One Piece is one of the biggest anime ever. Bigger than attack on titan. Bigger than bleach and Naruto. Yet I have never seen the anime. I love to joke and make fun about how bad it is just to be a part of the ongoing banter that goes on within the community on twitter and tiktok.
Yet with the live action show coming out. I felt drawn to give it a try. And... I kinda really liked it. Like a lot. So this video explores that.

    I was a bit sad they didn't go with the manga explanation of how the Butler wanted to kill Kaya. Since in the Manga It made a lot more sense. I do understand that they had time consrtaines with the episode but it's just sad. Other than that it was great.

    I just had to correct, the pacing is hot trash but the whole of almost every episode is completely canon. There is only some filler in the beginning of the series actually, up to around skypiea arc.

    As a longtime Usopp fan, even though I liked the live-action, I couldn't help but feel that they did him dirty. I kind of understand why they changed the scope and the stakes of the Syrup Village, but removing his internal conflict and the "How shameful" moment during his fight with Chu was absolutely unforgivable . Usopp is very shallow compared to his manga counterpart.

    I agree. Perhaps, they changed his fight against Chu in order to not overcomplicate the story. And maybe focus on solving Nami's personal issues. Anyway, there will be other moments in the story that show Usopp's struggles. P.S. During the Arlong arc, I personally missed Zoro's inner monologue. When he was wounded and almost lost to the fishmen, but kept fighting. Zoro remembered Mihawk and said that he was "not allowed to die". P.P.S. I LOVE this live action.

    In regards to Usopp, his whole thing is constantly feeling lost in the shuffle compared to the rest of the crew and how he copes with it, while actually contributing in subtle ways to the point they do need him and would go to war to back him up.

    I very much see that. And on paper it sounds amazing. Its just in the efforts to set that up it seems he is a little forgotten or given the least the go off of in the first season. The actor does an amazing job though. The character is likable. Just lacking substance in contrast.

    Personally I believe Usopp's problem is not lack of courage. It is lack of confidence. He is afraid in the dangerous situations he gets into. Not being afraid is not a mark of courage. Courage is being afraid and doing it regardless.

Oh yeah you were right to mock your friend about this. I'm a One piece fan and I absoluetly understand why they condensed it and what was the purpose of the live action. Also point out to him that Oda himself approved everything so He won't have much chances to argue...

    As a One Piece fan - I think you were absolutely right to mock your friend's attitude. The live action is an adaptation, if they did it exactly like the anime it would not work at all. I remember how scared I was when they announced it but I am so glad that it turned out to be good. And I feel like it is not exactly supposed to be only for fans, on the contrary I personally feel like this is the best way to introduce someone completely new to the amazing world of One Piece. I see so much people, who would never ever check out anything One Piece, watching the live action and at least enjoying it and that warms my heart so much, that this alone is for me a good reason to absolutely love this adaptation, esspecially with how faithfull it is and how much heart it has. Heck, my dad who absolutely hates everything anime, esspecially everything I like (he's so stubborn sometimes) got so sucked into the live action that he basically binged it. I personally am not a fan of the butler arc either, but I feel like it was necessary from the character introduction standpoint. It could be a little shorter in the live action in my opinion though ^^; And Arlong Park could use this little extra time, but that is just my personal opinion ^^; Overall, you can treat the whole 1 season of live action as a prologue to the story, I am honestly very excited to see how they handle the next seasons, because there is some quite challenging stuff coming but I am so happy that the live action exists and can be a way to give people "a taste" so they can see if the story is for them instead of having to commit to 50+ episodes of very wacky anime that in the end they might not get into ^^ P.S. Also just a little correction - It's not One Piece that has 1/3 filler, It's Naruto, One Piece surprisingly doesn't have that much filler, just an episode here and there, and a lot of them I personally enjoyed (they had a time where they done a lot of crossover episodes with a show Toriko, they also have one with Toriko and Dragon Ball). So the filler amouts to rather 1/11 at best and half of those are just a fun crossover episodes, The rest I would consider easily skippable (and yeah, I watched them all because I'm a completionist). One Piece rarely resorts to fillers because they took a different approach to avoid catching up to manga - they just dragged out the canon events, that's why you hear a lot that One Piece in anime form has a pacing issues. But I honestly do prefer the dragging over the fillers (and sadly, with this kind of long running series that isn't devided on seasons, you will have one of the other, as much as it would be nice if they didn't have to do that, they can't have a huge breaks in broadcasting, and due to the differences in the medium that are anime and manga, anime would catch up really quickly and that would mean whey would either have to go on a hiatus and wait possibly few years untill they can adapt and release more episodes or go other route - either filler or dragging of the material so they can fit one chapter per episode which normally would not be enough to fill the 20 minutes when animated. This is also why Fullmetal Alchemist was not really good and went completely separate route then manga at one point - there was just no more manga to adapt so they either could finish the series somehow or wait. And problem with waiting is, well... the recency bias. A lot of shows from that time were not finished and won't be ever finished because they were quickly forgotten. The Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood on the other hand was made when the manga already finished, that's why it came out genuinely better. So yeah, as much as I personally hate fillers sadly they are sometimes absolutely necessary to keep pumping out episodes every week in their choosen format. But I want on a tangent here, overall, I personally did not have that much issues with the pasing, I enjoyed the anime and the live action and am beyond happy that more people get to enjoy this world so that is a huge success and win for the One Piece ^^ P.S.2, sorry for the long comment 😅 And for my bad english, it's not my first language 😅

