Speyside, Scotland is often called whisky country as it’s the most densely populated whisky region in the world with over 50 distilleries, all within a stone’s throw of each other.
Home to some of the most famous and iconic whisky distilleries in Scotland, including Glenfiddich, Macallan, The Glenlivet, Balvenie and Cardhu, Speyside single malt whisky is renowned around the world. Located in north-east Scotland, Speyside is more easily accessible compared to the Isle of Islay, another of Scotland’s famous whisky regions which requires a ferry or a flight.
Although there is a popular Speyside whisky trail, I do my own Speyside distillery tour, visiting Speyside distilleries and the Speyside cooperage, doing Speyside distillery tours and drinking plenty of Speyside whisky at Speyside hotels and whisky bars in the process.
Join me on this Scotland travel adventure through Speyside as I continue to learn more about whisky, Scotland’s national drink! 🥃

One of my favorite whiskies is Monkey Shoulder. Named for a repetitive strain injury once common among distillery workers, who turned the malt by hand, it's a mix of Speyside whiskies (originally Balvene, Glenfiddich, and Kininvie, but the mix is no longer made public).

Love these distillery-hops. I prefer the Speysides, especially Aberlour and Balvenie. It did me a world of good to see a Japanese guy running a Scottish whisky bar and a Scotswoman speaking Japanese to him. A bright spot in otherwise troubled times.

As a post-retirement activity I worked for a few years selling liquor here in Ontario. Controlled by the provincial government, most store have an excellent selection of blends and single-malts. With my ancestry going back to Islay, I quickly became the whiskey expert in my store, and would often recommend those peaty offerings as they were also my favourites. Your adventures on Islay and Speyside would be something I’d love to experience. I also learned a few new things. Top-notch as usual, Ruth!

Cracking video. I really think the distilleries are missing a trick by not making "drivers' drams" or even small bottles available. After all if you LIKE the dram you buy, you may go on to buy more.

  • @ruthaisling

I totally agree. Especially as some whiskies which are now my favourites and I have bought more of and recommended to others are as a result of me first trying them as driver's drams - an example being the Kilchoman - Machir Bay.

Some of those distilleries seem to have strange policies that penalise the driver! Refusing to allow the driver to take samples away, when they've paid the same price for the tour, is silly. And failing to sell small bottles, which ought to be much more profitable than selling large bottles, is another odd policy. However, the Walker's shortbread... Yes please! When I was a child, I had an aunt and uncle, in York, who worked at the old Rountree factory, and we always got big bags of seconds when we visited! Happy days! 😂

I don't know if you mentioned it in this video or another on whiskey. You said the hangovers were less on a particular whiskey than on wine or other types of alcoholic beverages. This interested me as I hate hangovers so I rarely drink alcohol at all. In the past I would not drink whiskey unless it was 12 years old at least and then only particular brands. Here in Australia the whiskey brands are limited. The types bottled here are a bit rough generally but types bottled in Scotland are so much better. I had no idea there were so many brands and types., thankyou for the info.....Robert

When it comes to Speyside whiskies, I like The Glenlivet and The Macallan. However, in recent years these whiskies have become much more expensive than before due to tariffs and rates. But sometimes I drink these whiskies for celebrations even though they are a little expensive😅🤚!! ️Every time I drink one of these whiskies, I am reminded of how I used to go trout fishing (fly fishing) on the Huntly River near Elgin in this region. At this time, I filled my Skittles with these whiskies and drank them between fishing trips while enjoying the scenic views around me. There was an impression here that you can't experience only at the Whisky Heritage Centre in Edinburgh. It's a place I'd like to visit again and again. At that point, I almost hated going back to Japan 😅🤚Thank you Ruth for your scenic videos. These days, every time I get drunk, I think of your homeland.

If you want to make a sort of compilation, I would gather 1) Glan Grant, 2) Laphroigh, 3) Glen Grant, 4) Talisker (the oldest whisky), 5) Glenlivet, the whisky of Hemingway - combined with some other lesser known brands - I prefer single malts. Macallan, Bowmore, Glenfiddich. There are some nice things to know. Whisky distiller like to use the old casks of Cognac and Armagnac, giving the whisky extra flavor. Sometomes it is not so easy to make out if it is a whisky or cognac. Ruth, go on girl I enjoy your series.

