This series gives the blueprints on how to make a manga adaptation successful: 1. Get the original creator’s approval and involvement 2. Hire actors, writers, etc. that love and respect the source material 3. Find a balance between staying true to the content and adding unique changes

Garp subplot was great decision. (1) it glued all the plot together, (2) it inserted Koby vs Luffy dichotomy, (3) it introduced the "next generation" theme, (4) it's the only story arc that ended, because th strawhats journey are only started, (5) they used it to narrate many things about the world and politics, (6) they used the existing decorations twice, (7) they wrapped up all Koby vs Helmeppo coverstory and left more space for the Alabasta and Water 7 arc.

yeah it's a good idea to wrap up their story in ss1 instead of just letting them disappear after ep1 and reappear again in ss2

What's amazing is the new wave of fans brought in to One Piece because of the live action. It did it's job, the new fans are curious of the source material and tried it because of the live action. This is the era of One Piece.

(I have seen the whole video.) Honestly, I think the big thing they did right, was put actual EFFORT into this, straight-up. I pinch myself even now, being honestly astonished that this WORKED, let alone this well.

Alita battle angel and speed racer are pretty good though

Ruruoni Kenshin has proven that live actions could work.

Alice in borderland did it first. With no buge fanbase like one piece but strongly competing with huge series like sweet home and squid game for global chart. Deserved credit.

The thing with Alice in Bordenlands is that is not wacky or ridiculous like OP, is really normal that why nobody care.

Zoro and Nami Together in the series it worked because they are both very cynical and practical in the serie! Zoro in the manga is more romantic, in the sense of a dreamer, and even too trusting in other people's words. BUT... Nami is the one who knows her limits and the strength of her allies, as well as their good and bad characteristics... She always knows how to exploit their strength through their weaknesses.

I loved the Garp and Koby parts, those were some of my favorites. I’m saying this as someone who’s been afraid of delving into OP before due to the sheer volume of it. Now I’m starting the manga and anime.

I liken any adaptation to trying to paint an oil painting with water colours or crayons. Novels, comic books, manga and anime offer the author completely different sets of tools to engage and grip the audience. And because those tools are vastly different from medium to medium, something that works in one medium doesn't necessarily translate well to another. Take the literary device of the "inner monologue" for example. It's great when you read it in novels, comics and manga, but using it in live action and animation means you are going to lose your audience. So, when adapting the inner monologue you need to find other ways to get your point across. Going back to the analogy: Imagine having the task to paint the Mona Lisa with water colours. How do you do it? You could try to do a one-to-one recreation of the painting but that won't really do justice to the Mona Lisa because oil colours blend in different ways than water colors. What you will get is a pale imitation of the Mona Lisa. This is why most Japanese live-action adaptations don't work by the way. They transfer the source material *exactly* as it is on screen and the result is often not something you can take seriously. So painting the Mona Lisa with water colors doesn't quite work if you do it accurately. What actually works is using the water colors and the base of the Mona Lisa to create in your own way, with your own set of tools, something that invokes the same *feeling* you get while seeing the original Mona Lisa. So the adaptation is now not a question of "how do I translate the original on screen" but rather "what does the original make me feel". Ultimately, what does the original *mean* for me? This is why most Western adaptations don't work. Most of them are made by people who just don't get the source material and in some cases even actively hate it. And their lack of connection shows on screen. The main reason the Cowboy Adaptation didn't work was because it's clear that the people who made it were not fans of the original. They didn't get excited when Spike displayed his unique brand of martial arts on the first episode, almost dancing to Yoko Kanno's iconic music. They didn't laugh at Fay Valentine's introduction. They didn't get shocked when they found out Spike's past. They didn't cry at the final "Bang" on episode 25 and didn't bawl their eyes out when "The real folk blues" was heard one final time on screen. Ultimately, Cowboy Bebop didn't actually *mean* anything to them. It was just a paycheck to them. And their indifference showed on screen at the abomination that ended up being the end result. Because the creators felt nothing, the audience felt nothing. The main reason the live adaptation of One Piece worked was that the source material was important to the people who made it. Matt Owens, the show's producer has gone on record to say that One Piece saved his life and many of the actors involved either were fans of the franchise (Mackenyu & Emily Rudd) or became invested afterwards (Godoy). Ultimately, the people who made the Live-Action adaptation of One Piece did a good job of transferring the feeling of reading One Piece on screen because it *meant* something to them. They each a piece of love and their soul on screen and the result was something brilliant. They didn't just please old fans they bought new fans into the franchise because they knew One Piece was amazing and knew that if they made something that gave you the feeling of reading One Piece, other people would find it amazing as well. Was the One Piece adaptation perfect? Not by a long shot. It was however a perfect representation of how One Piece actually *feels* and for that it will also have a special place for me. If for nothing else in that it got the people close to me to *finally* understand what was so special about that weird "Japanese pirate cartoon" I've been watching for the past 20 years. Painting the Mona Lisa with water colours is not possible. The best you can hope for is your water painting bringing out the same feelings as the Mona Lisa. And making your little brother who bumps into your drawing realise that the Mona Lisa is something truly unique and special.

