I was also impressed with the arc they gave Koby; that seen where he talks to Garp about the hypocrisy of the warlords system is one of my favourite scenes. It shows how he would develop into his Water 7 glow-up when he eventually returned to the manga.

I can’t believe a criticism for it was “Stuck too close to the source material”. Nothing ruins an adaptation more than when the adapters think they can improve upon something they’re adapting plot-wise.

I find it interesting the issues you found because I had an opposite reaction to the Garp and Koby story line, I was so happy when I realized Garp would be chasing them because to me I felt like it was Weird Garp didn't ever even try to prevent Luffy from setting off and becoming a pirate, and his bounty poster and becoming 'wanted' only after he'd proved to Garp he understood the consequences and wouldn't give up on his dream just gave me this victorious feeling all throughout the ending scenes.

I like the idea that Garp in this version is much more strict and serious is because he was present at Rogers execution. He was in charge of seeing his old rival and friend die and to stop the era of piracy but by allowing Roger to speak for as long as he did Garp unintentionally allowed the rise of the Great Pirate Era and is feeling guilt about it. In other words every death that has happened in the last 20 years by upstart pirates inspired by Roger is all Garps fault and he is aware of that.

Totally agree with you, I agree with your Garp point. I additionally couldnt stand Coby here, especially the part where Garp says leave us he leaves but stands outside the door listening to what Mihawk and Garp are talking about after Garb called him out on it before saying its a nasty habit he had by ease dropping on someones conversation, it feels like they used Coby for fillers, like he sees Usopp and says he believes Usopp that pirates are at the mansion, goes to investigate and does absolutely nothing. Its probably just me but I couldnt stand Coby.

Instead of introducing Garp much too early, I'd have given Smoker the role of introducing us to some actually good marines and occasionally cutting back to him in Logue, taking care of business, introducing some of the philosophy of the world government and reacting to the emerging threat of the Straw Hats even before they actually arrive on Logue town. I think that would give Smoker a slightly bigger role and character instead of just having him randomly decide to chase down Luffy after Logue town, which would also be too similar to Garp's actions in season 1, making Smoker feel like Garp's replacement for season 2

The more I think about it, the more I realize that it was actually important for Roger to say the line. Like - the Show is called One Piece. The One Piece is continually referenced alongside the title of Pirate King. Maybe having Roger say the cryptic line himself would've been a good move. I think this mainly for new watchers - we don't really need the reinforcement, but placing that anchor point in the narrative for newcomers might have been a good idea

Anytime Luffy got hurt by a punch, I just assumed they were using low level haki, which could make sense with a character like Arlong. In my mind, the villains were stronger, and not Luffy weaker. A manga reader might love Luffy flexing on the villains, but it might seem a bit lackluster to new viewers. And I don’t think I’d want the fishmen to be any uglier. They may have been villains, but their motives were very human. While One Piece live action wasn’t perfect, I still had a good time.

eh, i kinda disagree on your take on the fishman. don't forget, they may be antagonists in arlong park, but, generally speaking, they are just normal dudes who want to get along with everyone else without getting discriminated against all the time. making them these grotesque monsters may have improved that one arc to some degree, but would have made it that more difficult to make them feel relatable and sympathetic for the rest of the series. so no, they made the right choice with making them look the way they do. although, as others have pointed out, what they could have done is improve the height of arlong and the rest a little in post. arlong especially looks just a little too puny to be a serious threat.

First 5 chapter were really hooking me up and surpassed my expectations, the changes were understandable. But as the Series went on some changes simply rubbed me the wrong way, such as: Sanji not seeing Zoro vs Mihawk, him taking such a back seat in "his arc", Nami not having the support from Nojiko and Genzo all those years (them actually hating her) and erasing any meaningful connection between her and Genzo. The Sh were a highlight, as expected, even though the script made it harder for them. I know the limited time affected many things but I just couldn't enjoy it that much at the end. Ig as long as it hooks other people to the franchise I'm fine with it.

I do agree this is a well done live action adaptation of One Piece. In fact I mostly like it and the "errors" are much less than the improvements. Errors worth to mention are for example that in this adaptation Buggy's feet can fly as well as the rest of his body when one of his main weaknesses is that her feet must stay in the ground or being held by someone else. Also and at the beginning during Roger's execution, the executioners halberds after piercing Roger's body just have blood in the tip, when it is expected they have stabbed him to death, which makes no sense since a few minutes later Alvida smashes the brain of a sailor. As for the "One Piece" thing Roger never says that name in his execution. The one who says One Piece in the anime version is a random man of the crowd. Roger final words translated to Japanese are: "My treasure? If you want it I'll give it to you. Find it! I have left all of this world in that place ..." he never said One Piece in that moment.

I wanna say that Luffy being nerfed is a strength rather than a weakness of the show. I genuinely think Oda has an issue with over powering his characters where he needs to just separate the characters constantly to avoid this issue. Where Luffy is off getting into hi-jinx while the weaker characters have battles because he’ll usually just overpower them, and then sometimes he’ll step in later and just win with no sweat. Overpowered characters are boring imo. He makes up for it with interesting characters/backstories (at least in the beginning of the series) and an amazing art style. But like this is why I don’t regard One Piece as highly as other anime/manga. There’s no stakes, the characters are too overpowered, he will (especially later in the series) sacrifice character development/a good story for a good fight scene, and makes the fight scenes way too long. Maybe the fight scenes being too long are more so an issue with the anime and not the manga. But I just got real tired of multiple episodes of the same god damn fight. Lmao he genuinely said at one point in an interview that he wrote a really good story with deep backstory that was interesting and then scrapped it because he thinks “young boys don’t want a good story, they want action.” Which is such a misguided take on his audience in general, and completely disregards their intelligence. It made me genuinely dislike Oda as a creator. He doesn’t write for himself, and he writes for such a shit take about what his audience wants. And that just makes me lose all respect for him. The highlights of the manga/anime and what a majority of people liked about the series was the heart and the story. The fight scenes were cool, but it’s not what made people keep coming back.

@@SolitaryLark man they are already pretty scary looking as is. Making then even more scary looking like he’s suggesting just feels like it loses the intent of fishmen. It leans far more into the fish part than a balance of fish and man.

They obviously skipped some fights for budget reasons but they got the spirit of it down. Cant see the show going very far because some of the material is near impossible to recreate live action. Definitely looking forward to a couple of cool seasons though.

Despite its flaws OPLA is strangely endearing. However, it doesn’t know how to calibrate its realistic violence scale with being campy and cartoony. The fishman gave me total 90s Power Ranger villain vibes. Regardless, the future seasons will be insane, i hope this show figures itself out.