Beautiful presentation, and now I’ve heard *everything*: Japanese being spoken with a Scottish accent 😅❤️! Related to that: I have had Suntory To-Ki, which is, of course, labelled “Japanese Whiskey” here because it’s not truly “Scotch” (although it *is*, fine blended stuff) 🙂. I have some of The Macallan ❤️ - it and the Ardbeg An Oa are my two favorites, so far. Love Glenfiddich, which is the first single-malt most Americans encounter (believe it was first imported to the U.S. in 1962). Still the best way to discover if single-malt Scotch is your “thing” 🙂! I love The Glenlivet, also, but on a blind taste-test I can’t tell it apart from Glenfiddich 🤪. Most unfortunate that you couldn’t tour Macallan this time - I had read somewhere that it does require a reservation, as you discovered! I have an obvious question that I had thought you might have answered: Why are so many Scottish distilleries “labelled” with a whitewashed wall, with the name in huge black block letters? Is that a legal requirement? I had originally thought that it was a thing only on Islay, but I see that at least some of the Speyside distilleries follow this convention, as well 🙂. Now, I have to go find your website so I can read your biography - for some reason, I never think of Scots as being blonde, yet here you are looking for all the world like a Norwegian 😂 … until you begin speaking 🥰! Thanks again for another lovely visit to the Scottish countryside - I would love it all, including the rain, as long as it was Summer 😅! As for Winter - well, that is why we have Scotch whiskey 🥃❤️! Steve Dinges Mesa, Arizona, United States of America Note: Arizona is GMT minus 7, always, which is why I am hitting the pages at such seemingly odd times 🙂. It’s almost 6 PM on Sunday February 18 as I write this 🙂.

Thanks for watching the video from Arizona, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm not too sure about the white walls. I know on Islay they used them for the boats as they used to move the whisky via the sea.... If you find out, please do let me know!

Speyside and Moray are a home from home for me as I have been visiting and holidaying in this part of Scotland for 40 years. I have friends who worked in both the distilleries and the cooperage. I have visited the Spey to fish for Atlantic Salmon the only native Salmon species in the Spey although a few rouge Pink Salmon have been spotted in the last few years. The other sea going migratory fish in the river are Sea Trout which are highly prized also. I have actually fished the beat down to the Iron bridge at Aberlour without success but a friend who arrived late caught one on his first cast. I have also fished near to Rothes and did hook and land a 20lb Springer the most highly prized catch of all. I was never a fan of Whisky growing up but on my last night in Campbeltown ( another famous Whisky town) the locals put on a Whisky tasting evening for me. My favourite was a speyside malt matured in a Sherry cask which I did buy a numbered bottle and consumed with friends over a couple of very good nights. I did have a collection of Glenmorangie whisky many years ago but I gave up on that once you get to the point where bottles go for silly money. A shameless plug on my part. It was my first posting as a Bank Manager so will always be in my memories even though it is 20 years this past year since I moved from there to Stornoway. Our tasting was put on by the guy who took over the whisky store in the town that very day. I had met him in the afternoon in the Bank and had let slip I was not the biggest fan and he promised to have something for me. He brought an 80% proof dark rum that I can only describe as tasting like liquid molasses with heat. I did try to behave myself as the next day was the big pack and drive up the road for the boat but luckily I also had a removal company doing most of the hard work. Oh so many memories.@@ruthaisling

Ruth I like all of the Glenfarclas malts, however, I do really enjoy the 105, with no more than a couple of drops of water, no ice or other additives. You are certainly a remarkable lady, I am going up to Nairn for a week in November and will make a beeline for Craigellachie, what was the name of the inn owned by the Japanese man? I always try to visit a couple of distilleries on each trip, my favourite being the very compact Edradour distillery near Pitlochry. ❤️

I worked through an agency at three for three whisky companies working at bottling halls. Grants at Bellshill was the best in my opinion the place that bottles the Glenffidich .The others being Diageo Shieldhall too much caramel in the Johnnie Walker, and Chivas Dunbarton the place that bottles the Glenlivet. I am a fan of the smaller independent distilleries I must admit though . Sometimes I have had a better experience visiting some of the smaller distilleries. They are all different in many ways .

My dad loved whiskey and I used to buy him bottles of the most famous whiskeys generally, his favourite was Glenfiddich but he liked rarer ones. I miss sourcing and buying them for him and there is no one in the family to carry down his whiskey loving traits but whenever I meet tourists(especially those from India) I will buy them whikeys they have never tried in his memory. Thank you for this Ruth! Brought back amazing memories seeing the sights; from my 2018 trip to Speyside (stayed in Elgin). You live in a beautiful country! Glenfiddich is a beautiful distillery with all the flowers in summer, as is Aberlour, Glenlivet, Blavenie, Cragganmore, Macallan and Glenfarclas. Each distillery has it's individual beauty, uniqueness to it and being my favourites, they get drank often. Balvenie, Aberlour and Macallan all did driver packs back in 2018... P.S. I thought Cape Town had 4 seasons in 1 day until I visited the Highlands... no comparison!