I liked the Garp part! And it’s nice to settle that early on. I loved it because of the different perspective but thought it was cool change. It didn’t feel like anything that changed the whole underlying plot. But I can see what your saying. 😊

It changed the end of Enie Lobby that's for sure. They totally dropped the ball. I don't mind seeing Garp & having him named, but them letting everyone know he's Luffy's grandfather is what I have an issue with. The Marine chasing Luffy around East Blue should have been Smoker since he's stationed in Logtown & Logtown is the end of the East Blue saga. Plus they already ruined his first interaction with Luffy when Luffy asks for directions & Smoker doesn't know Luffy is a pirate yet. I'm not saying the live action is bad because I really enjoyed it, but there's several things they've already written themselves in a hole for now.

Imagine if HBO adapted Vinland Saga

2:13 Please i want those. Such a MASTERPIECE. I remember reading the manga when i was a kid because my aunt gave the entire volume (in her view as a doctor and i once dreamed of becoming a doctor and the mc is a doctor) she said i should read those. In 13 yo kid perspective, the first scene Tenma trying hard to save a kid after the whole debacle of morality made me appreciate doctor very much and then the whole manga turned to become a physicological thriller MASTERPIECE and i LOVED it SO MUCH. I was still scared of how menacing Johan's face was. GOAT

I get what u say about comics being easier to adapt. But comics just like manga can get very insane sometimes as well whether it be the different worlds or characters

the one piece is real as for other good LA adaptations Bleach movie and kenshin series of movies are very good

The part about the themes and messages is the biggest part. If DBZ or Death Note(didnt see the Bebop LA) even tried to be close to the source it would be way better but it wasnt anything fans were expecting coming in and frankly not a good story on its own

I cringe whenever I hear people say op breaks the curse.. for sure it’s a great adaptation, but it is by no means the only one. There are plenty of non-mainstream great adaptations. ‘Moving’, ‘Weak hero’, to name a few…

Alita is indeed an adaptation of anime, because they had this Connelly character that didn't exist on manga. The adaptation wasn't great to my taste, though.

So people are correct in saying One Piece isn’t the first anime adaptation that didn’t suck. Alita Battle Angel, Speed Racer, and Ruroni Kenshin were all adaptations that were pretty good. But IMO One Piece is the first one that was so good that random people who are not fans of the source material or even the anime/manga medium were drawn to it and loved it. The others seemed to just be successful among people who were already fans of the source material. And I think this is why people say that One Piece is the one that broke the curse and not any of these others.

It's Funny how the most least anime that I expect to have an adaptation become the most decent and successful one😂

I really can't say that death note was a good try at a less crazy effects adaption. They changed the characters too much. It's been a while since I saw it, so I might be remembering wrong. Original light was a genius, dedicated student that was super careful about keeping the death note a secret. Live action Light told a girl he recently met, all about the death note to get in her pants. One piece had been discussed for years about a live action. Indeed, we weren't sure it would ever get one. Oda was pretty picky when he'd get offers. So it makes sense that when he finally approved, it would be good. Until this, the closest you could get were the stage shows. Can be somewhat cringy at first, but you soon just have fun watching.

When they showed Matt Owens the scene where light screams in the live action he stated one thing he doesn’t agree with Hollywood is they try to make everyone likable. So instead of giving the villain characters in the one piece live action a sob story we see them just be evil. That is another reason it worked people were tired of the let’s makes villains sympathetic.

​@@soulsurfer7702I love One Piece villains because they're charismatic WHILE they're evil. Like Arlong is a bloody asshole, but he is fun to watch. Buggy became a fan-favourite in the future, but the Live Action made him a fan favorite IMMEDIATELY. Kuro was massively improved on, at least tonally. And Mihawk.... Bruh. Flawless. Every villain commanded the screen when they came on, be it with comedy or intensity or sheer character. More than anything, this show nailed the characters. That's my opinion anyway.

@@AliDableh And that is what Hollywood doesn’t get characters can still be likable ironically by simply being villains or antihero it could just be the actors performance half the time. Light would have actually been more likable if they kept his traits he has in the anime than making him some stereotypical nerdy guy who falls for the hot chick.

I miss Zoro's smirking when his excited for a fight, his a bit too stoic in the live action which made for example his challange to Mihawk a bit cringe. Altough the constant stoic nature works with Mihawk, even he smirked in the anime.

A smirk can be interpreted as "cocky". Zoro is confident, but not cocky. He challenged Mihawk for a fight to the death. It makes sense that he's serious. Oda approved of it when it easily can be reshoot if he disagreed. So it's all good to me. Yes, Oda did tell them to reshoot a couple of scenes that he didn't like, and they did.

Broo alita battle angel is a master piece..at least for me..ive read half of the manga and its pretty accurate and the directors and actors also nailed their character..and they also gives credit to the manga unlike edge of tomorrow whos pretending like the manga didnt even exist..the director didnt even mention all you need is kill manga during the interview and pretending like its their idea..while alita battle angel. the director and even the actors actress acknowledge the manga adaptation

Alita was great.

