    haha I was gonna say I bet moms with new babys hit the 50 hour mark sometimes. I remember going like two months and not once getting a full nights sleep , woken up constantly and for me it is hard to fall back asleep. that was when we were fostering and we had a 1 year old who was really goin thru it and a 2 year old with very high anxiety and ptsd. if one was actually asleep the other would be up and crying.if they were both finally asleep it would take us a little while to fall back asleep and pretty much as soon as we did one of them would be awake again. it was a nightmare for us having not ever had children I remember not even feeling human anymore after a while it was just so bad. I can deal with a couple nights no sleep but drag it on for months where you just sleep for sometimes minutes at a time and it is really hard. we got to the point where we would take turns literally staying in a hotel by ourselves to get a nights sleep. very expensive way to get some sleep but there was no other way ,probably the worst time of my life but ultimately it was worth it, I think we were needed at that time for them and we were there.

And 2-shits a living hell cause one day I sleep like normal then the next i can’t sleep and it often messes up with things I have planned to do because im really tired and or can’t talk that well and I tend to lose track of time quite fast

    In college I tried the Everyman sleep cycle, where you sleep 3.5-4 hours every night and take three 20-minute naps spread out throughout the day. After a while, I thought it worked well. That is until I went back to a normal sleep schedule. Then I realized what it was like to actually have energy again, my sleep paralysis stopped, and I was actually able to get things done. The thing about these sleep cycle hacks is that they take weeks, if not months for your body to adapt to, and if you break the sleep schedule at all, it becomes misery. I was never consistent enough to test if it actually worked, but I definitely went into denial thinking it was working when it realllllly wasn't at all. I will say though, 20 minute power naps in general are awesome! They can take practice, but once you make a habit of them, you feel amazing after waking up.

    I'm not an advocate for this sleep pattern, but I feel like the way to start a new sleep pattern is from the morning after being fully rested, starting on your naps even if you're not sleepy yet. By starting at night, you're jumping off from your most exhausted state, and now you're stuck continuously playing catch-up. By starting at midnight you're starting from a point of being awake for 12-16 hours without *any* sleep, and then jumping into naps.

    This video was eye-opening (quite literally)! I sleep 3-4 hours twice a day instead of 6-8 hours once a day because I work at 2am (overnight shifts). I've done this for years and simply found that this works better than attempting to go to bed at 5pm for me. That being said, some of the experiences in this video are actually a regular occurrence for me 🙈 It used to feel awful, but I learned how to live my life around it, and now it's not so bad. You never really stop feeling weird (since at any given time you're only running on a couple hours' sleep), but you do get used to experiencing/expecting the side effects of sleep deprivation. And yes, the world really does feel like a different place in the middle of the night when no one's on the roads, lol. On my days off I just sleep normally though, since let's be real--nothing beats the standard 8 hours of sleep 😴❤

    same! working in a night shift as well, and sleeping in biphasic for almost 3 yrs now. Some days I still feel half asleep specially during the 1st day when I got back from my off days as I usually sleep normal those days and my body is adjusting again. I also sort of feel the difficulty processing things at times as my head were kinda like floating, but my energy level are still the same, more even.

  • @Bad_At_Parties

    @Bad_At_Parties

    I can relate to this. Anyone that works the "midnight" shifts can, from 11 PM to anytime in the morning. It's not what humans are meant to do, and the more you do it the more you realize why. I used to be able to handle those shifts a lot better than I do now, but these days I truly feel it. Your body should be asleep, preparing for the day, but instead you're up and working and you will be trying to sleep later in the day when the sun's out and everyone else around you is active. It's backwards, and not sustainable. How I sleep usually differs as my energy levels can always fluctuate, since I can work 8 hours one day or a few 10s or 12s in a row the next, but I usually end up napping for a couple hours a bit after I get home, then spend the rest of the day up to early evening getting done what I need to do before then laying down for four or more hours before I have to leave to start my night shift. Not ideal, but it's the best solution I have to a bad work schedule. Lately I've had my normal hours plus overtime mandated, so I spent most of my time at work. When I get home I'm so burnt I just pass out from morning to early evening then just stay up till I leave for work because I have to get something done on those days or I just feel like shit about it.

    Thought about doing this during college - most of the things I read said that it takes your body a while to adapt to the changes (2-4 weeks I think) and that you'll basically be a zombie for the first week. It'd be cool to see a full transition video over the course of a month or two, but still a great vid!

    Late, but I felt this so hard. I have depression and I was taking care of my mom for 15 years. After moving states, I now have this thing for about 2 weeks, probably more than three times out of the year, I'm sleeping all day and up all night. The only way to get back to normal unless my body just gives out and sleeps at night, is staying up all day and crashing at 8 or 9. (FYI sleeping pills don't help me! One doctor had me on something prescribed and it didn't do much.) Every time that happens, I know why they use sleep deprivation as a torture device. I can't imagine staying awake 50 hours. You killed it, you're amazing and hilarious! Thanks for highlighting how hard this is, because sooo many people don't get it. (Only a few friends know I suffer like this, because you let too much out, you get unsolicited advice. Augh!)

    I hope you feel better soon! I had Covid , it was a mild case for me but even that was just a total suck fest. I highly recommend taking very deep breaths every half hour or so, just take 5 minutes to breathe really deeply in and really fill your lungs, even hold your breath for a little while each time. even if you arent having major respiratory symptoms your lungs are affected and lower oxygen levels make you feel like dookie. expanding your lung and getting some good oxygen intake really helps.

    Your mama has felt like this before! And, it doesn’t get easier. But it’s excellent training. Because of my son and my daughter, I’m perfectly capable of sleeping standing up with a baby on my hip. I can still determine degrees of emergency by the tone and quality of the cry in my sleep. The real problem with your missing sleep here is that it was an experiment. Soldiers learn to handle sleep deprivation, and so do mothers. In both cases, the good ones develop a working familiarity with the torture, enough to preserve and remain capable of sustaining life for others. But no one is at their best when they’re basically sleeping on their feet.

    As a nightshifter who struggles with my cortisol levels being extremely out of control, this was interesting to watch. You can live a long time without proper sleep, for me it was 6+ months averaging about 4-6 hours. But the sleep got less and less as my body stayed in fight or flight mode, and soon enough it was 2-4 hours of sleep at a time, never fully getting my REM sleep. And when you sleep like that? You break. My breaking point was that I just stopped sleeping. Every time I laid down my heart would to begin to race like I was sprinting. I am currently in recovery, trying to retrain my brain and body to sleep again, it’s hard, some nights I feel crazy, other nights I sleep like a log. But I am a hell of a lot happier now than I was even 2 weeks ago, though I’m still struggling with a sort of “sleepless brain” I am very forgetful and struggle to make my brain keep up. I’m dreading having to go back to my night line, but I think now I have better tools and routine to handle it, and am able to prioritize my sleep over anything else in my life. Sleep is the most important thing in our lives, sleep is health, and I will yell that from the mountain tops now. quite the challenge, Will.
