I learned to code with Visual Basic 5 and later on 6 in the 90s. My friend and I would make games with ActiveX controls like radio buttons racing one another on a Form. Kids can make everything into a game and the levels of creativity children display towards everything is probably the fuel that keeps innovation going, if you can endure public school system attempt at destroying that creativity.

Warning: Long post. I say, both! Do what you’re passionate about and don’t prevent yourself from doing it even if you’re not good at it... But always be ok with the fact that your dream isn’t going to always be reality no matter how hard you work. In those cases, make an impact in ways that you CAN. If you suck at singing, don’t let that keep you from the karaoke mic! And if your dream is to be a singer, sure keep practicing, but know that’s it’s also totally ok if you end up being a songwriter or sound mixer instead. It’s been my dream to be a neurologist with an emphasis in behavioral neurophysiology... it’s a passion of mine and I feel that mental disorders are too stigmatized because people don’t understand the biological foundations for these legit diseases. But ya know, I suck at math and chemistry and basically anything I would need to get into medical school, so I basically just research what I can and spread the message among friends and family and everyone who is struggling, to know that they shouldn’t feel shamed and that there is hope that they can get better, and point them in the direction of those who can help. Tldr don’t let go of your passions, keep working at it, but remember it really is ok if you’re not good at what you’re passionate about. You still have purpose and value no matter what.

My story is so incredibly similar to yours man. I started making RPG Maker games in 2000 when Don Miguel translated RPG Maker 2000 and then eventually the 2003 version. I spent all my time making games and hanging out online, and then high school happened and I felt torn. I came across road blocks in my game because the processing power of RPG Maker 2003 couldn't handle the things I wanted to do... And with highschool, I had to leave my digital projects behind to fit in and experience my teenager years. It wasn't until after high school did I realize how much I missed it. The coding principles in RPG Maker actually flow a lot like javascript, so it wasn't long before I got into web design / flash action scripting based off my RPG Maker stuff. Fast forward through KZread and today, and well... That kid who made the rpg maker game ended up releasing a full blown game in Unity. Mind you I had an amazing team on board, but the adventure has been surreal. Hope all has been well since Vidcon!

when i was 7, in the 70s i used to code in machine language for my Z-80 motherboard, which i built from scratch, using wirewrapping. i made timers, alarms, simple games. etc. then i became a teen and got into music and left computers behind. i'm 55 now, but i did get a job 2 years ago which required me to learn coding. python. i was surprised at how advanced and easy it was to do stuff , esp compared to the assembly and BASIC/FORTRAN i knew as a kid. i was also impressed with the code editors that made it seem like i was cheating. i used visual studio.

Wow, that was super cool. I'm 13 now with 2ish years of python with me. I started a lot like you. I love to play video games always have and my dad one day told me I could learn to make them I was shocked and surprised. I got a book on python a month later and my dad said we would learn it together. Although just a day later he stoped I didn't I was too invested the first day I typed print("Hello World") it felt amazing. On my third day, I used inputs to make a mad-libs kind of story it was just awesome. Then I started playing games again leaving coding on the shelf because well it was boring and hard, I tried to pick up javascript and HTML but I left that as well. I didn't code a lot being 12 just played Fortnite with my friends because it was popular. Two days ago I was at my dad's and I tried to solve a Rubik's cube but I couldn't so I promised myself I would code one. Two days later, I made a 3D Rubiks cube that I'm quite proud of using a few python libraries. I hope I keep going like you did and maybe one day create an AI like yours. If you've read this much thank you and have a great day.

@jshowa o To some maths is easy, to some it is hard. Tell me again, who is right? You, me or anyone else out there, we all have different circumstances and different experiences. Then why should my opinion on what hard is should be your reality? Your life is your life. If you want to accept the status quo and live life based on someone else's opinion, it is completely up to you, my friend. Some would rather not.

  • @AzwadAbid

@jshowa o I "am" an engineer, and I did graduate as a topper from the entire university. So, yeah, I am from STEM field and will tell you right away "Don't accept what others say". When I started, people told me I would never score. Cause it is too damn difficult to score. If I listened to their opinion as my reality, I would reach where I am today (plus luck as well). To some, STEM is easy, to some, it is not. There is no ONE SINGLE WAY TO DEFINE IT. Some can cook easily and some make a mess every time. That does not mean cooking is hard. All I am saying is this, don't listen to others opinion as a hard fact. Or else, you are asking for a miserable life. Cause the usual consensus is that life is difficult and everything we do has to be difficult. If you want to argue about it, please carry on. I won't bother replying anymore. Have a nice day. You have my best of wishes. May your life be easier and easier every day.

I started coding on my commodore 64 when I was 9 years old. Somehow it was easier getting into programming then, as it booted straight into BASIC when you turned it on. There was no internet, and I knew noone that did programming, or even knew what it was. I just read some code listings in the back of a magazine and tried to type it in and see what got out. By the time I was 12, I had access to a 386 PC and after playing with QBASIC for a while my dad brought home 27 floppy disks containing the full version of Boreland C++ that he had borrowed from a software engineer at his at work together with a big fat "learn C++" book. I didn't know that C++ was supposed to be difficult even for grownups so I just learned it :-D Funnily enough this kind of proves your point. If everyone around you tell you something is difficult you will be discouraged. After learning C and C++ at such an early age, the way was basically paved for me. I dropped out of computer science at university because I was bored to death. I had 10 years of programming experience after all. I got a job at a local TV station writing games that went on national TV instead.

Can relate to this on many levels. For me trying to get into animation and constantly getting knockbacks and people lacking in encouragement over the years. It is hard to keep that passion and intrest going. Good to see you stuck with it.

Great story and I'm glad you're enjoying doing what you do now. I've got a similar story. Started with Game Maker, really wanted to make 3D games, ended up creating a 3D animation tool for Game Maker but I unfortunately lost it in a laptop recovery and it took me out the game making scene for a while. Luckily GML is very similar to other languages so I managed to pick them up and get back into games again.

So good to hear this story! I can't tell you the number of times I've read on game forums or coding forums that it's too difficult, you're over your head, don't bother, there's no chance of making a successful game when all I want to do is sit and code and learn and have fun doing it, and am just looking for some advice on a coding bump that I'm experiencing. There are too many nay-sayers and not enough people that just say "go for it". THANK YOU for the video!!!

Yeah, I've had moments like Jabrils mention as well. Really knowledge-able people that I respect that tells me something akin to "yeah that sounds really hard and not really worth it you shouldn't bet on being able to do that". The best computer science teacher I've ever had told me no when I asked him if I should pursue the project I was obsessed with any further. It was almost ten years ago. I've tried building prototypes and given up on it so many times since. Would be nice if anyone besides myself understood the point or believed in it...
