I Tested £1 Kitchen Gadgets - ft a Semi-Automatic Hand Whisk

Ғылым және технология

Phoebe found a batch of £1 kitchen gadgets, pretty handy ones in general too on paper. Some of these kitchen utensils are many multiples more in price typically, but with these basic versions, although perhaps not the best quality finishes, do they still do the job? Watch on and find out!

    I am still laughing at how you used the steamer. Here is how they work: Put a small amount of water in the bottom of the pot. Turn on the heat and bring water to a simmer. Put your steamer in the pot. Put you veg in the steamer. Put A LID on the pot. Steam veg until tender. I have been using one of these for the last 40 odd years and they are wonderful.

    Those egg beaters were a standard growing up, and in my kitchen as an adult. Except they were better made, more sturdier than the 1 pound special shown. Then hand held electric beaters came out....still, often times the old fashioned egg beater was used, due to ease of use, grab and go, give a good wash, done! Now those were in my Grand mother's and Grand aunt's and Great Grandmother's kitchen...LOL!

    Ummm...Barry...The steamer has feet on the bottom that are ment the set on the bottom of your pot. It should sit inside the pot not on top, you put too much water in. About 1 inch of water, steamer, veg, and a lid on top, set to medium heat and you will have fully steamed veg in 10 min. Give it another try. It also works in the instant pot.

  • @mrbarrylewis
    @mrbarrylewis2 жыл бұрын

    Alright I was probably quite harsh on the steamer / colander, it had feet after all so could collapse, but the handle falling off is a little scary, didn't want to use a lid as it was more about it fitting / not falling in but realise you could let it fall in on itself to create it's own one. That said it's not supposed to sit on top of boiled eggs.... and ultimately it did work! So, the tea bag strainer that actually did the opposite, was definitely the worse.... but for £1, what a bargain! Enjoyed this? Get your popcorn and check out the other kitchen gadget testing videos to date kzread.info/dash/bejne/mnl3o9qJqNbKndI.html

They take steaming an hour, so I put balls of foil on the bottom of the legs to raise the basket up higher so I don't have to refill the water quite so often! You just need to know how to use it. This video proves that the Barry family are not destined to be world class chefs!🤣 it’s also surprising how many vintage kitchen gadgets you’ve never seen before. Don’t get me wrong though, I love you guys! 💖💖 There’s a trick to using the magic whisk. It shouldn’t have taken 8 mins to beat egg whites with it, you needed to have used it like you would use a fork as a whisk.

  • @tncorgi92
    @tncorgi922 жыл бұрын

    The egg beaters reminded me of childhood when I would play with utensils in my grandmother's kitchen. I always managed to get my fingers stuck in the egg beaters. I'll never understand why I kept doing that, you'd think I would have learned after the first couple of times.

    I don't feel like testing the magic whisk against an electric one was fair, it should've been against a handheld whisk

    Exactly. There are right tools for the right jobs. If lacking an electric whisk, a balloon whisk is used to beat egg whites. This little one is great to beat a whole egg so it’s even to add to a batch of dough or if you need to use half an egg in patisserie.

    I know it's not a kitchen gadget, but I'd love to see Barry test Sugru in the future. It's a mouldable glue with a large variety of uses, i.e.: - mounting fittings without drilling - insulating pot handles - creating wall hooks - creating/ fixing handles for pots, lids, tools & utensils 3:18 5:56 - repairing things (like cables, shoes, glasses, xbox controllers, etc), etc.

    Apart from the tea bag squeezer, all those gadgets can be pretty useful. As well, they were probably the cheapest versions possible and that absolutely affected how poor they were to use. Along with terribly short life span in your kitchen, The tea bag squeezer is just unnecessary. At least according to my Grandma: she thought it was actually wrong to squeeze a teabag, one was supposed to just steep the bags the correct amount of time and then gracefully remove them and dispose. If you want any otf the others, just buy good quality ones and they will work well for a long time before you need to recycle them. The video was quite fun to watch and I enjoyed your co-host. Well done Phoebe!

    We have used that steamer colinder thing for … 10-15 years now at home. It needs to go in a pot, with a lid on. Potatoes will be ready in ~30 min. Its very usable, unless you want to mash potatoes, than I boil them in water.

    Pretty sure the colander is suppose to be completely in the pan with the lid on, Hence the feet on it, Just don't add too much water that it boils them. That is way I have seen ALL those type of things done to steam. So surprise you didn't do it that way,

  • @pinkstarphoenix6182
    @pinkstarphoenix61822 жыл бұрын

    The steamer would work if you used it correctly. You are supposed to put a lid on the pan to contain the steam. Only put a small amount of water in the pan so the legs keep the veggies above the water. This is an old design. I've had many identical steamer baskets. They're great!

    16:45 Ah, that brings back memories! My grandmother had such a whisk, but made of metal, with a larger gear ratio (larger wheel and slightly longer crank), probably 50 years old or older and the speed that she had with it, was impressive 😂I looked at flea markets for such an old thing, but so far unfortunately without success. I have such a steaming basket, paid ten times more for it and seems to be a bit higher quality, but also slips completely into the pot, the manufacturer has written in the instructions that therefore only the bottom of the pot may just be covered with water. I then need to pack the pot lid over (or ... poof, all water gone in a minute or two) and the vegetables are steamed wonderfully.

  • @malexandrep6276
    @malexandrep62762 жыл бұрын

    Barry's attempt to use the steamer basket: the reason why packaging NEEDS proper instructions for use (including picture diagrams) - also the knife sharpener; when it says to put a bit of water in the slot - pretty sure they meant the slot in the plastic top where you run the knife through... (that way the water drips into the wheel part) hahaha funny though, thanks for the entertainment!
