Another great video, Ruth. I really enjoyed it. When you are looking at these mountains and they have the shadows of the clouds on them, do you ever think about how the mountain has never looked like this before and will never look like that again?

Perhaps volunteers from The Bothy Association periodically stay in the attic to create a presence and ensure a defree of safety.

Such varied topography and microclimes 😮🤩! Did not know of the connection to Robert the Bruce😮! So sorry that you got a street-splashing, after that bracing swim 😢 - I’ve been in some real frog-stranglers, trying to get around on buses, on the Gulf Coast of Texas, and Houston had pretty bad street flooding even if it didn’t rain a lot. This is the second trip lately where you have run into weather that challenges even a fairly large ferry. Is this normal, this time of year?

Ruth, I really liked this informative, culinary upload. I'm 3rd generation Canadian of Scottish descendant, and always incorporate regional foods when I visit the old country. You've pointed out several things I wasn't aware of, and can't wait to try on my next return. Slàinte mhath!

What a great video! I wish I were there with you. That bothy is bigger than my whole apartment and has a much better view. I am a 2nd generation Scottish-American and my family came from Arbroath, where I have visited. Still have a cousin in Edinburgh and people in Comrie.

Another fun trip down memory lane for me. The only thing you missed that I loved as a kid were the fossilized dinosaur footprints found here & there on the island. I went to school in England, age 11-18, where the lies about Scottish history told in the classroom were among the few things in life that push the BS meter higher than a Scottish weather forecast that doesn't mention rain. My grandparents had some very posh friends whose families had historically profited from The Clearances. The spin at home & in the classroom was that there weren't really that many made homeless , most who were had to have been lazy parasites, and/or The Clearances were actually a good thing for the poor crofter; a springboard to a better life in the US/CAN or Aus/NZ. Your favorite lurid folk hero, Sawney Bean, is believed by some to be a bit of English propaganda meant to spin The Scots as criminal barbarians, making the British public less sympathetic to the plight of these unsavoury medieval primitives, even if they heard about it. You & ferries ! I was waiting for the attack of feral dogs while you were in the queue. I know it's good for you, but kale ?! You need three stomachs to digest that stuff. Never mind the right boots, you really shouldn't visit stone circles & caves on Arran without a rowan stick or it'll be the faeries that get you, not the ferries.

How strange that there is not even an outhouse there. People pooping outside is the result then..😮 In Finland in every camping place there is at least an outhouse. Staying in a bothy would be too rough for me and with no locks, really creepy.

Amazing video and trip. I can't believe how chaotic the reservations for the trip off Arran were. You were blessed! What would you have done if you had to wait for the Sunday reservation? I love the fact that you, a Scot, have difficulty pronouncing the names of the towns. Also love the standing stones. Fantastic. Keep it up.

It is amazing to see how clean the cottage was . We stay in Bachs in New Zealand and they always seem to be run down rotten wood dirty cupboards with dirty pots and cutlery and ants, and they are still $200 a night ! Glad you enjoyed your stay .

Arran is wonderful and you captured it beautifully. On my second visit, we were on our way to Kintyre. The Lochranza ferry was cancelled and we ended up heading back to Ardrossan and facing a 150 mile drive to Machrihanish arriving 6 hours later than planned. The joys of island ferries

When I drove to Arran in 2006, I just used the Lochranza ferry rather than the Brodick one. It does then give you a long drive back to Glasgow but maybe operates when the other ferries are getting cancelled due to bad weather?

24:31 It's not that hard to lift heavy stones, you just have to have be smart about it. And a bit of patience. There are some videos on KZread which show how one man can lift a 20-ton Stonehenge stone (hint: it takes a lot of logs and wiggling).

A further note on your great video of the Somme. At Lochnagar we saw numerous memorial plaques on the walkways which also commemorated the survivors of the carnage. One was chilling stating a 25 year old who was ‘Shot at Dawn’ but pardoned in 2006’. Lochnaghar crater site needs a fair bit of maintenance and is not funded by the CWGC.

Hello! Went through Scottish primary school in the early 2000s and we had a whole project on Scottish history like the clearances and the jacobites etc! We even got a field trip to Culloden. Would recommend BadBea on the north east coast. It’s a village where people were put when they were cleared from their crofts by land owners ☺️
