has a great WWI museum and of course at the end of town is the Menin Gate. Here every evening the Belgians play the Last Post every night since WWI. Unfortunately wasn’t able to stay until the evening. I found the battlefields here very interesting and moving, especially as we had a very knowledgeable guide. We saw the Ypres and Tyne Cott cemeteries. We were also taken to see one of the very few German cemeteries, very dark and eerie, no nice pale sandstone or marble. All tombstones jet black and very gothic. If you have time Bruges is a great city to visit. Great sites of interest, canals, beers and lovely chocolate. Bruges can get very busy but maybe this time of the year it should be OK.

Really sorry to hear about your problems Ruth. As a dog owner myself it makes me angry when folk have their dogs out of control. It’s all about irresponsible owners most of the time and not the dog itself. I’ve always been an advocate of dog licensing in the UK as so many idiots obtain dogs and don’t train them. As you’re well aware they can be very dangerous when in the wrong hands. Hope you’re doing well and have enjoyed all the videos from France 🇫🇷. So sorry Ruth, especially after all your prep/excitement that it’s come to this, but brave to make the decision to leave, sometimes bailing is the best option. I was attacked by a dog when I was 6 and it does stay with you, sounds like you’ve been particularly unlucky ☹️ Hopefully the van issues are fairly easy to sort at home, dealing with issues like this on trips I find a bit of an adventure, but especially difficult in that weather and the language barrier, seems you got decent help though. That is a lot of bad luck on one trip! Anyone who says "you should have done this, you should have done that" is just being churlish. I also think some people just have no proper concept of what dog ownership should entail. Even if you're convinced your dog is the sweetest in the world, people should respect the fact that not everyone is keen. I love dogs but I can be wary of them at times and it's surprising how often owners are surprised at that wariness. They forget that dogs are not robots that can be programmed to always behave predictably. Training is effective most of the time, but they're animals with their own instincts and things can and do go wrong. For what it's worth, I love Belgium. It has amazing food and beautiful towns and cities. Both Flanders and Wallonia are very charming places. I know it's a little while ago since all this happened but I hope you're feeling better about it all and your leg is okay.

For everyone saying "don't run""face up to the dog" - I tried that and it didn't work out for me, so it's not universally good advice in a dog attack. Dogs can be very unpredictable and individual when they are not under discipline so armchair quarterbacking after the fact is just ungracious.

Now you realize again how much reliable the friend being with you when you were locked out of the campervan. AND he speaks Spanish very well❣️

Wow, so sorry to hear of your attack by a dog, fortunate that it didn't break the skin. You're right, some dog owners assume they have a god given right to won and exercise dogs and don't always realise that some other people aren't keen. Sorry it has caused you to cut your trip short (along with the other issues and the cold weather), hopefully you'll be back on the road in France in the future. Stay safe 👍

Your productions on this trip have been outstanding so it's very disappointing to hear of the misfortunes that you have suffered. I suppose it's just "life". Hopefully you will get home safely and recover from these experiences and return during a spell of more favourable weather. As someone who has largely travelled alone for around 18 years I appreciate how tough it can sometimes get. Stay strong and keep up the excellent work !