  • @DareToEntertain

    @DareToEntertain

    Thank you for the comment and your English was perfect. To the first paragraph. I absolutely agree to everything you said. Every part. To the second, saying "its a third filler' Was a deliberate writing choice to be an inflammatory statement from someone who hasn't seen the show. I know One Pace shortens the show to something that completely nullifies that statement by cutting exactly what I say is "Filler". Its more so in a video like this. When writing from a perspective. I like to write it a little more black and white for the shorter video essays I do. If I was to make it grey and add in every exception to every statement it then prolongs the video to 20-30min. So yeah, I know the filler is mostly in padding onto every episode. Just thought its a common and funny remark to have represent someone who refuses to watch the show.

    So, a little neat story about Oda. When he first started the One Piece manga in 1997, Oda didn't think that a live-action One Piece adaptation would be possible. Like a lot of people, he thought it'd be too silly and fantastical to adapt into live-action. But then he saw Stephen Chow's *Shaolin Soccer* and *Kung Fu Hustle* . Oda mentioned in an interview that when the One Piece live action adaptation was greenlit, he was adamant that Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle would be some of the live action's inspirations when it comes to setting the tone and feel of the show.

    As a One Piece fan - the live action is a big W for me because I can definitely see many new fans coming in for the show, and definitely many would want to look into the anime for it. Other than the fish eye lens and some weird camera angle shots I love how they casted everyone so perfectly. though the kids were a bit hit and miss for me but they played well. I also love how they made the theme a bit darker than the anime because lets be real, piracy is not as colorful. but yea the colour grade reminds me too much of pirates of the caribean that it wasnt so unique. I barely could see everything. As a Zoro fan - I love it. Mackenyu is portraying it like a samurai esque but still willing to go with the jokes and stuff. actually in the anime zoro he does smile and stuff but usually he gets the boke part of the joke and the one that easily gets mad, but never loud. so I'm happy with the portrayal of zoro here, im just happy there are more sword fighting scenes for zoro hahaha. Watching the live action action reignited my love for the characters and even made me like nami more, im not really a fan of nami and usopp. so I think the live action is a big W.

    Yeah I never understand the criticism about Zoro LA's monotone voice. He is stoic, calm and cool. And he was a killer before meeting Luffy. It makes sense for that adaptation. We still don't know if the writers and directors intend for Zoro to get lighter with every season. Either way a big win with Mackenyu, he is amazing and a phenomenal actor and stunt man. Mackenyu steals the shows by his presence only and makes a huge impact. His performance can be hard for some to grasp or appreciate. Zoro LA has that loyal and dominant presence throughout the show. Mackenyu played Zoro stoicism excellently but also succeeded in having that sharp intensity underneath. And just through subtle expressions he communicated Zoro resolved perfectly. A truly quiet intense performance which is hard to pull off. And don't forget he has a lot of scenes of him smiling and enjoying being in the group.