The real issue isn't that anime is too over the top. It's that when western studios try to adapt something, their go to is to localize it and try to make it more in line with what western audiences, in their minds, will enjoy. This is why comic book movies have had less issue for example because they were made here in the west. But manga and anime is a Japanese creation and so things they portray are more in line with their culture. Death Note for example has a good Japanese live action adaptation. What makes such adaptations tougher in Japan is that their film industry isn't as big and wealthy as Hollywood so most live action films are done on a tiny budget which is why they tend to not use CGI as much where as Hollywood will do everything in CG. Hollywood can make fantastic things easier because they just CG it where as most Japanese studios can't afford it as much and so are stuck with practical effects. I mean their highest grossing films are either completely animated or are of hr Kaiju variety. But again, it's the localization that has hindered not just some coming to the west but their love action adaptations. Look at many of the old anime English dubs. Like originally with DBZ they basically made Goku into Superman instead. I mean nothing in Dragon Ball is even really THAT different from anything from DC or Marvel as far as powers or visuals, but what does differ is the philosophy. Every super hero fights for justice and to protect the little guy. But many Shonen protagonists like Goku, Luffy, Natsu, etc, they don't fight to protect the innocent, they do so for just their friends and because it's fun. Most of these protagonists can seem selfish and they are, because Japan's values are different. That's not to say they think you should only look out for number one, but they don't push pure altruism as much as western heroes do. I mean on the outside one could see Luffy as a noble renegade fighting a corrupt system but no. He cares but for the strife that the regular people go through. He's simply going after what he himself wants. The only time he will get involved with an injustice is if it involves someone he cares about. He'd never bother with Buggy if he didn't come to like the mayor of that village and a dog. He would have ignored Arlong if it wasn't for her fact he made Nami cry. He would have slept peacefully as Alabasta burned if not for befriending Vivi. The list goes on. No western hero would be like this. A villain comes in and threatens the world or what ever and just for that, the hero will stop them because they want to protect randoms. This is just one big reason anime had such a rocky start here and why live action is having that now.

Change Kuina's face make her beautiful

The curse has already been broken, one piece is just already insanely popular. All you needed is to respect the author's story and characters, something that some of these showrunners and directors still ignore. This is not to discredit this series, but kind of insane that you're ignoring the other good adaptions The formula is out there and netflix one piece is just more proof that works

I think ALL the changes came for the best. Better than the anime. Don krieg is boring... Thank god they killed him off screen. Thats nice that they give mihawk an actuall real reason to go to baratie. And in the same way, he is only there because he wanted...so he didnt obey any order.

Gotta be honest I’m super jaded towards Netflix. I genuinely adore this adaptation and think it’s nowhere near hit its stride yet. I think as soon as it does Netflix will cancel it, because that’s what they do with their best things 😢

I think with this series it’s a bit different because the age of the actors you can’t really say I see this going 12 seasons and Emily is supposed to be in her early 20s in the show wouldn’t be believable. All there top tire shows are ending I don’t see them cancelling this anytime soon and with the rumor of Disney rebooting pirates of the Caribbean to destroy one piece live action I see them giving it at least 6 seasons.

Sure they could do that but we also have to consider that sometimes actors want to do other acting jobs and not just be known as those characters maybe in 6 years Inaki will want to venture into other projects and not just be known as Luffy. Or what if it will take even more than 12 seasons for them to adapt everything. So I think our mindset should really be where would be a good place to end in the middle if that makes sense instead of Netflix shouldn’t just end it after 6 seasons.

to be fair death note failed because they completely changed the source material in every way. so much so to where misa was the brains of the operation. if they had done it like the original story it would have been massively succesful especially with willem defoe as ryuk, thats just perfect casting. but hey ya go woke ya go broke

Live actions that are adapted from anime are bad once a comparison is made .. Since the original "One Piece" is already dog shot, the live action doesnt seams so bad..

Honestly, Live Action One Piece did the impossible for me, it made me want to see more GOOD live action anime. In fact, you know what? If Fox Century (oh, I'm sorry "20th Century Studios" tHAnkS DIsnEy!!1!) is willing to redeem themselves, I would be down with seeing a new live action Dragon Ball that is actually true to the series. And hopefully they start from the beginning of the series instead of Z. It would probably be an exclusive to Disney+ since they own "20th Century Studios". Hell, if it does turn out good, then that would be ONE good show Disney can have for their shitty streaming platform. You're welcome, Bobby!

The score is hmm... better than most Hollywood output in the 21st century. That's not a tall bar to clear at all, though. Sometimes it's worthy-the composers understood leitmotifs and used them, albeit kind of sparingly. But even at its best, it would be considered mediocre if this were the 80s, maybe even the 90s. Even the best themes have limited complexity and effectively loop after a couple of bars. The 90s anime score is infinitely more complex and melodic, as a quick example, avoiding repetition in classical 20th century Hollywood fashion. At its worst, the live action score is just as awful as most streamed TV soundtracks. Take a listen to the music during Sanji/Zoro's fishman fight and try to _pretend_ it's not pure, unadulterated drivel.