  • @hs5hen

    @hs5hen

    @@CosmoLav Agreed. In my opinion Zoro is only comfortable enough with the straw hat crew to joke around and be loose, but outside of that he tends to be a bit cold and ready to kill anyone suspicious. He then grows to be a more serious character later on in the story as we learn more of him, like the time with Usopp's mutiny or when he took in Luffy's pain. It's just in the live action, we are already shown what kind of person he is and how he would think.

    You were right to mock your friend, Joe, he's a schmo. For me as a big fan of One Piece it's: manga > live action > anime. All are still pretty great but the manga's king (parts of the latest anime arc "wano" is the exception). Would love to see vagabond / berserk get a live action as they both havent received a proper adaptation yet, vagabond would have to be done by the Japanese obviously and berserk would need a larger budget than this one piece live action but it would be glorious if pulled off correctly. Monster would be a great budget choice, needs great actors tho.

    As a One Piece fan, I loved what they did with the show as it kept most of the events the same and they spent the money actually building the sets, loved the camera movements. I have nitpicks of course but in the end, the series was good, it introduced this story to a lot of people who either resisted the series or didn't knew about it so I'm happy and I want more. Also, as a Graphic Designer, you were totally right in making fun of your friend because that's exactly why a lot of japanese live action adaptations have failed (with Gintama being one I would say is an exception), animation shines in using angles that just ain't possible on, say, photography, because the body start to look uncanny as you have to force perspective and manipulate a lot of light to get it as the drawing. So DUH it had to change to be good, and also money ain't infinite, this things cost money, so it was never gonna be as long, time had to be constricted, but as long as the series sticked to the themes and the characterization that made this series so important for so many people, by all means, just keep the main points. I actually really like that each character gets 2 episodes and what happens in one almost mirrors the second, for me, it worked great for the Syrup Village Arc, as the manga version goes on for a bit longer but also displays better qualities for Usopp that don't shine as much in the live action. But the one that suffers a bit more would for me be Arlong Park, with some of Nami's backstory (like the explanation for Nojiko's tattoos or Genzo's influence on Nami) being expanded, and I think that would've been solved if the series didn't had that cut from 10 to 8 episodes, as the final scene with the barrel and the crew proclaiming their dreams would've happen later in the story, but with that cut that was also the best scene for the end of the season.

    Your friend does indeed deserve mocking, especially if he's a fan of the anime. It's borderline unwatchable because instead of doing "filler seasons" they do 1 minute of progress each episode, with 20+ minutes of filler, so you can't really skip it. In comparison, the live action is a much better product already, and this was while covering the time when the anime was way behind the manga and therefore didn't need to put filler every single episode. Despite cutting some content they compensate with some interesting and coherent choices so I think it won't take long before the live action humilliates the anime.

    I still hate it anyway and am not afraid to say that. This Luffy is full of toxic positivity Good costumes, but the character design is laughable and looks cheap. It's W**e as f*ck These guys are cosplayers not actors. No (came to life anime characters) we are much more forgiving of animated characters than real people/actors. That's exactly why it doesn't work. So all the sympathy that these characters have in anime is gone. And maybe it is time to admit.. the beginning of OP is not that good as fans remember... BUT this adaptation is not simply trash, because i cleary can see they tried. But failed anyway. This is just ridiculous, because it is not possible to portray the epicness, the goofyness and just the fun the anime One Piece has. Because with real people the suspension of disbelief is gone.

    @@oshdi8589 I think many fans right now are lying to themselves because they don't wanna admit it is awful, because One Piece is so great for so long and they don't want another "faild adaptation"... It failed in generally also because there are rules for good story telling. These character portrails of the Strawhats are likeable but more annyoing then likeable.. the suspension of disbelief doesn't work in RL like in Anime. And this show follows modern politics, like the wokeness of characters which influecence the behavior or an audience and turn people into assholes. That's why i don't like it. A show that is fun.. doesn't mean it's good. Like million of players around the world of GTA and Call of Duty.. you know what i mean? Fun is not everything !

    @@GirlofCulture I know what you mean. But clearly they did their best, and it came out to be “the best” in certain terms. You can’t just say that ppl are afraid to say they hate it, and they’re lying to themselves. They genuinely like it as there’s the potential to. You’re kinda letting your preference overcome your views in ppl’s views. My confidence and knowledge of English isn’t enough to extend my thoughts so I’ll leave just this bit. Hope you understand what i mean.
